Besides “Chicago”, “Sweeney Todd”, and “Cabaret”, I noticed references to “Pippin” “A Chorus Line”, “Company” and even “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Welcome to the era of jazz musicals and rock operas.

Aaron Tveit looks like a Jesus Christ Superstar/Hair/Godspell mashup

Did you notice that Kristen Chenoweth's character's portrait was hanging up in the orphanage shot? My fingers are very very crossed that she's playing a mix between mrs. Lovett from Sweeney Todd and mrs. Hannigan from Annie. I just wanna know: ARE THEY BAKING THE ORPHANS INTO PIES!?

I got: Chicago (obviously), Pippin (the white hands, the off kilter choreography in that opening Street number, and Titus' snarky narrator), Cabaret, Sweet Charity, Sweeney Todd, Annie (is Kristen Chenoweth a hybrid of Mrs Lovett and Miss Hannagen?), Hair/Godspell, and a wink to A Chorus Line with the headshots

And at 2:43 you can hear the opening notes of "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" from Company

I am very excited for the next season! Aside from what you mentioned, there's definite references to Hair and A Chorus Line, as well, which is certainly going to be fun :D

Watching this trailer has sent me down a pippin rabbit hole. The white hands and the Fosse choreography got me.

I did notice the reference to Pippin with the gloves at the beginning and the opening number. Also, Tituss Burgess playing a character called “Leading” referencing the Leading Playing from Pippin!

And that jazz hands walk thing is pure Pippin.

The whole opening "Schmicago" number is a parody of "Magic to Do" from Pippin. Just like "Schmigadoon" was a parody of "Oklahoma!".

I think 'Chicago' is the type of ending that can be seen as both happy and tragic; yes, most of the cast of characters are happy, but at what cost? They have been corrupt with fame, attention, greed and murderous "love".

Loved this reaction!! I'm a musical theatre historian and Schmig-aholic! I have episode by episode breakdowns of Season 1 for all the easter eggs and references, which I think you might enjoy! I also have 2 trailer breakdowns for Season 2. 🙂
