Research shows that there is one thing you can easily add to your family's daily habits that can very quickly improve multiple aspects of your baby's sleep.
2 separate studies show that doing this helps babies fall asleep faster, fall asleep earlier (earlier bed times), wake less often during the night, and have increased sleep duration.
While I can't say this will work for every family (we know there are no certainties with these things), it's so easy to do, I think it's definitely worth trying with your baby.
    I hope it helps!

We naturally fell into a sleep routine pretty soon after my son was born and slowly added things as needs changed. now at 7 mo. We eat solids 1 hr and a bottle 30 minutes before bed. Change diaper, change into pjs, a quick massage, brush teeth, sleep sack, lights out and a fan on and he knows it’s time for bed as soon as sleep sack is on. He didn’t sleep well until he moved into a crib. Now he sleeps 9-10 hrs a night and 2-3 more hrs cuddling with his dad after a feed

It sounds so simple but it’s just not (for us). My baby won’t sleep in his crib in the day, just my arms, carrier or pram. And at night he sleeps 10-1:30 and then wakes for feeding and maybe only sleeps another few hours. And is very hard to transfer to cot. Just wakes up every time his body touches the mattress. So hard.

Just remove the hot water bottle and let the mattress cool for a minute and he doesn’t wake up when we put him down now. He would only sleep on us before and wake when we lay him down xxx

We are expecting our first this July. I am probably overthinking this, but I am seeking insight on a baby mobile for the crib --as trivial as it might be. Should a mobile have subtle & relaxing colors or brilliant & stimulating ones? Aren't colorful & high contrast objects around the crib counterintuitive to a strategy that establishes it as a place for sleep?
I am of the mindset that a baby mobile is a way to ease them to sleep without leaving them to stare at plain empty ceiling. Given that parents have to micromanage a newborn's sleep/wake cycles, I don't expect the baby to spend much time wide awake in the crib before or after taking them out for feeding & tummy time.
I am hoping you @EmmaHubbard or another more experienced parent here can shed some light on this. Thank you!

We have been trying to establish a pre-sleep routine but my son (5 months old now) tends to fall asleep in the middle of the feeding which makes my whole routine difficult to execute… and now he wakes up every 1.5-2hours during midnight… any advice from fellow moms here?
Currently what I tried to do:
    1. Diaper change
    2. Feeding (falls asleep in the middle of the feed, then I’d try to continue by dream feeding so he finishes his bottle)
    3. Burp my baby
    4. Putting him into a sleeping sack
    5. Rock him to sleep (or by this time usually he’s quite fast asleep already so I don’t really need to rock him a lot)

Hi Emma, I'm a first time mom and my child is now a month old. We feed her every 2.5-3 hours during the day and give her a full feed around 10pm. Sometimes I give her a bit more at 11pm (she is usually asleep at this time) and put her down for the night in the bassinett. She will usually start to squirm and wake up by 2:30-3am and I give her a full feed and hold her for 20-30mins before putting her down again. However, over the last 3 days she will wake up in an 1-1.5 hours during this second half of the night. She used to sleep atleast another 3.5-4hrs during this second half before and I'm not sure what changed. I usually change her diaper and burp her just to be safe but still no luck. I would love if you have any tips to get her to sleep longer. Thanks!

Lol my 9 month old had reflux until I realized he had MSPI. Getting him to sleep on his back was a nightmare and didn't get better until he could roll onto his belly. He also required being held upright after nursing because of reflux and given I was on leave that was left to me. Now everyone but me can get my son to sleep on his own without feeding but if I try he will not calm down until I nurse him. As he's getting more mobile things are getting better though and does not need to be as attached to me at all times as he did when he was younger.

In a predicament! My son is 3.5 months old. He usually goes to bed around 10/1030 (last bottle bedtime feeding around 9 or 9:30 prior to this it’s usually between 5 & 6pm). He’s been more consistent lately falling asleep around 8/8:30pm. Do i just let him sleep? Or still wake him up around his usual feeding time? I tried just putting him to bed early and feeding his normal feeding time and he woke up every other hour for over a week (given we probably coincided with a growth spurt/sleep regression). He’s just now getting back to his usual pattern and wakes up around 3:30am or 5/530am depending on the day he’s had. Any advice would be appreciated!

Ideally we need for him to sleep long enough it until he gets to her house for a feed otherwise I’ll be late for work 😅 also we are trying not to make him so dependent on a paci at night. Going in at 2am to out his paci in just for him to sleep another hour to cry for food. It’s just a lot.

Hi Jenny, you’re right! During the witching hour with a newborn they are hard to settle to sleep. It can be helpful to know that newborns tend to have late bedtimes at this age and instead of struggling for hours to get them to bed during the witching hour it can be helpful to do other soothing activities. This is something I cover in a lot more detail in sleep course if you would like more help on how to negotiate this stage,as well as, improve sleep.

I am afraid if that association of reading and feeling sleepy would carry on later in life. It could be problematic in school life. Any idea if this could really happen? Or can they grow out of the habit?

    • @Beestonia9

I don't think you need to be worried about that. Many adults read a book to soothe their mind before sleeping. But they are still able to read during the day without falling asleep.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  Před 2 měsíci +1

It really depends on the babies age. Generally in the first 4 months bedtime varies and is late. So it’s hard to keep the timing of it consistent. After 4 months bedtime tends to because predictable (occurring within the same 30min window) so keeping it at the same time is a lot easier. For kids this age and up it is important to try and keep the timing of bedtime consistent as this helps with their circadian rhythm.

