hi friends, hope you had a great summer :)
The musical series #SCHMIGADOON! just wrapped up its first season on #Apple Tv+ and I want to talk about it! so that’s what we’re gonna do.
Schmigadoon, as you can probably guess, is a riff on Brigadoon (a 1947 musical) and parodies many other Golden Age #Broadway musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. These include musicals like THE KING AND I, CAROUSEL, OKLAHOMA, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, SOUTH PACIFIC, and many more! The series stars Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Armisen, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ariana DeBose, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Martin Short, and Aaron Tveit.
#QOTD: what's YOUR favorite golden age musical? let me know in the comments down below !!

“Your boyfriend’s a jerk and Aaron Tveit is right there” is the pep talk I needed today 🙌🏻😂
I wish I could say this in real life.
I want more seasons but I also want each season to be a new couple trapped in a different era of musicals but with the same cast playing different character troupes in the town.
ooh nice
I would love thst
Wish granted it seems!
This aged well 😉 musical theatre nerds think alike
U get it
I liked Schmigadoon and was shocked by how many references I didn’t catch even though I love Broadway. I really need to listen to some of the soundtracks referenced. Chenoweth was awesome and a perfect fit.
And Chenoweth's take on You Got Trouble from The Music Man would have made Robert Preston smile.
im happy she got to do the 'trouble' song.
My family is absolutely OBSESSED with shmigadoon! We watch it over and over again and we’ve all memorized the songs (even my 6 year old brother lol)
oh i love that
As a massive theatre fan who hasn't really gotten the opportunity to see any of the references from the show, Schmiggadoon was /still/ HILARIOUS. I loved everything about it! A detail I thought was especially good, and I realise it's obvious, is the painted backgrounds. That was always a thing I loved as a kid in movie musicals like Wizard of Oz and I thought it was a great touch.
AARON TVEIT WILL ALWAYS MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER ! Also get me a man that would treasures me like Danny did (those high waisted pants 😩 YEE- HONK)
"you're boyfriend's a jerk and aaron tveit is out there" , honestly same kat. loved your review and schmigadoon! can't wait to see if it has a second season and what the creators come up to. My favourite golden age musical is Singin' in the Rain (yes, i can be that cliche but I can't help it, I'm a huge fan of the movie and has a special place in my heart)
I absolutely LOVED Schmigadoon! It actually got me teary near the end
I love this show! One pet peeve from a costumers perspective is that Ariana’s character very clearly wasn’t wearing support garments. They added a line about the character not wearing corsets and that is supposed to imply that she’s progressive, but that is a relatively modern trope. And I think especially in comparison to the other characters, it makes her costume look like more like a party city costume and everyone else is dressed so well.
I feel the same way, I loved the show but that line of her saying corsets are horrible made me cringe so badly
James Corden should give his superpower or appearing in movie musicals to Aaron Tveit and Ariana DeBose, I want to see THESE TWO in everything now
See, while she had to “Take A Break” we kept saying “You’ll be back.” and “click boom” now she’s here.
We love you Kat! 💜
Happy Belated Birthday! 🥳
Guys & Dolls has a special place in my heart. In high school, I was in the band, but our band was SO SMALL that we didn't have a horn in F player (but we had 4 alto saxes). Since we only *needed* three saxes, the band director asked if I'd be willing to transpose the Horn in F part to E-flat. After 3 days of writing out the score, I took a good, hard look at it, and started transposing by sight. A week later, I was accidentally transposing actual alto music in regular band, so the director threw the Horn in F parts for what we were doing there at me, as well.
I gotta say, I had some of the best parts that year. Especially in Guys & Dolls.
I have missed you so much Kat! I was just thinking about rewatching your old vids because I have an audition for a play tomorrow!
what are you auditioning for? ❤️🔥break a leg !!!
@@Kath_Steele I'm auditioning for my high school production of The Hobbit, and there are a lot of new people.
Personally I really enjoyed Schmigadoon. Because of it's Golden Age musical vibe it felt very whimsical and fun which is nice to have when you're in a global pandemic and the world seems like it's falling apart.
I also loved the representation in it and the fact that Kristin Chenoweth just made me laugh so much.
I'm hoping for Season 2 (and that it will be good if it comes)!
