    The part about Serve & Return (learning through language interaction embedded in social interaction embedded in caregiving interaction ) is great for parents, but @2:10 "hearing the same words over and over helps them understand " undermines your video with references to language learning as repetition (the old idea of language as mechanical stimulus-response associations). Wikipedia (wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_interactionist_theory) contrasts these two ideas as opposites: "Under the social interactionist approach, a child's language development occurs within the child's construction of a social world, also known as the "social-cognitive model". (Behaviorism, by contrast, emphasizes the role of stimulus-response conditioning in language acquisition.)" Recent studies using parent-infant eye trackers and "Baby Labs" suggest that the quality and diversity of social interaction is more important than simple quantity of (often blind) repetition. That you show parents how to make language interaction a natural part of caregiving tasks is what makes your videos so good. Keep making these great videos to help parents.

    Avoiding the "be careful" is great advice. I don't necessarily agree with the second point on giving 100% support for the child when stopping an activity they like, we make "soft cottonwool" humans that way. After trying supportive ways I feel like something more strict can also help them realise people won't always support them and they need to understand compromises.

    My baby is throwing his milestone chart out the window! He was able to start lifting his head at only a week old! By 2 months he was able to control his head when sat up. Unfortunately this means he skipped the stage when he pushes up on his arms and went straight to the swimming phase and is determined to keep his arms raised by his sides. Now during tummy time we put his body on a pillow so he has to put his arms down (he usually just face plants) or he is laid tummy down on our angled legs to push himself up (again, he just lets his face squish between our knees). He'll figure it out at some point, he's already rolling from his back to his side (which makes safe sleeping a nightmare 😂)

    Those tips are a really important reminder for all parents to whom talking to an infant doesn't come naturally. What's missing from the list, thought, is singing to your little ones. Melodies are like a magic key to vocabilary memory. Furthermore, performing finger theater (I use that term for lack of a better translation. In German we say Fingerspiele) is always a big hit with my kids. It combines everything that keeps them engaged: eye contact, language, ritualized action, touch. Such a great activity

    Hi Emma I am conflicted with all the information out there about a toddlers energy needs. I have read numerous times that they need to have minimum 1000 calories a day. This makes me so anxious as my 16 month old hardly eats 500 calories a day. This results me in force feeding her. So many people comment saying that she appears to have lost weight. Honestly its easier to say don't make these mistakes, but what is the solution when they just want to survive on water and air days on end?

    I've tried so many things to get my child to eat, short of starving her. None of them work. She likes to help me prep and cook (we cook a lot, with a good variety too). She knows the names of the ingredients, we also play food-based or restaurant games. She only plays with her food but won't eat. We tried different color bowls, plates, utensils, variety, 1 or 2, 2-3 pcs on the plate, hide n seek, nothing. She only eats a handful of things. She doesn't even like candy, chips, or juice (we tried giving her some just to get her to try anything) let alone fruits, veg, meat. She only eats one brand of milk, choco milk, yogurt, cereal, plain pancakes and waffles, plain straight cut fries, creamy Skippy, and a couple types of cracker. She inspects everything that goes into her mouth visually and thru smell. We tried giving her Pediasure, Ascenda, she would gag. She won't even touch gummy vitamins. Doc says she'll get over it as she gets older. She's tiny, but full of energy and loves different activities like reading, playing and tumbling. But I'm getting really stressed over it.

    Hello @EmmaHubbard❣️ I started watching your videos during my pregnancy and now I don't miss an upload! My little boo is 6 months now and thriving! Thank God, I'm grateful to have come across your videos ❤. Question with the Serve and Return: What if you sometimes take a little long to "Return" but you 100% always return. For example, there's something urgent in the kitchen you have to take care of or something. How detrimental is it? The serve is being returned but there's sometimes a wait time. I'm especially wondering about the period after NB-3months. Specifically 4-6months.

    • @jayhe9025
      @jayhe9025 Před dnem

      Some studies show infants learn words used within 1 to three seconds of seeing or holding a target toy, but "Serve & Return" is actually a process of serve-return-serve-return-breakdown-repair-serve-return, so break-downs are normal and the repairs are an important part of the learning process. So interruptions in and of themselves shouldn't be detrimental. Whether your infant counts your "return" as a repair of the original pre-kitchen interaction or is just happy to start a new interaction is probably not a big deal for any one interaction.

  • @fralou_sind_kreativ

    Hi Emma, thanks for the helpful tips :) I'm a pre-school teacher and have been working with toddlers for many years. I agree on the third thing you talked about in this video. I'd like to add, that children up to a certain age respond especially to the last thing that is said. So if you say "I don't want you to throw your food", what they hear is "throw your food." So always ending the sentence on what you want them to do does the trick too :) When it comes to Number 1: "Being careful", I disagree with you. Maybe it's a cultural thing but I found the sentence "Be careful" really helpful and working great with the kids. A sentence that really does harm and makes them scared would be something like: "Don't climb too high, otherwise you'll fall and hurt yourself" or "Don't run, you'll trip". Those sentences are like a self-fulfilling prophecy but saying your child to be careful means: "Watch out for yourself too." This way they can find out their own boundaries and see how high they would climb on their own without having you as the constant safety net. I found that children dare way more and are less careful when they trust that the adult is standing right next to them. Thinking the parent will watch over them none stop will give them a false feeling of safety and let's be honest most accidents happen because we don't get to the kids fast enough or look away just for a moment. So making sure they watch out for themselves telling them to be careful is a good thing to do! There is a quote by a German pedagogue who said: "Children develop in the expectations of their caregivers". With expecting them in a positive, caring and loving way to watch out for themselves where they can and trusting they will be safe because they take care you give them room to grow in their autonomy and self-esteem. Of course it always depends on the situation but you as the adult have the knowledge of your child's personality and the situation to judge when there is room for your kid to be without you hovering over them like a helicopter none stop. To number 2 I like to add that anticipation is absolute key! You know as an adult when it's time to go home. You can look far enough into the future. Your kid can't. So when it's time to go, give your child a heads up and fifteen to ten minutes before you have to leave go to them and tell them: "We have to go home soon. You can swing a little more and then we'll go." You let your child play and maybe get everything ready before you go to it again and say: "We have to go now. Let's count to ten and then we're done swinging." You could also establish a certain song you sing or play on your phone when it's time to go home. Giving your child the time to anticipate and not ripping it suddenly out of their play does wonders!!! This by the way is good in any situation like having to go somewhere or needing to clean up :) Thanks for the video! <3
