Hey, what's up guys? I'm Jason - Welcome to Freebird's Garage, my hobby turned passion.
For as long as I can remember I've been wrenching, whether on my [car] back in high school, dune buggies, my first Sportster, motorcycles through the years, and of course my FXR that really transformed my hobby into this passion.
I love it out in the garage and one day had the crazy idea to start filming the hours spent out there, putting what I love the most out into the world, and helping anyone who wants to wrench and ride.
Glad to have you here for the adventure.
And as always, STAY FREE.

Hahaha you've been put on notice. Now more a curiosity question as I'm sure I'll be sanding the sporty soon, why not use a palm sander for all of this?
Just depends on the job and how much standing. If you put too much pressure on it you can burn through paint or material. The other reason would be creating too many valleys in the paint. With your hand you feel everything and get a super nice consistency on the surface. Honestly if you have questions let me know once you dive into it, love to help if you need it.
Because of this guy, I damaged my bike. For spark plugs Especially for NGK never use anti-seize lubricant it will damage your engine. Hate this channel!!!
Sorry, to hear about that. Always refer to the manual on your exact bike. This is a 1998 sportster mentioned in the video. The plugs are OEM Champion copper and to use anti-seize stated by the Harley-Davidson manual. I never mentioned NGK to be used and you should never use anti-seize with those plugs.
Haha looks like your painting in the dark.
Well that because...I am lol. But with a little light in the back
Hard work is paying off. Can’t wait to see it done.
I appreciate you watching and commenting man, stoked to see the black back on it and smoothed out.
About to take possession of a 92 fxr low rider. Rode dirt bikes as a kid but know nothing about harleys. I knew CZcams wouldn’t let me down. Thanks for these videos.
absolutely, and great cross over bike from dirty bikes. I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
I love it when a plan comes together! Man, that thing is gonna look sharp when it's all said and done! Good video Jay!
I appreciate it man and for watching!! This pin stripping part is going to a trip hoping the idea works lol
Looks like a cool place. Heck of a wine pour. Haha. I gotta get back to Michigan with the bike. Love Michigan riding. Cool ride. 🤘
lol I didn't even notice that, that pour is insane. As you know winters are long but the summer's here are so hard to beat. I appreciate you stopping by and watching Mike!
Dawwww you're supposed to spin it to her that a great date night would be sanding and painting so you'd do half the work. Totally missed the mark here lol
Dawgg that would of been a great idea. "Here is your very own stool to sit on too! We will get it done in no time!" 😆😆 I appreciate you watching man!
Good stuff! You got the wife on camera! Mine hates to be in front of the camera but is comfortable to be behind it. Good luck in the merch for the ladies. I’m not there yet but if you find a good company let me know! Good video my friend! But dude, I don’t do pickled eggs! 🤢
It's funny how we are all use to it and don't realize until you try to show them they hate it lol But yours is hilarious, you guys make a great combo on and off camera. Will do man, them pickled eggs come in the clutch when your starving at the bar 😂 nobody wants them so plenty to have.
Best date nights include a ride to and from. Thanks for sharing
They are! The ones you remember the most too, thank you for watching!
Bro! Why are you not using guide coat?? Also if you want to sand without a mask, do it wet!
I know rookie mistake on both ends, Eastwood makes a good one too. I appreciate the comments and the heads up too!
My stator magnet is not that easy cannot it get off to save my life
There is a tool, but you can use the two allen tools to pry it out. Gotta be careful not to let go and slam it, it'll cause the magnets to break loose.
@@freebirdsgarage thanks man worked like a charm too
Great video I admire your process... I bought a 1991 FXRS Low Rider Ruby Red one owner original at auction last Saturday... COBAR in Nebraska...
At auction those are hard to come by, nice snag!! Thank you for watching and commenting sir!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE how at exactly 3:00 when the most difficult part of the project is reached.... CUT/EDIT, to avoid showing the difficulty involved putting the clutch cable level back on!! "dont want to force" he says... edit edit edit "anything. All done!!!". Thank you come again! Classic. Just classic.
I'm only human man, message on Instagram and I'll help you out.
@@freebirdsgarage lol... no worries my friend. it made me laugh!! i was waitng sooooooo anxiously to get to that point (I was stuck) and all the sudden -#*MAGIC/POOF*#- it was connected! It still helped me a lot :)
Damn the crack! Now do you wear a mask when sanding or just blowing primer snot rockets later?
😂 I knew someone was going to catch that. But them primer buggers ain't no joke! I appreciate you watching man!
How has that black widow scissor jack held up after all time?
I need to do a full review, but high recommend. I use it just as much as my lift.
Your hard work is paying off.
Thank you!!
Man just keep on getting it done a little at a time! You’re trying to make it look good and do it the right way. That takes time my friend. Good luck and keep it coming man!!!
I greatly appreciate the kind words man! I've been stressed out over a lot of this. I just got to keep pushing and little bit at a time!!
can u use the oem wiring for the integrated tail light?
Yes, but you will need to add a load resister or add a LED turn signal flasher module.
Looking forward to 2025 when it’s ready for paint
Bought a 1999 Sportster S today. I Like the dual front brakes. Paid the sellers asking price of 4K. Couldn’t pas it up. Dark Orange with 6,800 miles. Drove it around the block. It was nasty.. George
Mine did NOT come out that easy 😂 of course cause it’s me, I had to loosen the 2 clamp bolts in the back and then it finally came out, have a 2011 sportster
Hi... I'm trying to understand what you said about the studs on the first generation evo motor.. my studs have a hollow top section with threads inside where the head bolts are solid bolts that thread inside the top of the cylinder studs. ( The head bolts are male and the cylinder studs are female). Is that what you were talking about ?.. because I cannot find anyone who can identify what design my cylinder studs are. Thanks man.
