It’s so funny that this movie literally points out the ways Edward was abusive (like when she apologized for bleeding) and they still romanticize it. Like how can you be both self aware and ignorant???

Ok, Edward has MANY abusive moments, but how is that indicative of anything? She apologises because she used to date a vampire and was used to taking every precaution in order not to bleed. It's not like Edward would get mad at her for bleeding, it's just her own caution.
I don't think Edward really came off as abusive because Bella apologized for getting cut. Its not like he was blaming her for it. In fact he was actually upset that she was blaming herself.
When something bad happens, both have a knack to blame themselves, even when its no one's fault.

Bella begging the Volturi to kill her gives me the same energy as girls who get in their boyfriend's faces when said boyfriend gets in a fight, trying to convince him that "this isn't you, stop fighting."

Great way to really sell a love triangle though. Lets face it... no one in their right mind should have thought Bella would choose Jacob. He was clearly just an obstacle thrown into generate obstacles to the Bella/Edward relationship. And I'm not saying that because I'm Team Edward or anything... it's just obvious. But despite how obvious it was that Jacob would be friendzoned in the end, Meyers apparently got a good portion of the fanbase to get sucked in the triangle. That's not easy to do, but she pulled it off probably more effectively than anyone in history.
I _would_ make some type of Naruto joke, but probably no one else would get it except for me.

Jacob is an acceptable kind of weird, he has chill to great vibe moments, and he’s self aware enough of when he’s getting too weird, so he can bow out while he’s still able.
Edward is weird in a way that makes Bella (and the audience) feel like they forgot how socializing works too, isn’t even aware of his anger issues separate from vampire-hunger, and acts like his bullshit is inevitable even though he could have made an effort to keep Bella out of it. (If you don’t want anyone to eaten, why do you ask them to hang around your hungry family?) (If you don’t want someone to obsess over you, why are you sending your force ghost to haunt them?)
It’s bad news to romance either of them, but at least Jacob is an okay one ito continue to be friends with.
@@thejest69 yeah all of jacob's "weirdness" comes from the supernatural stuff, too. this movie is such a relief because it's the first time you see bella interacting normally with another human. i swear i'll never be over how much new moon reads / watches like a story about a girl who very nearly escapes an abusive relationship, only to end up right back in it.

Bella's immunity was retconned. In the first book she was only immune to Edward's ability but she was still afflicted by Jacob's powers. And then New Moon was like "nah she was immune all along." It was a moment and you'll miss it in the first book so I guess even the author forgot lol.
It wasn't a retcon. Bella is immune to powers which directly effect the mind (ie Edward, Aro, Jane). She's a mental shield Jasper and Alices powers aren't mind attacks, so they still work.

The thing is, Stephanie kind of destroyed Jacob in the book/movie after this, I guess because more people wanted the werewolf instead of a vampire. I don't think she expected anyone to want Bella's dad instead.

In all fairness, all of them looked bad in Eclipse, not just Jacob. He looked the WORST... but Bella and Edward looked pretty bad too. I guess that's what happened when you sort of pattern the story after Wuthering Heights.

Brandon Sanderson is the most influential fantasy writer of our generation, maybe just behind George R. R. Martin, and he's a capital P Professional writer. Speaking specifically about the Cosmere, he regularly gives fans what they want to read without compromising the story he's been crafting for decades.
He would never give a character a personality shift just because he didn't want fans to like said character.
I'm not trying to shit on Meyer, just so we're clear, I just don't think "write what you want to read" is actually good advice. Maybe it is to start, but not for a Professional.

Bella's power is a shield that she can also project to others and remove from herself completely. She is immune to any abilities that attack the mind, but if it's a physical power like elemental control or surpressing senses (I forget which vampires had them) it will work on her. She also got it from Charlie, Edward says he only gets snippets of what he's thinking.

I honestly think the books have the potential to be good, if it comes from the angle of all three maturing as people and dealing with their own bs. Bella going from being co-dependent and in deep depression to gaining self-worth and healthy management of said depression (and maybe some therapy). Similar idea with Edward and Jacob, Edward learns how to not be a cold prick and Jacob (this movies version) learns how to value himself enough to not be a rebound/learn anger management for the Wolf stuff. Everything is the same but there’s character growth.
