RIVETING CONTENT - Building Upper Radiator Support for LS Swap - UTX
Today at Ugly Truck, we're building an upper radiator mount for this squarebody LS swap. You know we love using parts from the donor, and this is no exception! The top of the donor core support already has holes to mount the LS radiator and cooling fans, and with a couple of small brackets, it bolts into the squarebody core support perfectly. You don't even need a welder!

Today at Ugly Truck, we’re talking LS swaps and body control modules, and wiring the tow haul mode on our 1970 Chevy C10 with a 5.3 and 4L60E. We’ve had a ton of questions about the BCM when it comes to swaps: Do you need it? When do you need it? How does it work? Today, we’ll answer those questions and a few more along the way. PATINA POLISH UPDATE - Easy Wipe On CLEAR COAT + NO GREASY FINISH! - UTX

Today at Ugly Truck, Emily is back on the 1965 Chevy C10. It's been 2 years since we top coated this patina with Zep High Traffic Floor Polish, and it's held up great, but it's time for another coat. After a good scrub, we can simply wipe on another coat and give it some more shine, and a few more years of protection from the elements. The finish dries quickly with no greasy, oily film like oth...
SHAFTED - 4L60E 4WD to 2WD Conversion - UTX

Today at Ugly Truck, we’re showing how easy it is to change a 2wd 4L60E to a 4wd, and vice versa. Tearing down a transmission seems complicated, but when it comes to a 2wd or 4x4 conversion, it's pretty simple! So if you end up with the wrong 4L60E for your swap, here's your solution! There are a ton of 2wd and 4wd output shafts and housings on Ebay pretty cheap so finding parts shouldn't be an...

Today at Ugly Truck, we're taking a break from LS swaps, and tackling the cab mounts on this 1986 Chevy C10. We've soaked everything down with WD-40, but one of the bolts is stuck and the captive nut inside the cab is slipping. Fortunately, this is the perfect job for our new AN600 endoscope (borescope) from ANYKIT. Being able to see inside makes it possible to get this bolt loose without using...

love this video it makes me want to change my setup on the ole c 10 great work as always

Hi my name is wayne and i Have 71 chevy c10 i dont Know what to do go swap 5.3 engine or efi sniper 2 I dont know what want you recommend me let me know I appreciate it thank You
Hello Wayne. We have done both to Emily's 1970 C10. Our reasoning for doing the LS swap on it was not being happy with the performance of the EFI. It did work much better than the worn out carb that was on it though. After spending what we did on the EFI I had just wished we spent that money on the LS. Let us know what you end up doing. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
You mentioned that the radiator needs to sit low to avoid hitting the hood… will the lower portion that you cut out of the ‘05 radiator support work with this upper radiator modification? Thanks again for another informative and entertaining video! Rob
Hey Rob. Yes it does. That is what I used on this truck in fact. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily

Awesome video I’m going to use that but I’ve got a question will that radiator work for a 6.0 or do I need to get a aluminum radiator and electric fan will it cool it just fine with the stock radiator thanks in advance
Hey Donald. This radiator takes care of the 6.0 no problem. I have installed both the all aluminum and this plastic/aluminum and have not noticed a difference. If the truck is from a warmer climate, I run a 170 degree thermostat in them and they run right around 180 degrees. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily

@UglyTruckExperience I certainly will! Love your truck BTW!
My truck is a 1/2 ton diesel (1980 c10) so no HEI wire, is there a comparable wire you know of I could use to be hot in start/ run?
There should be possibly two green wires coming out of the connector at the firewall that will be power in run, crank. It originally would have come out and branched off going to a few different things on the diesel. Like the glow plugs and the switch on the pump that shut the fuel supply down. I am looking at a 84 wiring diagram, but I believe it is the same. Hope that helps. Jerry
vice grip recomends a 2or 3 to one mix of boiled linseed oil with mineral spirits. not too greasy, lasts for 3-6 months
I have seen a lot of people use that recipe, but I didn't want it to be greasy and wanted it to last longer. This Zep floor polish has been great! Here's a link to the 2 year update if you're interested. czcams.com/video/CaAIs2yLxt0/video.html We appreciate you tuning in! --Emily
Does this apply to dbc set up?
Hey Francis. Drive by cable uses a cable box to hold the throttle plates open. The wiring does work in a very similar way though. I have always wanted to wire one up but have never had the chance. Jerry
Yes
Hey... I have to press on my gas for 5 to 10 seconds for my engine to stay crank at startup...what could that possibly be?
Hey Terry. Look at your fuel pressure first. Jerry
I am doing a swap on a 71 Caprice and my radiator is much narrower than the one out of my 04 Silverado donor. I was wondering if there was another GM radiator narrower that I could run so I can still use the factory cooling system with all the factory components, instead of re inventing the wheel trying to figure out how to incorporate my stock '71 cooling system with my 5.3 swap, id rather keep it as original to the 2004 tahoe set up as possible.... Thank you in advance for any input, as always I appreciate your channel more than you know it's like having a LS guru to run and get all your questions answered.... Much appreciated
Hey Matthew. There is a radiator that is a little over 28 inches for a core width that might work for you. Spectra Premium CU2334. They did not have a electric fan setup for these radiators, they we're all mechanical. We used it in Emily's 70 because of it's size. It might be your best option. Hope that helps and if you end up using it be sure to let us know. Jerry and Emily
I'm 53 and just pulled my first ls from a 08 4x4 1500. My first thought was to put it and 4l60e in a little black 2 door bmw that the transmission is out in but I may put it in my 70 chevelle haven't decided. Reason I'm commenting is I pulled cab off and it was really easy.
Thanks Wes. You are correct. Having that cab off makes everything so much easier on any of these. Thanks for watching. Jerry
Hey bud, I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I’m doing a 79 pick up Chevy with the LS swap with dual tanks. What video is the best set up of yours? To check out.
Hello Michael. We have a few of them, but I would check this one out first. czcams.com/video/NtfJcXJBirg/video.html
When going from dished piston to flat top your reason to increase compression. * more power * lq4-lq9 then you said we are staying 317 so no changes in tune. Unless u are using a lq9 ecm. You'll need a tune anyway. . So why not do it right put a set of 243-799 be done.
Hello NPG. The LQ9 with 317 heads is a stock tune. We send the computer out to the guy who does our computers. He will download a stock tune for a LQ9 and a 4L80 transmission and it will run perfectly without a custom tune. If we change the engine from a stock configuration, like adding more compression with different heads, a custom tune would be needed. I also need this truck to run on 87 octane regular fuel. Jerry
As always great video very informative you guys are the best... I don't know what I would do without you guys walking me through my swap so thank you for that..... MY QUESTION IS: I am working on a 1971 Caprice which does not have HEI ignition.... instead had a coil ignition, I'm curious as to what steps need to be done on pre-HEI ignitions? As far as my factory wires coming from my firewall I have two wires (+/-) for my coil in place of the one wire for HEI 🤷
Hello Mathew. That power wire that came from your junction block that lead to the positive side of the coil is probably a resistor wire and needs to be changed to a 14 gauge regular wire. That would be your new hot in run start and crank wire. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching. Jerry and Emily
Definitely one of my faves!
Thanks William. We appreciate it. Jerry and Emily

