The Truth About Teething: Everything Parents Need to Know!

- At birth babies have 20 teeth hiding within their gums. Over the next 2.5 - 3 years these teeth are going to ‘erupt’ and break through the gums. This process is what we know as 'teething". When we can correctly identify teething signs and teething symptoms we can help relieve some of our little one's discomfort by providing teethers and other teething tips. As parents it is also important to know what are not teething symptoms as this will ensure we seek appropriate medical help when needed.
So in this video I cover when babies start teething, what is likely to be your baby's first tooth, how long teething lasts and what are and are not teething symptoms. I also share lots of teething tips and remedies to help provide teething relief for your baby. And share what teething remedies are no longer recommended and can harm your little one.

CZcams is so creepy. I watched one of your videos when my baby was just born and since then, your videos appear in my recommendation section EXACTLY when she is reaching those certain milestones. Am I alone?
NOPE my baby been teething bad the last couple nights . I been talking to co workers about it and now this video gets recommended 🤨🤨
Same lol
@@felix3033 😂😂😂
Are you saying they can also read our minds...😱🤔
Your phone listens to you and remembers what you type in messages/other apps to provide you with their idea of “the best service possible” and to them that includes the creepy mind stalking
Same got my son is also teething
My baby used to have teething symptoms since he was three months but just got his two teeth at 11 months .. the happiness I feel 😊…
That's what mykid is doing also kkkkkkk. He is 9 month now he has no teeth now... But he started teething at 3months
My baby got her first 2 teeth at 3 months. And she just got 4 more at once at 6 months! ❤️
That’s awesome! What did you do to relieve her pain?
just on time! I give my baby paracetamol at night because she keeps on waking and screaming. It works like magic! She finally can sleep
When I was little (I’m 34 yo), my mom used to put brandy on my gums to relieve pain. Apparently, this was really common decades ago, hahaha 😅. Our parents generation definitely was different that ours.
Good solid advice for parents, Emma. Thanks a lot!
Great video. There's a lot of disparity between advisors around the start of teething symptoms. I'm constantly coming across mums online convinced their baby has been teething for weeks, even months without a tooth erupting. Many say healthcare professionals have confirmed teething! But the research says teething symptoms appear shortly before a tooth erupts.
Thank you Emma. Great help for a 1st timer dad here.
I love your videos the one thing I didn’t like was the typical intro bc I’ve heard it so many times. I love that you saved it for the end!
Thank you so much!!
My fiance's mom told me that my daughter was teething when she was 3 weeks old because she put her hand in her mouth/drooled. 🙄 I even asked my daughters pediatrician at her 2 month appointment just to confirm that she wasn't and when I told her that the doctor said no she just ignored me and the next time we visited her she put a frozen teething toy in my daughter's mouth without asking me first and she started screaming. It's so frustrating to have someone not accept what you're telling them and give your child things without asking first! 😡 Sorry, rant over 🤣
(Thank you for this video, it's helping me identify when my daughter is ACTUALLY teething! 🤣)
What about the so called "all natural" teething gels such as Mommy's Bliss??
My baby is a couple weeks away from 5 months and her first tooth popped out and broke through now the second one is starting to want to push through 😭😭❤️ I’m so glad I found this video 😩
Good luck!!
Very helpful video. My son is turned 8 months old yesterday, not had a tooth yet but trying chewing on everything he sees so I believe should start teething soon. I have been feeling nervous about teething and it’s symptoms but I now feel confident after watching this video and know what to do. Thank you so much Emma 🙏🏼
Teeths came
Pls tel mr
You have a very helpful YT channel. I have a 9 month old little one and your channel has been so helpful so far. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Wow this came in my recommendation just in time. My little guy has been getting teeth at 3 months and never bothered him. He has 8 teeth now since 9 months never bothered him. Now he's 11 months and getting in his canines and first molars and is in so much pain and I am freaking out about it. I am so glad I found this video and about the washcloth trick. Very informative so happy.
My little one is 11 weeks and just started. He seems to be in a lot of pain. It's really tough.
Literally just now experiencing this for the first time! She has all the signs I’ll be curious if her teeth erupt this weekend!
Hope they arrive soon and don't cause your little one too much discomfort!
