A fun fact I feel that people should know is about the music itself; throughout the entire film, all the music was made by one man in particular, Alan Menken, who made basically any Disney film you've ever seen (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Tangled, and even non-Disney things such as Little Shop of Horrors, Newsies, everything down to the sound effects in Home Alone). For this movie, in particular, he used Latin, which all of the Angels/Spirits are chanting. When Frollo says, "It's not my fault," they reply, "Mea Culpa," which translates to my fault. When Frollo says, "God have mercy on me," they reply, "Kyrie eleison," which translates to Lord Have Mercy. Though the original story, he has more compassion which is shown both in the French translation and stage play, instead of insisting it isn't his fault he pleads and asks the saints "Is it my fault?!"

There are a few non disney animated films that never get the same kind of love that diney does, but they are fabulous! -The Princess and the pea(2002), "Kingdom of the heart" or "The Perfect Princess" or "The Wide Open World" The Swan Princess: "This is my Idea" or "Far Longer Then Forever" or "Princess on Parade" or "No more, Mr. Nice Guy" Thumbelina: "Soon" or "Let Me Be Your Wings" or On the Road" or "Follow Your Heart" or "Yer Beautiful, Baby" or "Marry the Mole" Anastasia: "Once Upon a December" or "Journey to the past" or "Learn to do it" or "In the Dark Of the Night" or "A Rumor In St. Petersburg" Odd one out, but one of the most impactful musical numbers makes me cry every time: The Prince of Egypt "Deliver Us(opening song)" or second pretty good one is "When you Believe" Any kind of review on any of these would be great, and no, they are not as rap or hip-hop as some of the other ones. Have you had a chance to read about what the show is about since you first watched this scene from the Tony’s? Aaron’s character, the son is a figment of his mom’s imagination. He died in childhood and she is delusional and can’t give him up. Hasn’t been able to grieve her loss. The father can not accept the wife’s mental illness and her inability to give up the fantasy of her son..at the end, the father finally comes to terms with the loss of Gabe, his son, and he finally “comes to him” and there is a reconciliation of sorts. You have to watch a slime of this. It’s fabulous.

I’m such a huge fan of this musical, and it’s wild to watch people react to this cold. Pure chaos.

Beth Howland, who is famous for playing Vera in television series Alice, originated the role on Broadway, and did a phenomenal job. Although I am a HUGE fan of both Darren Criss and Madeline Kahn so I tend to prefer the performances of this song, Howland's, performance really can't be beat. Her high, squeaky voice really adds to the performance, by making her sound even more nervous than other performances of this song.

One other comment as someone who just stumbled into the musical through this number and who watched the full show recording that the clip you saw is from a few days ago: the audience is absolutely DEAD in that recording. Plenty of lines, songs, etc that would have evoked a response got next to nothing. Enough to know the audio would be able to pick it up if there was clapping, laughter etc - they just weren't reactive. The show toes the line between absurd and heartfelt very well, IMO. By the time we get to the Ballad of Jane Doe, we've already established that line pretty well, so the "should I laugh or cry" tone isn't out of left field. I'm not sure if this is a theater show "type", but the show is structured like CATS in the sense that it's a bunch of individual "this is my character!" songs with a narration vaguely stringing them together, the overarcing plot being "one person gets to go to the Heaviside Layer"/"one person gets to be resurrected". Of course, it's a bunch of dead teenagers, not a bunch of living cats, but you get the idea? The only problem is that I can't entirely decide who the Grisabella stand-in would be in RTC. In one sense, it would definitely be Jane Doe, and I think it could be argued that her song is one turning point in the show? But Jane Doe is only the second-to-last character, and I'd actually argue that the last character to sing, another girl, has the emotional catharsis of the show and ties a lot of the themes together/moves the plot to its conclusion. I saw a theory that suggested the five different kids are the five different stages of grief, and if that theory is even close to the mark, it makes sense why the last girl is the last. But oh well, I'm rambling. This musical is fascinating and I've been enjoying the content on it. Glad to see you found it!
