Um, no, many movies don't have songs/dance. Firstly, you seem to be speaking mostly of Hindi films (it's very different in Marathi cinema etc.). Also parallel (indie, arthouse) cinema usually doesn't have song/dance. There are also a lot of serious movies that are very grounded and have no music or dance. See the Marathi film Court, it's one of the best movies every made coming out of India.

Yes it is common in almost all Indian movies to have multiple songs(4-6) in the movie. In India the movie industry and music industry are not two different things. The songs themselves are excellent but for your info, not all these songs are well placed and justified in terms of the movie progression. Sometimes we even lose the extreme emotions that we've been carrying throughout the movie. But that's not the case with RRR's Naatu Naatu though. It comes at an important junction and perfectly justifies it's presence, which is why it got an Oscar lately 🎥🏆🎥🏆

I will let people who are far more familiar with Indian cinema recommend more movies/scenes to watch, but just to pick up on 2 things from the beginning of the video: this is actually the 4th "Non-English lyrics" song to win the Oscar for Best Original Song, but it's the first to even be nominated from an Indian production, let alone win. ("Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire" did win, and is mostly in Hindi, but the movie was a British production directed by Danny Boyle. "RRR" is a Telugu-language production directed by SS Rajamouli.) Secondly, and I am getting this information from a brilliant analysis by an Indian guy who broke down a lot of symbolism and references that Western audiences might have missed in the movie- "Naatu Naatu" does not really translate to "Dance Dance". The lyricist- Chandrabose- drew on his childhood experiences of growing up in the country, and "Naatu" actually means raw, unpolished, rustic, etc. If you watch the movie, you'll see how this dance scene is set up: a racist Englishman is trying to embarrass the Indian man by calling him uncultured and saying he has no "finesse". So his friend (the one you wanted to win), sets up a "country dance" for the two of them to show the white guests at the party that letting loose and dancing "like you've just eaten a hot chili or like a bull jumping in the fields" can be fun and exciting, which leads into a dance battle between the Indian guys and the racist jerk, who loses, and then the 2 Indian guys battle each other in a friendly way. Many Westerners saw "RRR" on Netflix, which only has the Hindi dub, and the subtitles for the scene say "Dance Dance", but it's not really a direct translation. Sorry to write an essay but this movie is SOOOOOO good and I really wanted you (or anyone who hasn't seen it yet) to get a little more background on this scene. Again- this info comes from someone else, I'm just passing it along. Cheers!

@@SEBOSONORO Sometimes when I post links in YT comments, they are blocked, so I will just give you the channel name: @rrrmoviereactionreviewanalysis His first video was 2.5 hours (!) but it was so informative. He has since chopped some of it down, so you can find just the dance section if that's all you want to learn about, but I really enjoyed the full-length video. Just a note, though- he is analysing based on the Hindi dub for this song (which is also what this guy is watching) and I got a lot of info about Chandrabose's original Telegu lyrics and their translation from an article in a trade publication when the song was nominated for so many awards. I think it was Variety but I can't recall. That's where I learned that he wrote the lyrics based on his childhood. Cheers!