Correct, you can use the older studs. The only problem you have is them being torqued on and weaking the threads.
Did you have to use a promoter before you shot your primer?
I wouldn’t say you are Wrong the way your doing it with adjusting end play with the one spacer is the older way Harley set up the end play. The top hat and shim spacer was the way Harley set it up as long as the shims are on the pulley sprocket side and the large spacer is concentric” cut with a lathe for bearing surface” you should be fine. Some of us don’t have a lathe if the spacer is to big so using the shims to dial in the end play is more practical. Your not wrong tho 2 ways to skin that cat
That’s true, more so assuming that one thing should be another. I appreciate the support on it and for watching! 👊🏼👊🏼
👍👍👍🏍️
Yup, bringing my bike to you, this is coming along very cool
Let's do it!! I appreciate the support and comment sir! 🤘🤘
Man that’s turning out nice! The finished product is gonna be awesome! Great job Jay!
Thank you as always Smitty!! Waiting on this super humidity to go away to lay down some paint. I appreciate you watching and the support!
My man! Awesome you are tackling this yourself, but you need to make your life a little easier by using guide coat before you start sanding, also you can wet sand that primer and you probably won’t run out of paper that way…! I feel like this advice is too late but just throwing it out there. Also don’t hang a fender from above, support it from below inside the fender on a post or rack of some kind. You’re gonna have to back mask and paint the inside separately, you can see how trying to do both kinda screwed up shooting your primer, don’t put yourself through that with base coat!
I appreciate the feedback man, and you are right on about it. I should of used a guide coat. I’ve watch a bunch of Eastwood videos and they preach the stuff. I’m reworking my fender stand, the hanging method did not work lol. Thank you for watching and commenting! 👊🏼
Why do all these stator repair videos include annoying/loud background music? ...... my search continues
🤔
Yeah that high build primer is just amazing, Just got my -83 FXRT up and running this past week, runs Amazing with that 88CI Shovel Stroker
Shovel, stoker, and FXR all in one sounds expensive...I envy that build, so dope!
Nice part about primer is that you can sand it and fix it as much as you need to.
It's a life saver before dumping the big money into the final, I appreciate you watching 👊
Get r done, primer is the time to learn, good luck and work hard. We can watch how to fix mistakes on another project. COBAR the bro from Nebraska 😮
Yes sir!!
Nice!
Thank you!
My 2000 XL1200S is not for sale. Still love it after all these years!
Did you have to relocate the directionals? Looks like they are now behind the batwing.
Nope, but we are looking at doing that.
Looks great, do you have the part numbers for the batwing, shield and compartments?
It should be all in here amzn.to/4cjJR1o
What size bolts did you use to mount it?
I believe it was 3/8 they fitted perfect in the hole with no slop
@@freebirdsgarage thank you
After setting out to change plugs i ended up building an entirely new bike. One thing led to another you know
Hey boss, awesome video. By chance do you have a video on adjusting the stiffness? I can't figure out how.
I do it in this video if that helps czcams.com/video/A2y4vaHhso0/video.html
Can you show a snapshot of those factory torque specs please. I can’t find them anywhere
for which bolt?
What would the factory torque spec be? I can’t find it anywhere
For which part?
SWEET!!!😎😎💯
Looking good so far dude!
Thank you my dude!! I'm really stoked on how the whole paint is coming out so far
Do they make bags like this that attach to quick detach hardware? I really can't stand having the crossover flapto hold them up and they never look semetrical or quite right and looking at that crossover strap kills me. Im looking for bags for a 2024 Breakout 117 that look right and quick detach.
I don't believe they do
@@freebirdsgarage OK thank you.
Great job Bro...
Thank you!!
Man, I can't wait to see the finished product! Looking good Jay!
You and me both! I picked up some paint, about to go full send on this fairing 👊 thanks for watching my friend!
Excellent video brother. Just saved me quite the headache looking at a yellow and blue Vs my existing 2x purple n 2x black lol. I was like, wtf do I do here??? Thanks man, very detailed yet easy to follow.
Do you have the link for the saddlemen gel than you mentioned? I can’t seem to find it
The video is older and you can only get the gel when purchasing a seat with the added option now.
Hi, you said in your video that the VOES is closed (short circuit) at idle and goes open (open circuit) under high vacuum. Are you sure about this? I just pulled the VOES off my 1996 Sportster Sport (during carby rebuild, had good access to pull it and check it out). I found that my VOES is open circuit with no vacuum applied and when I apply approximately 4.5 inches of mercury vacuum with my vacuum hand pump, the VOES goes short circuit. This implies that the VOES is open circuit at times of low/no vacuum and short circuit at times of high vacuum. To me, times of lower vacuum on a carby bike are wide open throttle and and times of higher are vacuum/closed throttle and partial throttle at lower rpms when lugging up a hill for example. So, i think the VOES tells the timing to retard when it closes (goes short circuit) due to high vacuum (ie: idle/closed throttle and partial throttle at low engine rpms) to help avoid detonation in those situations. It lets the ignition advance by opening (open circuit) at times of low vacuum (ie: wide open throttle and higher engine rpms?