This was super helpful, once again. Thank you! I didn't know they drooled so much because they started producing saliva but couldn't really swallow it 🤯
My daughter is 8 months old today and still no sign of a tooth! But it's okay, there's no hurry since I breastfeed 😄
😬 Imagine the pain when they start teething….. god
For my 3 month old son going on 4 months is having his teething pains, I nurse him before laying him down to go to bed while having on soothing music of ocean waves and it soothes him as he becomes to feel better.
Great strategy to comfort your little one! Sounds like it is working a well.
Thank you so much your videos are so informative
I'm so grateful. Especially being aussie. So relative and chill.
Thanks Emma.. your videos are really helpful.. can you please make a video on helping a 6 month old to sleep covering both daytime naps and night sleep .. I am worried as my 6 month old only takes 8-9 hours of sleep over a 24 hour period.
Thanks Emma your videos are really helpful. I wish if you can make video about ezcema and its treatment.
Glad you are finding this video helpful. Thanks for the topic suggestion. Both my little ones had eczema and know how challenging and distressing it can be. It would be best to talk to your doctor about suitable options for your little one.
How you know Emma , I needed to know this so badly and here you are ❤️
Glad it came at the right time
My little man loves to chew on hard book covers/corners!
Thanks so for another great video Emma. Always so informative. I always feel so much more at ease after your videos Emma.
Can’t wait for the next video.
They are so informative
You're so welcome!
Love your videos! Thanks for this one! Mine just started
Good luck!!
Thank you! This was very thorough!
My pleasure!
Thanks for this video Emma
Is there one that is better though: wooden or silicone teething toys?
A big thank you for this video ! As it’s important to talk about what works it is really important to say what is no more recommended. Here in France most of my friends recommender us gels and amber necklaces…
Glad it was helpful!
Just on time for me ❤️
So glad! Hope it helps
Me too! My baby girl is teething at 3 month...
Just on time for me..
Very educative thanks doc
My pleasure
Thank you 😊💖💖
How to do right teach walking? Does it is safe rolling walking?
Hi Emma do you have any recommendations for babys first toothbrush?
Great as.always
Hi Emma thanks for this great video, do you have any recommendations for a good teether please? We have a few but bub doesn't seem to like them much!
Thanks heaps :)
Our Sophie teether had been useful in the sense that it has multiple ways to hold it and chew it, so it's a pretty funky toy with or without the teething.
Emma, how do you always know exactly the video I need? My little one was a little fussy yesterday and I checked his gums on a whim and there were TWO actively breaking through with and TWO MORE clearly visible under the gum, all on top. Poor little guy. Thank you for the ideas!
Hope the ideas help! Sounds like he is a pretty chilled bub and teething doesn't cause him too much trouble.
Wonderful tips and great video. I remember the very first bottom and top teeth coming out, my ron was so irritable and didn’t want to drink his milk from bottles.
What helped mine for the back teeth were those first baby silicone spoons. She could chew on those for the back teeth.
Thanks for sharing!
Emma, I LOVE YOU! I have watched every video, bought every item you have recommended and followed your advise to a TEE. I trust you so much and your advise it INVALUABLE! Thank you so much from a fellow Aussie! ❤️❤️❤️
💕
Would you recommend the kind of bowls, spoon and fork appropriate for baby to use when they first learn feeding themselves?
Thank you for all the videos. I’ve watched so many already, a video for every milestone of my baby’s development :) Your videos are full of interesting context and presented in an easy to understand way. Thanks again!
Thank you for your sharing
Thanks for watching!
Hi. Your videos have healed me thus far. We are breastfeeding and ours is just 3 months. How do we feed the baby as she start crying when on breast
You deserve million subscribers. :)
I am a 1st time Mum and watching your videos really help guide me with our baby. She starded having teething symptoms around 4months but her 1st and 2nd buttom teeth came out at 9months. Now, she has 3 buttom teeth but none on the upper part. Is that normal?
This video is indeed very useful and informative..as a first time mom i actually don't know what to do..my baby nearly 5month is on nursing strike..i don't know wether i should start wean my baby or wait 6month..any advice?
I couldn't count how many times someone, looking at some symptoms of my baby, said that he was probably starting to teethe, and I spent the next few weeks looking for a tooth 😂 Thank you for this video!
Love from Germany! My first daughter (now 26months) almost never fussed while getting teeth. Had all teeth by about 16monthd.
My 6month old has really been struggling with it now. We are hoping for the first tooth to come through any day now 🙏🏼
She likes chewing on wooden toys or a plastic spoon
Hoping so too! Wow they came in quickly for your first child.
