- This is a really simple activity you can add into your daily interactions with your baby that has been shown to be great for their cognitive development.
It might seem intuitive (and you may find yourself doing it without even knowing it already), but even if it is, hopefully this encourages you to do it even more often throughout the day.
It's known as 'serve and return' and is such a nice, natural way to interact with your little one it's incredible easy to do each and every day.

Is development through Serve & Return affected by sleep training?
Hi Emma, I've tried clicking on the link to the free 0-12 months old developmental milestone chart, but unfortunately it isn't working. 😥
Fantastic video, as always! I followed your recommendations to be intuitive, highly responsive, and simply reading, singing, and talking constantly, and my daughter turned out to be a precocious talker. People literally always have been shocked and awed by her vocabulary, clarity of speech, and intelligence -- "she's like Baby Geniuses!" She knew all the animals and body parts before age one, was counting to ten perfectly around 17-18 months, then eventually counting to 20, followed by learning all her colors, shapes, alphabet, days of the week, etc. then speaking some full sentences before the age of two. It was all fun for her to learn too! I'm sure our new little baby boy will be just as awesome! Thanks again for doing what you do.
It is so lovely seeing them develop and their personality start to shine through.
At the moment my 16-month-old is just having an explosion with words and it's so cool seeing her light up when she realises that she can communicate with us.
@@EmmaHubbard Right?! It's the most amazing thing watching them develop and experience the world around them! I was always one of those "I'm never going to have kids" type of people. Then I had one and realized just how incredible the whole thing is. Soon I found myself saying "I can totally understand those people who are 'addicted to having kids'". Now if only I could convince my husband to have a third! HAH!!!
Same for us! Our son has been doing all the same things for months and he's just turned 2. I 100% believe it has more to do with my talking with him and reading to him all day than him "being smart". He listens well, pays attention and asks many questions so obviously he's interested in learning which helps for sure, but I also think reading and talking to him is really a bigger part of his being so advanced.

I really like this approach. But my toddler seems to need me ALL the time, even if I give hime a lot of attention, he will want for more, which is not always possible 😢
When little ones (below 6 months) are playing by themselves, for example under the play gym, and they’re cooing or “talking” to themselves as they play, do we also have to respond to them then? Or it’s okay to leave them as they play?
It's totally ok to leave them to play. It's not possible to be interactive 100% of the time. And letting them play on the floor is great for their development, in particular fine and gross motor.

Emma, i have been following you for 3 years now and your videos have been of tremendous help. My second child is 3 months and she sucks her thumb most of the time even when the mittens are on. Its quite frustrating as this may lead to a serious habit, what do i do to stop this?
This is developmentally appropriate at their age. Chewing on their hands or fingers is one of an infants first fine motor skills. Do not discourage the sucking/chewing, because it's a great sign of development. A word of warning: Once your baby's mastered the hand-sucking thing, that means they'll soon be skilled enough to hold other things and put those in their mouth, too. You'll need to start being more vigilent monitoring your little one.

Hi. I started outside feed for my baby girl 15 days back. She is now 6.5 month old. Till 6 months she was completely on breast milk. She cries a lot nd shuts her mouth when we feed her with spoon. Then v hv to force her to eat. Can this impact her negatively? What can we do?

Hello ma'am I'm from India now my baby just a 38 days newborn baby and I need to burp him too much just 1 burp dosen't help for relax him ' I need to do more if I dosen't burp him he cried a lot t my question is it cause any problems if hold him straight 😥
My son had issues too. He vomited a lot and it was so difficult burping him. I tried different positions and switching between patting his back and rubbing his back in circles. Now he burps easily and doesn’t vomit anymore

@@AlongNaga-vo6lg If the latch isn’t good it’s possible the baby can get air. I would do it just in case. Also if you’re putting breast milk in a bottle definitely burp
How does this affect times when you can't/don't respond? Like during sleep training or when they are supposed to be sleeping but they choose not to.
They aren't choosing not to sleep. You're choosing to ignore them and leave them alone. They cry because it's an instinct to alert you not to leave them unprotected or alert predators that they might as well come for the dinner bell.
Sleep training is an extinction technique. Extinction techniques are borderline abusive because it is an ommission of care and goes against the instincts inbuilt within mother and child. You feel guilt when they cry as you leave them because you're supposed to recognise "baby cannot be left alone". No child under the age of 2 should sleep alone. Their first one thousand days are the most crucial to their attachment and holistic development. Never sleep train your baby until they are capable of walking and speaking basic sentences, with the only exception being neurodevelopmental disorders. It's the same regardless of neurology though: no sleep training until 2 years and 2 months old, that's around the thousand day mark.
Only ever start to sleep train a 26 month old. Not any sooner. You will set your child up for separation anxiety.
@@audreydoyle5268 let's try not to mom shame while giving information please. Sleep training, is just teaching you little how to sleep through the night and be ok if they wake in the night. HOW you go about doing that could potentially be borderline abusive. (Like teaching your kid to swim by tossing them in the deep end vs. Getting in the shallows with them and and showing them the skills. Both are "teaching them to swim"). How my parents tried to tell me to sleep train would definitely have been abusive. How I decided to help my little be ok at night, was not.

No one who is abusive towards their children would be watching videos like these and asking questions. Abusive people don't try to learn better habits or methods unless someone intervenes and calls them out on it or forces improvement.
this is also giving them the signal that nights are not for play and only to sleep, they learn that when it is dark and my parents are not responding that means I have to go to sleep. children pick up signals from associate with environment . i.e if you do an action at perticular time and in a specific set up they associate those cues together.so not responding to their eye contact or initiation to play at night is giving them a message that nights are for sleep and nothing drastic will happen other than them sleeping well😂😂
provided we are physically present with them and attending to their needs just not engaging in play.
Hi @AmyMcLean it's ok not to be interacting directly with your little one 100% of the time. It's simply not possible to do this all the time. What's important is there are times during the day that you do. For example, when you're changing their nappy, feeding with them and playing with them.
My toddler is so obsessed with my ears . He grab my ears and playing . Do I need to check with my pediatrician or is this any cause of concern . Pl guide me
Grabbing your ears isn't a concern if he happily plays with other things. If the only thing he wants to do is play with your ears and ignores everything else then it might be worth checking in with your paediatrician. As always if you're concerned then do check in with your doctor.
Even my 4 years old grabs my ear when he is sleepy is it normal?
My 7.5 month old loves to put his fingers in my mouth when he's falling asleep. It's so random. He hooks his fingers in and keeps them there. If he's half asleep with his eyes closed and his hand isn't in my mouth, he'll search for my mouth with his hand.
It can be. It just sounds like he finds holding your ears soothing. It might be due to the feel or if he rubs them the rubbing sensation.