Yay! You're alright. We missed you. And I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on this. :)
My favorite golden age musical is Oklahoma for sure. King and I is my second. ETA: oh shoot, totally forgot about The Sound of Music. What's wrong with me? That one's my favorite!
I freaking loved Schmigadoon. Smiled like a geek the entire time. I definitely would have stayed there for [Aaron], that rapscallian...
Kristen Chenoweth and Dove Cameron back together again....nice😌
This was the most entertaining show to watch with my theatre friends! all the little nuances and jokes were so well done and researched. The squeals that came out of our mouths when Aaron Tveit had his first solo and he did a body percussion moment that led into a dance break! UEG I loved the golden age vibes. ALSO so happy to have our cult leader back! We missed you.
My favorite is probably Cinderella, though I like it mostly because the Whitney Houston version is god tier (I will not budge on this take), though I do appreciate the recent version where they changed plot points to sound a little less dated.
In terms of the show, Danny and Doctor Lopez were more interesting love interests to me (more so Danny than the doctor but they were both looking right). Also, I wish they used Peppermint more because I really adore they’re musical talents. Also Alan Cummings needs to do more musicals instead of just doing Caberet every few years because the man is talented.
KAT YOUR BACK!!! WELCOME!!
The way I've missed Kat's content!!!!! I'm living!!!!!
Bold of you to assume I wouldn’t enjoy being trapped in a musical from the 1940s…
When Kat says she loves you, all the absolute bullsh*t you’ve been through the past two weeks go away ❤️
I have been singing the songs from “Schmigadoon” since August when I first saw it. To ME, that is the sign of a truly GOOD musical: if you leave the theatre humming some of the tunes, then it’s an unmitigated success. I grew up on the film soundtrack of “The Music Man” with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones and have always wished I had the ability to perform “Trouble” which is VERY difficult. Chenoweth’s take on it as “Tribulation” is an inspired tour de force as it was done only once and in one take. The line of “cows and sheep having amorous congress” as a sign of social collapse is simply hilarious. For ANY true theatre creature, ”Schmigadoon“ should be required viewing. Can’t wait to see it’s adaptation into an honest-to-God live Broadway musical. How hard could THAT transition be?...
I had so much fun with this. I love how much it embraces the magical realism of musicals. It throws you in to the premise and doesn't spend any time explaining it. I expected it to just be a mockery of musical tropes but like you said it comes from a place of love!
OH, YOU’RE BACK!!! WE’VE MISSED YOU!!!
My favorite Golden Age musical would probably have to be either “The Music Man” or “The Sound of Music”.
YAY SHES ALIVE IM SO HAPPY
The cult leaders ads are iconic.
🥰🥰🥰
The queen is back!!!!! All bow down!!! 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
I mean I'm still obsessed with the In the Heights movie soundtrack but yeah
Ka- Kath- Katherine uploaded?
KATHERINE UPLOADED AWWWW YAYY
My thoughts:
- I wanted clearer rules as to how Scmigadoon worked as a universe
- it was clear Ariana’s character had a secret, I wished it was (and possibly still could be in season 2) that she also got stuck there from the real world
- should’ve been a longer season, and only 1 season. One self contained story
- season 2 HAS to open with a black screen and the muffled sound of the ensemble singing “there’s hope for all and we call it schmiga-“ and then we hear the full sound of a “doon!!!!” And then we fade in and Melissa and Josh are still in Schmigadoon.
I have no opinion on Schmigadoon, as I dont have Apple TV+... but Im just glad to see your face again!
I agree with everything your saying! Plus Dove Cameron is amazing as Betsy; the way her character pays homage to all the old school musical heroines and the humor‼️I heard on an interview that Dove improvise making the sign the cross in song “Till I’m A 👰♀️!”
Love Keegan. Hot take: I loved him in the prom
I have a crush on him ever since The Prom.
just wanted to say that your videos have helped me so much! I just finished playing Pilar/Chutney in legally blonde and your tips and tricks were a life saver ❤️❤️❤️
aw thank you🥰 i hope you had a great time!!