Can you also give us tips or information about natal teeth? My baby have two front teeth since she was born, same as me.
Oh God, thanks a lot for this video 🙏🏻, it came just on time for me as my little one just started teething 👶
Best of luck!
Thank you so much 🥰💕 .
My baby is 6 months old he is having a teething this video really help me ..
We r having a rubber teether. He is enjoying that.
Glad it was helpful!

My 5 month is just starting to go through this, thank you!

You r such a darling.. Your videos help me a lot.. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🌷🌷
My Babies Are 8 Month The End Of This Month & No Teeth Started Coming Up
Ma'am.. why my baby head is warm but no fever? Is this also a sign of teething? She is 5months old..
My 5 month old has just cut 3 teeth and you wouldn’t even know it. He’s amazing
My baby has been in pain off and on over the past month. He constantly rubs his gum and his teeth are definitely coming in but they haven’t erupted yet 😫
Thank you so much ♥️♥️♥️
You are so welcome
Is Bonjela considered as a teething gel and hence not recommended?
My daughter is 10 months old and last night was so horrible she was in so much pain she was drooling like crazy her cheeks were red like crazy. It broke my heart I wish I could take the pain for her
It is so hard seeing them uncomfortable. Hopefully those teeth break through soon.
On the perfect right time،my baby is teething too.thank you
You’re welcome 😊
Very informative 😊😊 luv from India
So glad!
I've read USA studies that states gum massage soothed teething babies back to sleep 20 mins sooner than teething rings. Our little one tho prefers chewing HARD on anything cloth and of course, our clean fingers
I did frozen wet cloths and our fingers were always the best
My little one loved chewing on my finger but tended to prefer soft foods until the teeth came through.
My baby is in constant teething. It starts and stops constantly before it actually emerges. He gains his teeth when his 6 year old cousin loses hers and she just lost her bottom canine so ours should be gaining at least one bottom canine.
When would be a good time to get my baby a push walker?
right on time :) my 6 month old is definitely showing signs of teething
So glad!
My baby is gona be 15 month old now , he has only 2 lower teeth , his first tooth came just 1 week before his birthday , I'm worried about his teething process
Weird, my baby is currently crying in pain due to teething then YT recommends your video on my homepage.
Hope this video helps makes teething a smoother experience for you both!
My baby is 10 months and didn't get his first tooth until 9 months old I'm still waiting for the rest and I find it funny that you said teething does not cause a fever because my lo got a fever and a lil cold and his doctor told me it was because he was teething so he is going to get sick allot🤷🏽♀️
My baby is teething, he had a little fever and cold. Its normal
I'm relieved to see some comments that there are babies who get their first tooth beyond 7 months.
I'm a first time mom and a bit worried that my 7 month old baby doesn't have his first tooth yet (comparing to some babies around his age). I sometimes think he has teething symptoms like excessive drooling and biting but there are no teeth eruption eventually. I guess i'll just have to wait for his teeth to come.
@Whinxie_dixie reading the comments is also giving me a bit of comfort my LO is 8 months and still no teeth but had all the symptoms of teething
Very helpful information! I was reading thru the comments to see if anyone else using Hylands teething pills and what your take is on them? We have 6 mos old babies that are struggling and have been fie the past 3 mos but no teeth yet ..
What about baby orajel? Is that product not useful to soothe a baby’s gum?
is it normal for them to get diaper rashes? a lot of moms have told me this. also, what about the zarbees gum gel. i was surprised that it said 2+ months on the package
My little one started teething at 3 month. I gave him a soother as it's made of 1piece and filled it up with water and put it in the freezer. This was the only thing which calmed him down immediately.
Thanks for sharing this tip!
I understand that you say that babies do not get fevers while teething, but my daughter is teething at the moment, she has had fevers (37-38.3) . Was told there is nothing wrong with her she is indeed just teething...
Thanks.
No worries at all!
Thank you so much mam...
Most welcome 😊
When baby first initially begins teething, they do get a slight fever. At least my son did. And he hasn’t had one since. Just the usual symptoms now, that you have mentioned.
Yes and they do get diarrhea sometimes as well.
I’ve also heard that teething can cause a weaker immune system, which can cause baby to catch a bug and get sick and thus a fever. Who knows…? 🤷♀️
My 7 months old baby is teething this week I can see the teeth almost out and he experience diarhea and biting on everything..some drooling but that’s it..
