  • Today at Ugly Truck, we've got our air conditioning system installed, and we're just a few wires away from ICE COLD AC! We use the OEM HVAC control module so that the PCM controls the system and can adjust the engine idle when the compressor kicks on. And on that note, the 85 C10 5.3 LS swap is complete!

      @lubblegarage Před 2 lety

      @@UglyTruckExperience It seems that the Vintage Air and others suggest you use their compressor (Sanden 508). It seems the stock GM style compressor is a variable displacement compressor and has been known not to play nice with Vintage Air Systems. Probably going with a Sanden style low mount aftermarket mount which uses the stock crank pulley. Curious if the Sanden compressor will load down the engine. Seems mixed on LS swaps. Some say no problem , some have stalling issues. Does your workaround kick up the idle? I did not notice much change in the video. Or maybe I just need to chill and cross that road if it needs crossed, LOL

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Před 2 lety

      Yes, doing it this way it controls the idle the same as it would in the original 2005 that it came out of. When you turn the ac on it slowly brings the idle up just a bit anticipating it coming on. You don't even notice when the compressor kicks on. It idles so low with ac off that it would definitely stall if it wasn't controlled by computer.

    Good work! There has to be a way to hook up ac without the Donor truck controller. Ilathe most simple way of controlling ac is with the original if possible. I’ll have to look more into it. If not, I’ll use this method. It works, not too long to hook up, and it could be hidden relatively good and no interference of the feet. I have a overhead consol in my burb so maybe an independent switch of some sort somewhere.

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hello Ed. The LS engine just works better if it is controlling the AC. When the AC is turned on it starts bringing up the idle, getting ready for the compressor to come on and It also cycles the AC using the high side pressure. It is just less noticeable when running and more efficient especially with electric fans. We appreciate you watching. Jerry and Emily

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Před 7 měsíci

      If you're using an aftermarket ECM with the aftermarket harness, some of them will control the idle like the OEM PCM. But we've talked to a lot of folks with a lot of experience with LS swaps, and using this module is the only way we've found to do it with the OEM computer. All of our swaps are stock and reuse as many original parts as possible to keep the overall cost down and to make replacement parts easier to find, so we've never used an aftermarket system on our swaps. We're always curious to hear of another way, so be sure to let us know what you figure out. Thanks for watching, and Happy Holidays! --Emily and Jerry

    • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Před 8 měsíci

      Hello Terry. This system uses all of the original wiring in the donor harness to run the AC system. The LS uses that high side pressure sensor to cycle the AC system like normal and the trucks original low side switch on the receiver dryer is used also. That low side switch is wired to the AC processor and just lets it know that it is not low on refrigerant, allowing the processor to go ahead and tell the ECM to run the AC. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily

      On that Cadillac you would need to find the Dark Blue wire that comes from the Electronic climate control power module. It tees off and goes to the AC cutout relay and also goes to the cars original ecm. They end up being Lt. Green at both of those. That wire would be used to turn 2004 module on to communicate with your new ecm. That's a pretty cool swap. Hope this helps. Thanks

      The LS 3 wire plug is actually going to what is referred to as a transducer. It receives 5 volts reference, a ground and then a signal determining the actual pressure. You will have to have that 3 wire transducer. The only ones that I have seen thread onto a schrader valve on the high pressure line. If you don't have one you may have add one to the line. That switch that was originally on you 84 is just a on and off switch. On some AC high side fittings, they are threaded on so you can remove the service fittings. I have used that and then just read my high side with a scan tool. I hope this helps. Jerry

      Hello Shaun. The Dark Green wire would be the wire that powers the Compressor. If the original wiring is all still there, that wire will have power with the AC switch on. It passes through the switch mounted on the accumulator, so it won't have power without the system being full of refrigerant. You can jumper that switch to confirm power at Dark Green with key on and AC on . Or just check the light green wire at the accumulator switch for power. That switch closes and provides power to the Dark Green. Hope that helps. Jerry

    As always, great video! Might I suggest a video that covers everything someone might need to know to hook up an LS compressor to a squarebody system? I've been googling things such as which condenser to use, which hoses to use, if the hoses need customized, which switches to use (and if they need swapped out), etc. I'm finding bits and pieces but nothing that covers from beginning to end. Maybe you do have this video already and I've just failed to unbury it?

      I use the original 84 low pressure switch on those. I splice the wires from the LS harness to the two that are on the original plug. It is just a open and closed switch that tells the AC module it is ok to fire up the AC so it doesn't matter what wires at that plug you connect to, as long as you are using the LS wiring to control the AC through the high pressure switch. Thanks. Jerry

      Hello Nick. The wiring harness that I use is the stock harness that plugs into the original high side sensor. So the wiring for the A/C is all there and still uses that high side signal for cycling the system. The only difference in the system is how I get the computer to turn it on. Hope that answers your question. Thanks Jerry

      On that truck the suction/discharge hose that I used had the valve installed in the discharge side of the line for me. When I don't use a similar hose or am having to make my own I just have to get that high side valve in there somewhere. Depending on what compressor you are using, some of them have a plug in the back that is optional for the high side sensor. It's that time of year. Everybody wants their AC running. Thanks NIck. • @UglyTruckExperience
      @UglyTruckExperience  Před 9 měsíci

      Hello Terry. Yes, that switch from the donor is a module that talks in computer language to the ECM through a data connection. By turning it on, it tells the ECM to run the AC like it should. This is mounted under the dash and the original switch on this truck just turns it on. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily

    • @UglyTruckExperience

      On this 85 I used a Dirty Dingo compressor adapter and use a R4 compressor. The original 85 hvac system is used to turn on the 2005 control module that ends up sending a data signal to the pcm to turn on the ac. The 2005 control module is hidden under dash so the 85 controls appear to be doing all the work. Thanks
