My essential pack item is a pair of snips for when Jonny cable ties him timing chip through his wheel spokes.

@@MontBlancGuides Very funny!! I thought it would have been anti-cramp tablets so you wouldn't be wrapped around a lampost trying to release it on the final climb of the Etape du Tour a la 2012!!

I always tell people about the gear hanger, I carry one for my specific frame in my saddle bag so I always have it with me, I’ve been away with a few people who have broken one and struggled to find a replacement

People will listen to you Adrian!! We'd have people turn up with a track pump in their case but no spare hanger! Hope all well.

Love to get out skiing Instead of the turbo atm (have to wait until March & a long awaited trip to 3 Valleys) Turbo definitely is effective though as Etape Training so far has seen improvement in w/kg from 2.34w/kg (210w/89.5kg) in August to 3.2w/kg (245w/76.5kg) now. Aiming for 70kg & FTP of 280w so 4w/kg by the time I spin out of Annemasse in July - lots more vile turbo sessions will be needed for that unfortunately. Definitely prefer skiing
Great vid again - good point about the hangar as I've decided to bring my bike away with me for the first time for the event ( I plan to ride to power for pacing especially the first half so I've opted against hiring)
Any other tips for novices bringing bikes for first time for such an event ???
I've booked with Sports Tours International so should have access to mechanical assistance as part of their package

Wow Noel thats some progression. Do you have a coach?
I'm going to do an Etape Q & A's in the New Year. Possibly 20.00 French Time 3rd January. You can join me live with any questions or drop them in the comments before hand.

@@CyclingInTheAlps I have employed a coach yes & I'll be honest there is no way I'd have managed it without his help - he specifically works with cyclists over the age of 40 only - so the nutrition and training is geared to the needs of the more "vintage" athletes amongst us. Lots of focus on building strength and maintaining lean muscle mass as well as the on the bike stuff.
Having someone holding you accountable (who has also probably heard every excuse in the book) definitely makes you train more consistently- the amount of times I've found myself on a turbo at 9.30 on a Friday night rather than being on the sofa having a beer & crisps is testimony to that.
I'll keep an eye out for the Q&A session
