Interesting lesson. Focusing on the chord tones instead of getting fancy bending strings all through the solo is a revelation. When I bend strings around a chord scale, I'm pretty darn sure I lose track of where I am going forward until the next chord change. It might sound great when you're doing it but experience has taught me time after time that it's a fishing expedition to get your bearings back into a familiar scale once a chord change happens. I never knew why until this.

Nice video, and I'll make an Al Gore Rhythm Comment. Really glad I discovered Stich, he'll be a reference for me in the future. For now I'm learning the basics of music, both the piano and ukulele. I can't play the guitar since I have a FURS Syndrome, and my left shoulder isn't much better. I'm learning Burgmüller on the piano, and have been "stuck" on three of the first four. No One is an exercise in pentatonics, No 2 is a minor chord song, and No 4 is a study in thirds. I've been transposing them into every key, and my piano teacher is happy. I also transposed the Prélude in C Major into other keys. That's my practice routine for now. Fingering is tricky, and learning minor scales isn't as easy as a Major. But it's easier now that it was several weeks ago. My teacher is happy I'm trying them on the ukulele also. Blues? That'll come. Merci for this video.

Holy hell that's brilliant! I'm sure a similar idea to this comes naturally to all of the great soloists but almost 10 years in I hear this and first try I'm already more musical.

I am Delighted every time I hear Jerry soloing over chords and your demonstrations give me the same feelings . Seeing the roadmap of chords and scales opens the door! I can see the yellow brick road in living color.

This is one of the few videos I think where I've actually got to hear you kinda just play while also teaching something and it's great (with the eyes closed too :D). That SG has a nice quack going with the tone. My favorite example of a song with a story, and probably just my favorite recording, is The Music Never Stopped from Dicks Picks 18 by the Grateful Dead -- all of these themes are explored in Jerry's soloing on that one.