So good to see ur bubbly personality back in my screen. We love you Kat :)
I loved the series and, at times laughed out loud. The "lifting" of iconic Broadway songs was great. I especially liked Ann Harada's song about her husband with the not so veiled references to his being gay. One odd thing is that when she's on SNL Cecily Strong doesn't seem to sing very well whereas on Schmigadoon, she shows off a very good singing voice. You're right about Ariana Debose. I still remember her from SYTYCD and look a how far she's come. From "the Bullet" in Hamilton to becoming a Broadway star, getting a Tony nomination, being great in the movie version of The Prom and in Schmigadoon, to playing Anita in Spielberg's upcoming West Side Story, is not too shabby a career path is it?
i have an audition this week which it’s time for my favorite pastime- procrastinating on practicing my monologue by binge watching Katherine Steele videos ( please don’t try this at home)
break a leg!! 💖💖
Omg sameee break a leg!!
I am so happy you are back!!
Picking a favorite golden age musical is like choosing a favorite child! I'm gonna have to go with "Music Man" since it was my introductory musical, as I played Amaryllis in elementary school. I even got to play Marian my senior year of high school, which was an experience I'll never forget.
AHH I'M SO HAPPY YOU POSTED YOU MADE MY DAY EVEN BETTER WELCOME BACK!
I have missed your videos so much!!! Your videos are always the highlight of my day and I appreciate everything that you do for CZcams.
You’re back!!! We’ve missed you so much!! I’ve been watching all of your audition tips video because I had a show (and audition) over the summer, and I also have an audition in September.
Missed you so much kat! I hope you really took time to rest and enjoy summer, even though it felt so short 💔
You're Back!!!!! Yayyyyyyy!!!!!!
That’s so crazy I just finished watching the series 20 minutes ago! Hope you’re doing well Kat. ❤️ Missed ya!
Ever since I started this show I've been anticipating you talking about it so I'm so glad this is the video you've decided to make after your break. I don't really know much about classic musicals but I found it incredibly enjoyable regardless. I'm so glad to hear you liked it. Lowkey my main gripe was that Jane Krakowski was only in one episode because her being in it was a (small) part of why I started watching the show and I waited way longer than I wanted to for her to show up. No matter. The cast killed it (though I will say I didn't totally buy Josh and Melissa's relationship, they had little chemistry which almost definitely would've been helped by more scenes together). Bottom line is this show was super creative and well done and definitely shouldn't have a second season because I feel like the story is basically complete. I kinda like that the ending was left open-ended.
Yay I was happy that you posted ! happy a amazing day I will watch the show soon
THIS MADE MY WHOLE DAY!!!! YAY!!!! YOU'RE BACK!!!!!!
WHEN I SAW THIS VIDEO, I GOT SO EXCITED!! OMG!!
Hi kat! I just wanted to say I'm playing Patrice in 13 and all your tips have really helped!! Thank you for all your amazing content ✨✨💓
welcome back kat we missed you!
🥰🥰🥰
Yay! I’m so happy to see you again Kat. Love you
I was just thinking yesterday how much I was missing your videos and HERE YOU ARE 🥰
Yee honk, this was great. I absolutely adored Schmigadoon. I’d love to see you break down the songs and their original references for your audience who may not be too familiar with Golden Age musicals.
Welcome back! I've missed your videos so much.
I didn’t expect to cry during this show! But the finale was just *chefs kiss* also the way Kristin Chenoweth said “I hate you” made me dieee
You’re back!!! We missed you so much
I’m so exited! I missed your videos so much and have been craving theater stuff sense my show was recently cancelled (4 months practice a week before the show) because of a COVID case.
OMGGGGGG I’VE MISSED YOU SO MUCH KAT!! 🙌🥺👏🙏💖
Being trapped in a musical from the 1950’s would be a dream come true. It’s the golden age of musicals...let’s not forget that.
i am so glad you brought up how the relationship didn't get the healing it needed! that was literally my one complaint about it. i hated how it turned into melissa saying "oh i'm sorry i'll just try to expect less." i was like ???? josh is kind of a jerk still girl!
AHHHH KATS BACK!! I hope you’re doing well and had a great break ❤️
thank you! 🥰🥰 hope you’re doing well too!!!
ahhh tysm!!!
oh my gosh you're back!!! yay we missed you! I was just thinking I should watch some of your old videos to prep for an upcoming audition I have :)

kat is back!!!!!!! YESSSSSSS
I absolutely LOVED Schmitagoon!!! i think my favorite part was all the references to all the golden age musicals. Oklahoma has a HUGE place in my heart since it was first musical i did in high school. And i was just fan girling over all those references.
