Tbh I liked Peeta more than everyone else in the books. The movies did try to show Peeta's charismatic and clever side but it was very subtle? Like: him waving at the audience and holding hands with Katniss to gain attention from the audience, and hence sponsors. Him trying to use the love story of him and Katniss to attract sponsors. In catching fire too, there were a lot scenes like that. FFS that pregnancy bomb that he dropped on the Capitol to stop the games lol. He even saved district 13 in Mockingjay 1 with his warning on television. But the books did it all a lot better, of course.

i feel like katniss was implied to be indigenous (or at least mixed) in the books? her sister and mom were said to be pale and blonde, but katniss and her dad had swarthy olive complexions and black hair. it's pretty annoying how all the uprising scenes and scenes of injustice are depicted heavily with actors of color, yet the main cast (and most of the other tributes) are white? it makes sense that the kids from the "favored"/more privileged districts are white, but i feel like it would be more powerful if the other districts had more diversity to reflect america's racial economic inequality and regional divide.

Now feel something when she dies."

Yeah, like you find out she's so good at climbing and moving through trees because she was in charge of sending messages to workers in the orchards back home. And the whistle she uses to communicate with Katniss is the signal she would use to tell people the work day was over and all the Mockingjays would spread it throughout the fields. And singing was like their only source of entertainment while they worked so songs and singing were really important to them. But lol all of that was glossed over in the movie and she was just kind of reduced to a poorly executed tear-jerker moment...

edit: she has grey eyes my mistake 😔
the way they turned “olive skinned, brown eyed, dark haired 16 year old” katniss into jennifer lawrence with brown hair will never fail to grind my gears...it was obvious in the book that the richer people in district 12 had blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin like her mother and peeta :))) katniss constantly describes herself as looking like a “typical Seam resident” as well as Gale.
it’s how they convinced the Capitol they were cousins
plus when they completely wrote out Peeta losing his leg and having a prosthetic after the 2nd book
i think the aging up of Katniss really ruined that whole love triangle, the point in the books seemed to be that she wasn’t interested in both in the first book, in the second she fell in love with the idea of distancing herself from the Capitol and marrying Gale like expected , in the second half of Catching Fire and the third book she realised that Gale could never understand what she had been through and Peeta felt her pain.
to Katniss it wasn’t “which cute boy” but which life she would choose, to try and forget and be a tradwife or move forward and try to heal
i don’t think people give enough credit to Gale turning her down to fight for other people either. despite him being almost weirdly groomed by President Coin into doing uncharacteristic things

Man thank you that's what I kept telling everyone. Race factors into the poverty issue so hard. But also the white washing of all the districts is weird af. Like the movies really made a whole district black and think that wouldn't come off as racist af. It felt like some weird form of segregation where all the black people were put together for no reason especially as that wasn't how it was in the books. Reading the book first and then watching this film was my worst mistake. I left the movies mad.
But for real all the things they skipped sometimes frustrates me because it adds more to how awful this world and their lives really are and explains so many things that lack context because they werent shown well like not including the girl who escaped in the ending of the first book.

    • @NoOne-is2yr
      @NoOne-is2yr Před 4 lety +92

I don't even think it's the fault of the movies. It was more clear in the books because we got to look inside her head, but even in the movies she never seemed particularly interested in Peeta or Gale romantically. And her "happily ever after" featured war flashbacks.
I think the issue is that people watching it only saw "YA", "female protagonist", and "love triangle" and immediately came to the conclusion that it was frilly wish fulfilment garbage. Because anything teen girls like is obviously trash.

Your comments make me think of how when this movie came out, there was a controversy over how Jennifer Lawrence was cast instead of a POC because the description of Katniss in the book leads the reader to believe that she is of mixed heritage. The book even goes into the class distinctions between the citizens in District 12 and how their features differentiate from each other. It's why Katniss's mom has fair skin and blonde hair because she was from the "upper class" while Katniss's father was from the "lower class".

    @sarahtaylor4264 Před 4 lety +3401

Few other things I thought of:
    1. Peeta and Gale are way more interesting in the books. I actually liked how the author approached the relationships. Gale had a promising start as the romantic lead, but I got the feeling they ended up wanting different things out of life as time went on, he couldn't deal with her post-war PTSD and depression, and he had major resentment issues over Peeta. It got very toxic very fast. They way downplayed Peeta.
    2. Peeta and Katniss had more chemistry in the book. He was generally more charismatic and less of an airhead. I felt genuine friendship, or at least the start of it, develop between them over the first book. I can't say whether or not she truly fell in love with him by the series' end, but there is no question of his devotion to her. I get why they ended up together and if that brings her some happiness I can't complain.
    3. Katniss mother has a whole backstory. The short version is that she has severe depression and is almost always emotionally checked out. This is a major criticism Katniss has, as it forced her to be the adult/parent running the household at an early age. It is also a contributing factor to her own lack of reactivity to anything and heavily stunted emotions.
    4. The other kids in the games weren't so cartoonishly evil. They weren't exactly good people you were rooting for, but a lot of their behavior was purely practical. They were survivalists first.
    5. The choice to let them both win was a split-second decision on the part of the host, likely to please the capitol's upper class citizens and the districts. President Snow confirms that he disapproved and the movie reasonably hinted that he ordered the host to be killed.
    6. The book description of Katniss is ethnically ambiguous, so making her mixed or having a minority actress could have been a neat way to add layers of subtext in the movie that weren't in the book. I remember people throwing a fit over whether or not she was white before the film came out though. People were also concerned about how they would portray a minority if they went it that direction. I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood saw all that and decided it was safer to go with the white actress anyway.

