Shinmax - makes all entry level Woodworking Bench Jointers Craftsman Delta Grizzly Jet All of Them!
I did a bunch of digging to figure out how to fix my jointer. This video is a quick walk through of what I uncovered in the process. I was surprised to learn the history of this machine and its diversity.

How to fix a Variable Speed Jointer Universal Motor Controller board Craftsman Delta or Porter Cable
zhlédnutí 3,8KPřed 3 lety
This covers how to determine if the U2010B chip is bad and how to replace it with a socket to fix your machine. This will work on a Delta 37-070, Delta JT160, Porter Cable PC160JT, or Craftsman CMEW020. The part number for the board is 1345927. All of these machines are identical and made by Shinmax Industry Co., LTD from 1993 to present at the time of recording (2021).

    Thankyou for the clear vid and how to do. I thought u did a great job without saying a word, was very clear to me anyway. So i collected lots of diff p supplies and had a go - i got 2 out of about 6 working. Also i found most didnt have just a simple divider to the TL. They were 2 resistors parallel and one series, combos like that. No matter which values or what combinations i removed and replaced with equiv value VR, i could never even adjust the output by more than a volt. However, with the couple i did get to work, like he stressed in the comments, the output voltage was unstable. Like, REALLY unstable the further down it goes from its designed voltage. I found once it got down near even half, it fluctuated up and down on my multimeter without even pausing, and that was without any load, ie, the output wasnt connected to anything at all, just multimeter measuring it. So i concluded, the ones i tried anyway, and with my very limited knowledge and skill, that doing this was not going to result in a new home made adjustable voltage power supply. Not something actually useful and reliable anyway, just limited use in its upper range. Near to what it was designed for. It was fun tho, and now im much more familiar with the little opto feedback to tl voltage ref section of these supplies. The supply that i had many of and thought would be the most useful when modded, i couldnt do at all. 24v, 10A, brand new boxed still, tl491, had as upper and lower resistive dividers something huge, like megohm or something, and the other so small my meter couldnt see it, like 1R or sub ohm, i cant really remember. I tried anyway, with closest VR's / pots i had, but no luck.

    Very informative, appreciate the time and effort to make this video. However, for anyone who isn't electrical board savvy (like me) and doesn't really use the variable speed option (like me) and simply wants a running jointer again (like me)... there's a much simpler solution... bypass the board completely by hardwiring the power switch to the motor. It sounds complex, but all it requires is connecting the 2 white wires from the board, and capping the black wire. Done. Single (full) speed jointer back in business.

    • @phillipnewman9174
      @phillipnewman9174 Před rokem

      @@jorgeneo560 Hi. It depends on whether your Ammeter was over reading or under reading. If the provided trim potentiometer is not able to adjust the readout to within an acceptable value then you may have to change the operational amplifier gain. I left the 8K2 resistors as is and replaced the feedback resistors with either a greater value resistor if the meter was under reading, thereby increasing the gain, or a lessor value resistor if it was over reading, thereby reducing the gain. First center the trim potentiometer so as to leave some adjustment room. Calculate the gain of the op-amp from the resistors used in the circuit. Google non-inverting op-amp. Then calculate your erroneous op-amp gain. Calculate the factor by which the reading needs to be reduced. Then calculate the correct gain to get the reading within the potentiometer’s range. Use the non-inverting op-amp formula to calculate the feedback resistance required. Replace the feedback resistor with the correct value, then use the trim pot to adjust the readout properly. Alternatively you can try different feedback resistor values by trial and error. I hope this helps someone.

    So these little lovelies are great... Thanks so much for doing this!! Can you post the schematics here? Did you have a go at getting the code out and reverse assembling it? Or is the security fuse blown? Let's face it the Chinese can't be beat for value for money ... but we could make some changes... Like removing the amps input port and hooking an Agilent ACS758LCB hall current sensor (remote with balanced pair drop cable?) straight to the port that reads amps, so that "amps out" from the ACS758 displays properly on the panel meter. And an output on the I2C? so that it can go into something else... like a CAN bus appliance? I asked the manufacturers if they could do custom versions if I provided the code and their straightforward answer was "how many?"

    • @subedei1
      @subedei1 Před 2 lety

      I believe he installed a compatible socket that way if the new chip eventually goes bad again, you can just unplug and plug a new one in, instead of having to un-solder and solder a new chip, again. Adding the socket (which is not original) is just a time saver if you have to do this procedure a second time.

      @@rayscrafield2106 I'm not sure is was explained like that in the video, but I was looking directly at the board from my own jointer at the time, so I saw the original chip is soldered direct to the board. I you go to the trouble of unsoldering the chip for replacement, adding a socket would be beneficial for future repair. I however think I will probably just bypass the board in mine. I figure if I use it so much I wear out the brushes faster as mentioned, I probably should get a better jointer anyway, lol. Good luck!!

    Can the switch be connected directly with the motor?

    • @UpcycleElectronics
      @UpcycleElectronics Před 2 lety

      The board creates a significant impedance in the circuit. However, the motor is switched internally via carbon brushes which are basically low impedance resistors. They are actually quite long brushes. At best they might wear a little faster. At worst the motor windings could be undersized for the current without the controller's impedance and burn out. I think this is unlikely, but without a full published motor specification I can't say either way. I did try running it directly for a few seconds to test that my board was bad. It worked when wired directly. I can say, after swapping the chip with the first working replacement, I have not had any further issues and have used it for several projects.