That black tab is a factory attachment point. Used to install the engine. There is a slotted endlink on a short chain that it interlocks into. I have a couple of the chains, however its almost easier to use accessory bracket bolts in the heads for balance reasons.

can you give us the brief problem with the 4.8 and mileage the 4.8 lasted until ?
Hey Shawn. We bought the 4.8 with around 220,000 miles on it and threw it in hoping it was a good motor. We paid 600.00 for it and the transmission and had a really tight budget. Emily put about 10 thousand miles on it and we noticed we we're starting to have to add coolant. We changed it's oil one day and the pan was filled with sludge. That is what led to this video. I hope you are not having the same issues. Thank you for watching. We really appreciate it. Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperience got a 2000 4.8 w/man trans just wondering how long they last guessing 300 if oil change reg
We have one out here with 450,000 miles on it that runs and sounds new. It was maintained like crazy by the people who owned it. Motor has never been touched from the records we have. We love the 4.8. It is a great motor. Jerry
Is that top plate from a 454 truck
Hey Khary. What part are you asking about specifically? I haven't seen this in a while. Thanks. Jerry
@@UglyTruckExperience black top plate that secured radiator to fan
That is the top piece that I cut out of the donor radiator support. I rivet a bracket onto it that I custom make and then the radiator and fan bolt together like they would in the 2004 donor truck. It ends up looking pretty nice I think. Jerry
What type of signal is the blue a12 wire sending to the module? Is it ground, 12v or 5v? I’m trying to use the HVAC module on a Vintage Air system with a trinary switch that also runs the fans. Trying to figure witch side of the switch to use. Thanks for all of your great Video!!
Hey Randy. That blue wire passes through the low pressure switch and is just a source to ground....Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
Super helpfull video! I have a 85 k20. I would like for the fuel gauge to work correctly so that means I need the sending unit from a 85 not an 87? It will be the same prosses to swap to your ls setup? Are the baffels in the tank necessary? Thanks!
We run the 87 sending units in the 85's and the 5 ohm difference really isn't noticeable. If you keep your fuel tank above a 1/4 tank, not having a baffle is no problem. Our own trucks do not have baffles and it has not been an issue. Thanks for watching. Jerry and Emily
@@UglyTruckExperience I really appreciate your response! Do you happen to know anything about mating a 4l80e 4x4 to a np208c transfer case? I think I have vss figured out, I am just trying to figure out if I will need an adapter. Thank you!
You would have to buy an adapter for that and also the 4l80 is longer which poses a problem. You will end up having to have to deal with different length driveshafts also to position the engine back far enough. Jerry
Hey from Australia! Thanks for the tips 😊
Hi from Missouri! 👋 Thanks for tuning in, David!
I used the factory harness and fuse block in my swap. Put a 02 LM7 from a Silverado into my 94 S10. I had to section about an inch and a half out of the fuse block holder to clear the hood. Also modified the fuse block cover to fit the modified mount. FYI a hot stapler is amazing for modifying or repairing plastic parts.
Awesome! Those hot staplers do look pretty handy! Might have to check those out. Thanks for tuning in, Shady!

Thanks Tito! We don't have a video on the instrument cluster, but several people have asked about it. We'll put it on our to-do list! We appreciate you watching our stuff. --Emily and Jerry
Thanks keep up the great work. And great ideas coming along
Thanks for the video! If I use a 4x4 engine, ecu, fuse box and harness but use a regular 4L60E does the computer need different programming then normal to make the 4x4 stuff work with the 4L60E?
Hello Rod. It doesn't change anything with the computer. The only difference is getting the speed sensor signal from the transfer case is all. Jerry
In your case it should just be a matter of plugging it in on the 4l60e if your going to a 2wd. You shouldn't even have to mess with the wiring.

Ya can't just re use your old DOD cam right? Need a new regular non DOD cam from a third party? Am I missing something here?
If.you have a dod engine that has not had any issues with the lifters yet, you could just have the dod deleted from the computer and it would be fine. If it has developed problems, the most economical thing to do is put a non dod cam and lifters in and block off the oil passages from the vlom. Jerry