@Bille Nye The Russian Spy I'll admit that I was a little surprised when Rue was black. I tend to skim over physical descriptions and just assign them myself based on who I know in real life (I'm a speed reader/skimmer), so I pictured them both as looking like my little sister at that age because that's the whole parallel between the two characters and I'm the same age gap as Katniss and Prim/Rue, so i couldnt tell you how they were described in the books. But I didn't understand why it was such a big deal that Rue wasn't white or whatever. I thought it added a little bit of layers to the movie, where they weren't just segregated by class, but also race. I just wish they had done a bit more with it if they were going to call attention to the segregation in the film

Amen. I only read the first two books, but Peeta felt so much less like a McGuffin and more like an actually valuable asset. He was valuable because he was charismatic and likable, which the rebels could use to convince people, but in the movies they portray a blonde simp pretty boy who they decided to save from the capitol because reasons. I enjoyed the movies, but they could have done better.

The movies also left out that Peeta became an amputee because of the leg wound. It was a big plot point in the books, Katniss was so guilty about it and it was one of the reasons she was so insistent that Peeta win the games in the second book, plus it’s repeatedly brought up that the artificial leg made him walk loudly so it made stealth harder.

How we as an audience focused so much on "romance" and arguing about who was "better for her" that we willingly turned a blind eye to the actual point. 👏🏻

Also, if they both died together, it might cause a domino effect and set an example for other district tributes to die together without an actual winner, causing more dissatisfaction in the capital gamblers.

11:09 this is actually a nice scene between Peeta and Katniss that the movie didn't execute well. In the books Katniss father had died and her mother got depression. Due to her Mom's depression she wasn't working meaning that there was no money for any food. In attempt to keep her family from dying from starvation Katniss goes to the bakery Peeta works at in hopes in finding food for her family. Peeta's mom finds Katniss digging in the trash and shoos her away. Katniss loses all hope and sits in the rain wondering how she is going to get food for her sister and mom. Peeta saw the commotion going on with his Mom and Katniss and goes ahead and burns bread on purpose so he has an excuse to take out the bread to give it to Katniss. Peeta mom sees that he burnt the bread and gives Peeta a black eye because anyways the Mellark family worked at the bakery they were tight on money and needed to sell all their food. So when Peeta's mom looks aways Peeta takes the bread and throws it to Katniss real quick. This gesture saved Katniss and her family and this moment Katniss had with Peeta was very meaningful to her.
Also at 21:30 Idk why the movie made Peeta say that! In the books he never said he watched Katniss every day. In the books Katniss asks Peeta when he decided he liked her and Peeta said when they were in elementary and he heard her sing and how the birds stopped to listen and that’s when he knew he was goner. Then Katniss ask, “so you never noticed any other girls?” And Peeta replies with, “I did but they never made an lasting impression like you.” Honesty the books are so much better and the movie butchered Peeta’s character

I’m the books Katniss, Gale, Haymitch, and many others in the seam were described with olive skin and grey eyes so it could make sense if they came from Native American descent. And many people from the merchant section. Of the district had Blue eyes and blond hair so in the book there was some sort of line between the rich (but still poor) and the very poor
Also, the flashback scene is from when Katniss and her family almost died from starvation and she was trying to sell baby cloths for money for food. She was so tired she fell to her knees infront of the bakery where peeta saw her. So he burned the bread a little so he’d have to take it out. There he threw it to Katniss and she took and it saved her from dying. And then the next day it turns out he was beat for doing that by his mother.
This was my first video I’ve seen from you and it’s super great so far!

I'd love a TV series where they have the first season be dedicated to the backstory of Katniss's relationship with her family (including before and after her father's death) and others. This would explain so much for later parts of the series.

'' i'm here to hit it, and quit it''
Honestly, this right there is why people HATE katniss and say all she ever did was getting played like a pawn and just go with the flow...
BUT HERE I AM, loving her for it?!?! For once we have a 16yo protagonist who did not ask for any of it, and actually only wanted to live her life and later on wanted her sister and peeta safe and didn't give 2 fucks about the revolution.
THAT'S precisely the reason i love.

"I wish Katniss had been played by a Native American actress." 💯 I always pictured her as such and it would be awesome for us to get some good representation.

Is no one gonna talk about how Katniss is supposed to have olive skin and black hair?

In classic literature olive skin tone was used to describe Italians. So they had Katniss look a bit tan

@@kairossnt olive doesn't necessarily mean dark. It's a skin tone that comes in ranges and is especially common in the Mediterranean. You can be pale and have an olive toned complexion, your undertones are just yellowy/greenish. Same goes for black hair/dark eyes.