I recommend reading “12 hours sleep in 12 weeks” first of all, but just wanted to let you ladies know it’s probably because the baby doesn’t know how to put themselves back to sleep from a moment of wakefulness. This is a learned skill is adults take for granted, and usually if you don’t practice with them the baby won’t learn until they’re much older. All you gotta do is keep them in the crib at all costs at nap time, and don’t go thing to them the second they wake up fussing. use soothing techniques like a hand on the chest, a binky, or shushing sounds to get them to settle down when they fuss. The moment they’re relaxed enough to calm down, walk away and give them a few minutes. If they can’t calm down themselves then you go back and repeat the process until the nap is over and over time they’ll learn to either put themselves back to sleep or just rest a little and relax until it’s time to get up again.

    • @KadiViitak
      @KadiViitak Před 2 měsíci +4

It's because their sleep is going to become similar like us grown ups sleep. Only we have this ability to go to the next sleeping cycle. Babys doesn't have that skill. You have to teach them and help them sleep further. You can just rock them or do something other to help them sleep longer. Anything that suits for your baby. Another thing is that your baby is going through a sleep regression and doesn't need to take too many naps. Babies have awake windows and you can see some signs if they are really tired to take for a longer nap. Sometimes they are overtired too. That has effect on them too. This channel has so many videos about babys sleep. Just search from here. But from my experience.. sometimes babys are just who they are and you'll never know why they behave like they do.😂😅😊

Your baby may also just have less sleep needs! My baby only needs about 13-14 hours of sleep per day and with 3 naps, daytime can take quite a dent in her sleep but she takes shorter naps during the day, and a longer stretch at night. I wouldn’t be concerned unless it’s causing babe lots of discomfort and they’re constantly fussy. If they seem well rested, I wouldn’t worry. Some babies just need shorter naps

I have a question: my 10 month old changed her sleep routine recently dropping the nap before dinner and going to sleep earlier, at about 7/7.30, but then waking up at 5 after sleeping for 10 hours..I just couldn’t wake up at that hour 😅 anyway, in the last few days, after waking up so early, she takes 2 naps in the morning, even 1 hour long each, at about 8 and then at about 11.. so we are still on 3 naps a day with the one after lunch (at 3 and she sleeps for 2 hours), with bed time now at 8pm and wake up time at 6. The nights also are not very relaxing… cause she moves a lot and maybe wakes up a couple of times, but then immediately falls back to sleep…I’m wondering.. is there something wrong in this routine? 😅

Have you ever checked out the "Ferber Method" for sleep? His book has been invaluable for breaking various "sleep dependence" behaviors!
With having the nipple in the mouth for sleep, I have read that's an indication of an "separation anxious baby". Having the nipple in their mouth tells their brain the mother, food, and comfort is immediately accessible. It's a survival reflex for some babies. Are you away from your baby for long hours during the day? Or not able to hold them much through the day with other children competing for attention? "Baby wearing" helps this.
For my baby, it ended up being that she had a tounge & lip tie, and couldn't get a good "suckle" for comfort or enough to eat at once while nursing... This was making her anxious. About 2-3 weeks after lazering the tie, and I used the "Nini Company" pacifier (the most breastlike paci on the market), she stopped needing a nipple in her mouth at night to fall asleep! (Now, she pushes my breast away before going to bed lol)

I do not have any advice but my little one was exactly the same. I tried everything, we even saw a ‘sleep psychologist.’
I won’t tell you what age he finally started to go to sleep without feeding to sleep and waking several times per night, but I do now have a child who sleeps all night every night with no issues whatsoever. Please take care of yourself as best you can. Your little one is a tiny baby learning and growing and doing the best they can and I am sure you are doing the best you can.

Feeding to sleep is a nightmare for me too 😢 my daughter also needs to be breastfed for sleep. She's 5 months old. I'm ok with night feedings. But I'm concerned about her daytime naps as I'll be going back to work in one more month. Just sharing so that you don't feel alone in this tough phase

Why is it a problem for you that she needs to breastfeed to fall asleep? It is biologically normal. It's just our society that is obsessed with independence that tells us that babies should be able to fall asleep on their own and learn to "self-soothe". With my first baby, I spent so much time trying to get him to sleep independently without feeding, and it caused stress for me and him. I have had two more babies since then, and now I am convinced that the best thing is to follow your instinct. Instinct is amazing. It is there for a reason, it shows us what is best. There is nothing wrong with following your instinct, even if it goes against what "experts", culture, or your family tell you.

Can this be considered a routine: Enter room, turn off lights, rock while shushing to sleep, put in bed...

Hi Emma, since my son was 10 weeks old he only naps 30 - 45 min during the day, no matter what we try and I've watched all your videos about catnapping/sleeping etc. He's now 16 weeks and it still hasn't changed. Do you have any advice?

I wonder if there’s something medically going on like reflux that is waking him or causing it to be difficult to sleep for longer periods.

Our routine is: putting all toys in their boxes, closing curtains, saying bye-bye to all the items in living room, turn off light, leave living room for bedroom, changing diaper, massage, interactive book, story book, turn off night light, kiss her on her body, sleep while I lie down next to her in my bed, she in her bed. )) so long 😂

It would take a while to get through that one. 😂But it sounds like you have lots of lovely one on one activities in there.

Bedtime Routine for my 3 months daughter
7pm :After feeding I give her full body massage for 10 mins, change her diaper , put on comfortable sleep suit and put in sleeping sack..
Rock her for sometime and then put her in bed, she takes pacifier for about 10- 15 min, I hold her hand, do a prayer song and she fall asleep around 8pm. Takes full 12 hour sleep. Give her night time feeds with my alarm and put her back in bed.