I loved it so much! It was heartfelt & sincere but also wacky and out there. It was great
THE QUEEN IS BACK AFTER ALL THIS TIME YAAAAS
My latest show was Oklahoma! I felt really lucky to be in it as my school was the only one able to put on a live show in my area last year. I loved it :)
I MISSED YOU SM!
so happy you're back! my all time favorite is The Music Man.
I missed you! I was wondering how you were doing! I love you so much! You are amazing!
I made my parents watch Schmigadoon, and they liked it! Even if they're not big musicals fan, they find it really cool!
kat's back yay!!!
Definitely loved all the references in the show but the parody of Ya Got Trouble was amazing
As someone who grew up on all the Golden Age musicals thanks to my dad renting all the movies and playing the cassettes in the car during road trips, I was absolutely *cackling* at all the references! I loved it- so spot on.
Yay, I’ve been missing our theater internet cult! I hope you’re doing well! 😊
HOORAY!! KAT’S BACK!! Xxx
Hey, Kat, it's great to see you again! Hope that you've been doing well!
EDIT: I just finished watching Schmigadoon with my family and we all loved it! Can't wait for Season 2!
As someone who just watched it because aaron I loved hearing your thoughts. I also love musicals but that’s not important. I agree with everything you said about aaron. I binged it in one night once all the episodes were out and I was left wanting more. I’m looking forward to season two if it happens.
My favorite is She Loves Me!! a enemies-to-lovers plot with stunning music?!? 😍
Brigadoon, just because I got to be Meg Brockie and it just holds a special place in my heart. I also have a love for Oklahoma and Sound of Music as The Sound of Music was the first musical I performed in.
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT, I'M SO HAPPY YOU POSTED A NEW VIDEO.
I've been mildly worried, and don't use Twitter/Instagram so wasn't sure if you were even still active anywhere else
AHHHHH FIRST
LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH!
Also, got any stage manager advice?
Kath’s back! We missed you
Yes, but your kitchen is sooo pretty!’❤️❤️❤️❤️
We love you kat!
Cinco is lovely. I wrote quite an in depth analysis of The Mayors story and how they got it so right, and he retweeted it and made a point of saying how much it meant to him. Angel.
I CANT WAIT TO WATCH IT NOW!!!
ahhh i've missed you!!
Hello and welcome back, dearest! Great to see you again! 😀
At first, I was taken aback by Schmigadoon, but then I quickly learned to love it. Melissa's sex-ed parody song of "Do Re Mi" had my mouth falling to the floor, love her sex positivity. If I ever have kids, I'm just gonna show them that song when they hit puberty and start asking questions.
I absolutely shrieked aloud when I saw Jaime Camil as the doctor. He is Mexican telenovela royalty, and one of my teenage crushes back in the day (as a Latina, I was raised in telenovelas). If you want to see him be hilarious in his own country, watch "La fea más bella" (The Most Beautiful Ugly Girl). It's a Mexican adaptation of Ugly Betty (the OG was Colombian and part of my childhood).
One of my favorite jokes is on the hill when Betsy admires the tree her dad planted when she was born, but Josh saw it was just a sapling and was like "oh God NOOOOO!" (Also, he definitely has more chemistry with Emma than with Melissa). Another one is the Mayor's wife song about her husband, oh but did I cringe and laugh at the same time.
Oh, my favorite Golden Age Musical would probably be Sound of Music or My Fair Lady, with Carousel a close second (I'd rank it higher, but Julie constantly frustrates me. I keep screaming "STOP BEING A DOORMAT!!!!!"). I like the songs of Oklahoma, by I just can't fully get behind the characters. I hate Curly, tend to feel sorry for Judd even if I hate his actions and I'm mixed on Granny. Also, I never liked the final trial, always seemed very corrupt to me. Oliver with always have a place in my heart cause it was one of the last musicals with my 1st musical theatre theater teacher/ director before he sadly died and my second ever musical, period.
And yes, Aaron Tveit should definitely play an adorable himbo in everything.
