MEGA SNOW WALLS | 🇮🇹 Italy French Border 🇫🇷 | Cycling in the Alps
I'm cycling in the Italian Alps 🇮🇹 just a short drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel under the French Alps 🇫🇷 and 🇮🇹 Italian border. I'm climbing the 🇮🇹 Italian side of the 🇫🇷 Col du Petit St Bernard / 🇮🇹 Colle del Picollo San Bernardo. The Col du Petit St Bernard has been open just a week after the Winter snows have been cleared and there are are over 5 metre snow walls as we approach the summit of the Col.
Welcome to our epic cycling tour through the beautiful Italian Alps! This route took us on a short drive through the Mont Blanc Tunnel from Chamonix to Courmayeur and the spa town of Pre St Didier where the 22km climb to the summit starts.
The Col du Petit St Bernard, or in Italian , Colle del piccolo San Bernardo connects The Italian Aosta Valley and the French Savoie town of Bourg St Maurice via the French ski resort of La Thuille. From late November to late May is closed with snow and the road becomes a ski piste. This year there is a phenomenal amount of snow at the summit.

Our ride on the Col du Petit St Bernard retraces the Tour de France 2009 stage which went from Martigny to Bourg St Maurice. This was the final climb of the stage and where Jens Voigt had a horrendous crash on the descent.
22km at an average 5.5% climbing from 1020M to 2188M - luckily it was a stunning day in the Italian Alps.
🇫🇷 🇮🇹The Col du Petit St Bernard / Colle ded Picollo San Bernardo is usually a Hors Category climb.

Super usefull… thanks a million. La marmotte here we come!
Glad it was helpful! Good luck
You’re looking strong Mike, and that ride looks stunnin’ 😄
Thanks Matt - feeling more with it!
zeer informatief en nuttig, mijn eerste maal de marmotte, deed in het verleden de canibaal. kijk er naar uit. nog een goeie 2 weken
Good luck and don’t go too fast up the Glandon !!
@@CyclingInTheAlps thanks
Superb video Mike, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since we were there.
Thanks Jonnie - yes time flies doesn't it?!!
Fantastic ride, being close to nature, thats why we cycle :)
Thanks Mike - yes its good for the soul isn't it
Great video Mike. I fondly remember that climb and often tell people about it as it is one of the videos I use during my spin classes. I also remember the epic descent off the top on the french side. Keep up the good work Mike and boy do I miss those rides with you in the Alps 😢
Thanks Richard - yes its an epic climb! I can;t believe that was 10 years ago??
Stunning day on the Col du Petit St Bernard. Thanks for watching. Drop any questions below cheers Mike
Sorry to hear about your dads passing Mike. We all deal with grief differently - glad you are back out on the bike; it s much better place to be than the sofa.......
Thanks Richard
Sorry to hear about your father Mike. What sort of mileage you think you will be doing on a weekly basis, I would like to drop a few KG’s, not been on the bike as much this year so far either?
Thanks Andy. I'm aiming to do about 8 hours a week. One long ride towards 100km and then just the usual up and down the local climbs so not massive distance but lumpy. Hipe all well there.
@@CyclingInTheAlps Sounds a good plan mike. Have subscribed and therefore will look forward to your progress with interest. See hello to J.
Glad you're getting out and about again, lovely photo of you and your Dad xx
Sorry to hear about your dad Mike, sending much ❤.
Thanks Jon. Hope all well .
News and stuff from the French Alps - drop any questions below, cheers Mike
Haaallo Sir! I remembered your video when you joined the Tour Des Stations 2023. I joined TDS too last year (2023) and mount saleve was my training ground for TDS. It is indeed a challenging climb especially croisette side. But, it is a very good place to train. Don't get fooled of the avg gradients written it is harder in person. 🤣 Thanks for featuring my favorite climbs. 😁 Do the La Baudichone and La Barillette next! And do an extra Saint Cergue. It is in jura mountain and happy to guide you if you're around geneva. 😄
Thanks for watching - I'll check those climbs out
So no marmotte then this year Mike? 🙁🤣🤣
Definately not - unless a miracle happens and I do this one! tourdesstations.ch/granfondo/
Hi Mike - great to see you back on the bike and posting again - I've missed those views! I'm in a similar position with training up and down this year and am just getting over covid (its still around.....). I have a week in Bormio early July followed by a week just outside Samoens, so need to get my but in gear too!! Good luck with your return to fitness - I will be following with interest! 👊💪
Thanks Richard. Enjoy your trips !
Amazing spin,thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching - please check out my other uploads thanks Mike
Go Mike! Never mind the views and mountain air, those road surfaces look like a world apart from the potholes and traffic around me!
Thanks Leigh. We do have some potholes! I will try and get them on film next time :-)
Those views 😍...great to see you back Mike...
Thanks Adam. Enjoy your trip.
It'll definitely come back with some consistent training & what a motivator getting to see those amazing views to reward the effort. Im just building back from knee surgery in March & with a really good plan from my coach & consistent training my fitness has really been building - good job as im off to Nice to try and enjoy L'Etape this year after last years brutal day out
Thanks for your support Noel. Good luck with the Etape.
Great to see you back Mike! We’re all rooting for you, and I’ll use you as my inspiration to get back to fitness too 😊
Thanks - much appreciated. Good luck with your regime.
Good luck Mike, we'll all be watching!
Thanks Bill - will drop you a line on messenger