My 5 month year old is teething! His little tooth irrupted and you can see the white coming out the gums 😣 He went through a sleep regression for sure and wanted to be held the whole time!
Hello, my baby is almost 5 months old and he also wants to be held at night. Do you have any tips of how to put him to bed at night or alleviate the pain?
Hello i love your videos! In your video about floor seats you have a lot of people asking about the Upseat, which claims to be designed by physical therapists. Could you please respond to these people with your thoughts on this floor seat? I had never considered buying a bumbo or anything but I had considered buying an Upseat because they claim to be designed to promote hip development and proper posture.
Hi @Sasha personally i have not use the Upseat with any of my clients. Generally I do not recommend floor seats l because this sometimes lead to babies being placed in the sitting position before they are ready. From what I have seen of the upseat and read I would say it is better then the other floor seats because it places the baby's hips slightly forward (anterior tilt) which ensures the baby does not adopt a curved back (however if your baby is sitting with a curved back they are not yet ready to sit up in these floor seats). There does appear to be a bit of space around the baby's trunk when sitting in the Upseat which means they can work on correcting their body posture if they fall very slightly off centre. I would always recommend a high chair over a floor seat for mealtimes because your baby can use it for years and sit at the dining table with the family which is important when learning to eat solids. Overall the features of the Upseat do appear better than other floor seats but personally I would use that money to purchase a god high chair and other developmental toys.
My son didn’t start teething and getting teeth in till he was 10 months old. My four month old daughter is heavily teething however.
4 teeth at once at 5 months old 😭
Refrigerated teething rings and panadol (only at night and following the instructions of pharmacist) these are the only things we have been using. Won't use any gels, powders or amber, nothing that has no evidence to back it up.
It’s really helpful thank you but I wanted to know what should we do when baby lose their complete appetite and don’t eat or don’t want feeding bottle or he immediately vomit if u try to feed something because my baby is doing this while teething and he is 8+ months
My baby has been screaming from the same tooth coming in for two weeks now so idk if it really only lasts two days before it cuts and two days after. :(
Can you also make a video about baby bow legs? Please. How can we cure this? Or any tips for this. This will be a great help for us mommies. Thank you.
I really love your vidoes. They are so informative and helpful for us.
Thanks for the suggestion - will aim to make a video on this topic soon. Most children aged 18 months to 2 years have some bow-leggedness and usually goes away without treatment, often by the time a child is 3-4 years old. But I would recommend you take your little on to the doctor so they can give you specific advice and treatment options if required.
Glad your finding the videos helpful
@@EmmaHubbard My baby is 8 months old. But as a first time mom, I am worried about it. Anyway thank you for your response. I really appreciate it. God speed and stay safe always. 🙂
what pacifier do you recommend?
Any other late bloomers? My little love didn’t get her first tooth till 14.5 months old. She’s now 22 months old and has only 5 teeth. I doubt she’ll have all 20 teeth by 3yo! Any teething tips for the late bloomers/ toddlers?
could be just delayed or could be sign of congenital disease. hope you can have your baby check by the dentist :)
Love from Srilanka ❤️

What about 2 month old immunisation relief
My baby had oral thrush, she was growing 4 upper teeth at the same time, oh what a terrible time for us this week 😔
With my older children they had no symptoms whatsoever, no teeth today, tomorrow teeth
That does sound like a difficult time.
my son is 3 1/2 months and already showing these symptoms. And I can see his little teeth already peeking🤗
The first tooth is always very exciting!
My baby girl started teething around 3 months. She’s almost 5 months now.
Hoping they are not causing her too much discomfort!
Thank you for sharing such important information
I have a 10months old baby boy who is not yet teething. Been seeing the signs but teeth don't come out
Should i get worried or perhaps be little bit patient?
Watching from South Africa
Same! Did they come in yet?
Hi Emma… my baby turned one on 6th April 2024. His teeth didn’t come out yet. Should I be concerned and get checked with his paediatrician?
He is chewing everything and drooling more..
I think my 3 month old is definitely having gum pain. Shes been extremely fussy lately and bites on her hand and pacifier aggressively. No teeth coming through yet but I can see where there going to. I don't remember my 10 and 12 year old teething this young 🤔
Wow that is on the younger side. Hopefully those teeth come through soon and she returns to her happy self.
Same with my daughter, she's turning 3 months at the end of this week and she's starting to drool a lot and wanting to chew on everythinnng
@@ratha8799 My daughter will be 7 months Saturday and she has 2 teeth
