On almost all twisty puzzles it isn't possible to have a single piece twisted while the rest of the puzzle is solved. For example the Rubik's Cube can't have only a single edge or single corner twisted in place. In this video I try to provide some intuition for why that is true without diving into particularly complex mathematics or group theory or too many mathematical definitions and formalisms.

Here I'm trying to talk through the thought process I use to pick a very hard lock for the first time. Unfortunately the the core and pins on these locks are so aggressive that the feedback you get from them is quite confusing and obscured so my commentary isn't entirely precise. Note that I made a mistake when examining the key. I skipped pin 1 which is actually a higher cut than I was expecti...

I set pin #7 right before setting pin #5 and dropping into the deep false set. I didn't get enough feedback on #7 to comment on it setting or not but it was clear when I lifted #5 to drop into the false set that my previous effort on #7 worked. These are good locks!

Many locks with spool pins give you significant, unmistakable feedback in the form of counter-rotation and deep false sets. The Master 570 is a lock with spools that don't give you much feedback at all and the feedback you get from the lock is very subtle. This video shows how to understand the differences in feel and how to read the feedback to pick the lock anyways.

The solution is 300ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 200ml of 5% acetic acid (white vinegar) and several spoonfuls (50ml?) of non-iodized salt (kosher salt). The key is brass and the outer layers are being dissolved away which causes very slight thinning of the key. I don't need a thin key, this was just a test to prove that you could thin brass in this way.

The tool for changing parts that I left out of the video is the "layers" tool which looks like a stack of paper next to the camera icon. Once the layer selection panel is up it becomes easy to move between parts or merge layers (parts) into one layer.

    Thank you so much for these 4 videos, i had one of these locks laying around for around like 6 years and I remember throwing away the code thinking "I wont forget". Well one day i opened it and never touched it again for 6 years, there's been many times where i could really use a lock and i thought of the one i had but i had no idea what the combination was so i just toughed it out, now that i plan on needing a lock i decided to try and get the combination, at first i tried to see if i could just change the code since it was unlocked but i realized that wasn't possible so i locked it and went youtube, all of the videos made absolutely no sense, it was the same concept but just complete gibberish, but with your videos and actually logical explanations its made the process so much easier to follow and guess what I FOUND IT, i was honestly very surprised to find it because a part of me was sceptical but I'm really glad i found it again and saved me some money. Thank you for your explanations, ill really appreciate it.

    • @bmenrigh
      @bmenrigh Před 9 měsíci

      I haven't played with that one. If you pull up firmly on the shackle can you keep turning the dial more than just a little bit? If you can there aren't any "false gates" and you may simply be able to pull up and turn around right and left while pulling up and get lucky. So turn the dial around three times clockwise, then pull up firmly on the shackle and keep turning clockwise until you feel the dial catch. Then all while pulling up start turning the dial counter-clockwise at least once around and then stop when you feel a catch. Finally turn back clockwise and the lock may pop open while you're pulling up. This technique works semi-reliably on combo locks that don't have false gates (which is why those false gates are put there in the first place).

    My first # was 28 +5 =33 I tried all the tricks watching other vids and couldnt get it to open. The second # that sticks or that I could feel with pressure was 20 . So I just subtracted 5 from 20 =15 and forced the last # and presto 33 15 30 So if anyone is having problems try it ...I have no idea why it worked but it did. Turning counter clockwise should cause you to find a number that sticks and wont move. That was my second # which I took away 5 digits . If this was all by chance that freaking weird 😂

    The multiple of 4 x difference between the first and last number didn't work on my Master Lock when I initially found the combo using Swynndla's method at czcams.com/video/hVYRIp9YOlo/video.html. The difference between the first and last numbers was 37, not a multiple of 4. Then I changed the first number so that the difference 36, a multiple of 4 and it worked also.

    There's a lot easier way to do that. Figure out the first number just like you said, spin the door one full rotation in the opposite rotation, when you get to the first number moderately pull on the shackle and then slowly turn the dial until the dial stops moving completely, and then again with moderate pressure on the shackle, turn it down the other direction until the shackle pops open... And yes I know this is the internet and that they will probably be a bunch of people who will want to argue with, but I am a licensed locksmith he's been doing this for over 10 years so I don't give a shit what you have to say so don't even worry about trying to argue.

    I finally found the combination on my old lock! this video series was, by far, the most helpful. It gives you a nice understanding of the reasoning behind the technique. I found this more helpful than just blindly following instructions without an understanding of the reason for it. Thank you so much, I spent several hours and was ready to give up. I had one of the smaller colored locks that are more difficult. the breakthrough for me came when I went to the store and purchased a similar lock for $7. Practicing the techniques in this video on a lock with a known combination was extremely helpful and ultimately lead to my success.