Thanks for watching!
Back on the bike! 4 months of little exercise and its time to ditch 6 kg's.
Welcome back, enjoy the rides and scenary. You will be back to full fitness before the new tyres need replacing :)
Love this video. Watching for second time as great prep and realistic for cyclists of more advanced age like myself!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful.
This is really helpful. Do you know what km the water stops are at?
Thanks Gary - there used to be a profile plan on the oficial website however I cannot see that on the new version - this one is a copy of it half way down the page www.granfondoguide.com/Events/Index/593/marmotte-gran-fondo-alps
I did it on the same day, and I am even visible in your video (in the Valley at the railroad crossing). Congrats for the race and the video. It made me relive an extraordinary day!
Brilliant well done!
Well done!! I just L’Etape Texas and only the 25 miles!! Great respect for you mate!! Du Tour is no joke!! Definitely on my list.. one day. But first I need a ton of training!!! A ton.. maybe two!
Thanks!
i did one fact of this and it destroyed me, good man!
Thanks for watching! Some of the climbs are easier than others !!
Tour des Stations currently has the slowest website ever though…never known one so bad. It’s like being on dail-up!
Mine or theirs? ❓
@CyclingInTheAlps theirs mate, sorry. Been trying to read the individual distance pages but gave up. Unless they are doing some site maintenance perhaps?
@@cd66061Yep just tried it - very slow - the home page has the distances in their logos at the bottom of the page - that comes up quick
@CyclingInTheAlps edited my post so it didn't look like it meant anything of yours 👍
Thanks for the really helpful video. One ask, as I will probably need every water source on the way :) What does the "be warned" the water sources up the Alp are at mains pressure mean? Slow flow?
Thanks for watching. Mains pressure is very high pressure so it will blow the bidon out of the hand as you turn it on!
@@CyclingInTheAlps Today I learned :) THX! Great Vid BTW!
The 1986 Worlds at the USAFA (Colorado) was no laughing matter. The base average elevation was at 6,700 feet to 7,000 feet - 2030M - 2,121m. Outside temperature that day was 46 F/7C, with winds at around 14mph/20kph The terrain was constantly up and down on gradient topping out at 13% This was, to date THE hardest course.
Thanks for your thoughts
Great snow!
It was!! Warm spell last few days. Hopefully colder tomorrow.
Have you read/watched any of the ZFC info on chain waxing...they recommend against using a KMC chain
No I haven’t. I tend to use shimano chains last 2 years. I’ll have a look.
Great video Mike, nice to see some warm weather!! Get them miles in lad!
Cheers Bill
Most choose Tenerife. Here's a look at Lanzarote! Drop any questions below. Cheers Mike
I did a good portion of this ride in July when I first came into Geneva in advance of riding a few Tour stages. Previewed your Passy and Joux Plane videos before doing those (thank you), but Saleve ended up being my favorite day of riding.
Good discovery. I think the Saleve is mainly used by locals. Thanks for watching.
Hey Mike I'm looking to build up a bike using this frame. How has the frame held up so far?
Hi Joe - all good with the frame - I've used it solidly the last 2 years and probably done 6000kms this year and 80,000M of climbing. The paintwork is starting to show its age a bit but I will use it through the Winter. I even thought about getting the disc version next. I recently put a TOKEN bottom bracket in it which is much nicer than the standard press fit bottom brackets. I had every intention of doing a follow up video but life got in the way!
@@CyclingInTheAlps Awesome! Thanks for the quick response Mike. I'm going to pull the trigger and order the frame. Going to put Spynergy Z-Lites wheels on them with my 46/30 chainrings Durianrider style
A couple you could add in Switzerland: Nova Eroica (Gravel) 15/6 - Sion, so probably train from Geneva and Tour des Stations 31/08, also train from Geneva.
Yes good point - it wasn't an exhaustive list but I can highly recommend the Tour des Stations. That was an amazing event this year czcams.com/video/M-gjtVlv1yc/video.html
Whats your 2024 cycling event plans? Drop any questions below cheers Mike
Love the videos, great info on what's on around Geneva. What kind of support/facilities are typically in place on the events - is it water/feed stations along the way? Is there usually a time cut off?
Thanks for watching. Every event tends to detail where the feed stations will be on the map of the various routes. Usually the event HQ will provide a meal post event with the prize presentations etc. Most events are well signposted and well marshalled with motorbike outriders. There will be a cut off but they are usually pretty generous. You will need a medical certificate for most events or a UCI compliant racing license with the appropriate form for overseas events.
Looks a great route!
Epic! Not sure why I haven't done it before.
I must do that cable car, I see it so often when travelling to and from Geneva, stunning views ! Thanks for sharing Mike, looked tough!
Not sure why I haven't done this ride before. Quiet roads, stunning scenery and a challenging day out! Drop any questions below. Cheers Mike 🚴🚴
I did the Superfondo. I agree, it's a very well arranged event. Next year they've moved it almost a full month to August 31, hopefully its not colder there. It was a bit chilly this year.
Thanks for watching. This years was unseasonable cold. The type of weather we had for the beginning of August was more akin to September. Thats for the note of the date change.
Great vid Mike...I'm debating the dreaded e-vtt at the moment...
Thanks - A lot iof locals here are buying EVTTs to access the downhill once the lifts shut. I'm still happy pedalling uphill at the moment
Nice video❤
Thanks for watching
