I believe that this Trunchbull was more cruel than the original. You should see the whole movie

this one is actually based on the original book which was much more cruel and a little darker, the 90's movie changed a little bit from the book
you definitely need to watch the film to get the context. sure, miss honey screams with joy, but that’s the whole joke: she would NEVER do that normally. i think the new trunchbull is definitely more threatening and dangerous, and miss honey is definitely more fearful of her
Miss Honey is definitely still scared of Miss Trunchbull, she just got carried away here. I recommend any of the other numbers really but maybe My House because that's key for Miss Honey and The Smell of Rebellion for Trunchbull

In terms of actual actions, I would put the musical Trunchbull as more frightening. However, in terms of filming, I'd say the 90's version was much more frightening.
I think this is because the 90's version was shot from such a low angle, and the Trunchbull is already meant to be a tall, broad, and imposing figure. She's often bending down to stick her face in the camera, as if the viewer was also a child. This makes her feel so much scarier.
In the musical, we often see the Trunchbull from the height of an adult, or from above. She also sometimes has comical lines/expressions all on her own, so she can feel less threatening.
I would not trust either with a single child, let alone a school.
but equally, i think the 2022 film as a whole is definitely more dark, twisted and scary in it’s themes

Apparently the musical creators didn't watch the first movie so theirs is a fresh take on the source material.
Just to point out guys!! The chocolate cake in this one is made to be a lot more "fake" looking because the aim of the movie is not to add realism. Be honest, no kids would start burst out dancing while a kid is eating cake! That's why the old movie was more real with the cake and the effects etc, because its not a musical!

I feel like the musical is more fantasy than the other movie. The old movie just seemed like a horror movie.
Trunchbell is more frightening and cruel in the stageplay. Some of the things she says to Matilda is just awful that wasnt put in the movie.

My House if you want to see Miss Honey's true character and yes it Def made me cry and broke my heart! The miss Honey in the musical is far more downtrodden, abused and frightened of Trunchbull.