As a French fan of Indian cinema (I've seen around 650 Indian movies) I can recommend some really good musical numbers 😊 To answer your question first, there is no rule as to how many a movie has. Traditionally for a mainstream Bollywood movie (Bollywood = Hindi speaking) it would be around 5 but not all of them have a choreography, sometimes it's just characters doing stuff while a full song plays. But in some movies you will have just 1. Sometimes none. Sometimes just 1 for fun in the end credits. RRR (a Tollywood/Telugu speaking movie) is an epic bromance with anticolonial backdrop, big action and emotions, and it features 4 full songs: 3 in pivotal scenes (but only Naatu Naatu has a choreography) and 1 in the end credits.
In general Indian movies that have musical numbers are not musicals as we understand the genre in the west but rather just... movies with songs. So there is no rule as to how many songs there should be and what style the songs should be in and what genre the movie is (as opposed to actual musicals that have a specific structure and vibe).
Here are some musical numbers you should check out:
_Chaiyya Chaiyya_ from the movie Dil Se, ICONIC musical number from the late 90s. Music AR Rahman (who got an Oscar for the Slumdog Millionaire OST back in 2009), choreography by Farah Khan who is very renowned in Bollywood. The song features Shah Rukh Khan who is still today the biggest star in India. The director of the movie, Mani Ratnam, is one of the most renowned directors of the country.
_Satrangi Re_ also from Dil Se. If you love choreography you will love this. It's very atmospheric and very symbolic, and shot in some amazing Indian locations.
_Rowdy Baby_ from the movie Maari 2. One of the most viewed Indian songs on CZcams: 1.4 BILLION views. Quirky choreo by one of the most renowned dancers/choreographers of India, Prabhudeva, nicknamed the MJ of India. The lead actress Sai Pallavi is known for her excellent acting and dancing.
_Pranavalaya_ from Shyam Singha Roy. Also with actress Sai Pallavi. It shows classical Indian dancing.
_Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka_ from Devdas. With Aishwarya Rai (I'm assuming you have heard of her? Former Miss World). Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is known for movies with lavish sets and stunning cinematography. In this song, which is early in the movie when Aishwarya first appears on screen, she holds a diya (small oil lamp) in her hand while dancing and tries to keep it burning despite the wind and rain as it represents her love for someone.
_Dola Re Dola_ same movie as above. Aishwarya dances with Madhuri Dixit, a renowned actress known for her dancing abilities.
_Malhari_ from the movie Bajirao Mastani. Also directed by Bhansali. You will notice how he uses takes much longer than usual in in his musical numbers which is quite impressive. This time it's all male dancing in period outfits of soldiers (it's a dance of victory). Main actor is Ranveer Singh, known for his energy.
_Tattad Tattad_ from Ram Leela, also directed by Bhansali also with Ranveer Singh. Very colourful, fun steps, everything over the top (just to give you an idea: I don't consider Naaru Naatu to be over the top at all lol). The movie is a Romeo and Juliet adaptation.
_Buttabomma_ from Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. One of the most viewed Telugu songs on CZcams. Very pretty musical number with Allu Arjun who is known to be one of the best actor-dancers in India alongside the 2 actors in Naatu Naatu (Jr NTR and Ram Charan).
Ok well I could recommend tons more lol but that is a good start 😁

styles of dance and mv varies from movie to movie, like "megham Karukata" (jazz style), Jigelu Rani (item number), "maine aisa kyun hoon", "love debba", "Malhari". "Mohe Rang do Laal", "maari thara local ", "Zoobi doobi" etc.
Edit: Suggestion if you are planning to react to Indian Songs in the future I suggest create a different channel as that might alienate your existing viewers and reduce traffic due to algo shenanigans.

Some movies used to add musical numbers in between so that men can get out and have a smoke. Some have them to raise emotional quotient. It's just a bit to relax due to long movies in India.

Like everyone else I agree the song is glorious (and your reaction was perfect!) and you MUST watch the movie. Advance warning, though, there are some parts that can be very distressing, make sure you bring tissues and be prepared to confront some ugly realities of history. Enjoy your foray into Indian cinema - you're going to have such a great time finding a whole new genre of faves.

Some of NTR jr's best dance songs include, in my opinion, Love Dhebba or Apple Beauty. Ram Charan (but mostly Samantha) are wonderful in Rangamma Mangamma. Other high energy songs that you may enjoy include Allu Arjun's Cinema Choopista Mava or Top Lesi Podi.

I'm a bit late commenting.... 😅 If you haven't seen the whole movie? You need to! RRR is the best movie I've seen in DECADES! RRR is a musical & there's another huge choreographed dance at the end~ The movie blew my mind! I'm sure it'll blow yours, too!
