What is Avant Garde? Marina Abramović, Marcel Duchamp, and more
Hi all, welcome to another research vlog! In this video we're exploring the Avant Garde - in this video we discuss Marcel Duchamp and his urinal; Marina Abromovic and the shocking 'Rhythm 0'. Grab a tea (and maybe a brandy, to be honest) and get cosy.

There's possibly a difference between ground-breaking in a messian way and just composing in an avant garde way.. But doesn't every avant garde piece do something different yo ghe norm?
Always people writing what you might term traditional music... Therefore isn't there then always some avant garde music as there always something traditional to break away from. Some genres like brass band anx concert band really don't like avant garde, so there's always possibilities
MA.... The audience split into two sides, one side wanted to protect her, the other, not so much.
Interesting video! Awakened many thoughts. The one with M. A. is quite an abstract exercise to think if the same thing would work today? I like how the execution / presentation of her pieces may seem quite simple (sits and stares at one audience memember) but the thought process, reasoning behind it and guts to do it. Anyway, interesting piece! 🙏
Messiaen himself said that europeen music is not rhythmic, he uses greek ancient rhyhtm which is like walking and indian music.
he only found Mozart and Debussy understood organic rhyhtm
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel that using music notation software can be limiting to my compositional creativity, in particular because the MIDI playback is unrealistically consistent and mechanical, and I think it can create a sort of unintended expectation that the live performers of one’s work must match that computer-consistency and exactitude.
I am confused. I see now a couple of videos, and i see three versions of the lowest range of contralto, e3, than c3 or d3, now f3. What is the right? I can hit easy hit e3 and f3, but to get d3 or c3 ist difficult for me. But i had a untrained voice. If i a true contralto, i cant say it. Perhaps with more experiences. But i want to know, what is right and what is wrong. :-)
Hi, thanks for your comment: there isn’t a right and a wrong. It’s very difficult to label human voices because humans don’t adhere to predefined invented concepts and definitions. Just find which suits your voice best. You can have contraltos with varying ranges but the key determining factor is the tessitura (what pitches render the voice’s optimum timbre).
Great Channel!
In the end...you just write whatever SHIT enters your brain!!!
Xenakis's system can of course be further generalized to include polygons with n vertices for example
Alannah these are great tips thank you! Prepping a scene in class now and have not given acting drunk any though whatsoever. Also need to go watch Withnail and I, clips from it look great.
Thanks! I'm a jazz musician and I have a history exam coming on contemporary classical composers such as Messaien. Being clueless on the matter, this was really helpful to get an idea of the man's techniques. Thank you :)
Best of luck for your exam!
my voice type is like Mariah Carey male hitting high notes and whistle notes
all male soprano (sopranist) can sing really high in female soprano (A5 or above) in modal voice r actually leggero tenors because they keep their timber so bright (modal voice, more nasal, more headvoice, do not low thier larynx as other opera singer) the leggero and soprano have the same primo passagio is Eb4 and encourage singing in mix voice above the leggero also have the same agility and increase of cricothyroid like colortura soprano n the leggero always the most confuse voice type to classify
If my range was around C3 to B4 would that be this? Im not very educated in the music realm but want to know my voice type
Based on this pitch range then yes you should find contralto parts accessible. But also: it’s hard to determine a voice type based on range alone because you can extend your range with practice. It depends on where your voice resonates the best as well. For instance I can technically hit alto pitches but my voice resonates better in the soprano range. A bassoon can play really high pitches but its tessitura (where its timbre and resonance are optimum) is in the lower pitches (although that’s debatable as well but I’m digressing). Having said this, I think with training and practice a human voice can evolve in terms of timbre too, so nothing is set in stone.
Hello, me again. I haven't watched your video yet, but I was gonna ask if you knew anything about cultural appropriation and ragtime, whether there's anything in the literature about that? The reason I ask is because I am developing a style of MIDI player piano music in base 16 (16-EDO) with deliberately ridiculously fast syncopation and chromatic inflections, where there's a different sort of 'intoxicating' effect that comes about through a sense of the ecstatic. It feels very personal because I played ragtime as a child and this was how I learned to play the piano, including playing it too fast. I'm aware Scott Joplin specified that they should be played slowly to achieve a specific sort of effect with the syncopation.
Hiya, i need some advice please! In 2 weeks me and 2 people need to make a scene for a horror movie, and im meant to be acting scared hiding as the killer gets closer and closer. What would you say to do to make my emotions genuine and believable?😊😊
first video i see from you and damn its interesting! Thank you! I will try to use this method for some electronic stuff. synths don't have arms that cannot do some stuff. they can jump and do where and whatever. but this video is so inspiring! Thanks!
Very informative, thank you.

I'm a natural castrato. My larynx did not drop and I don't have an Adam's apple. I'm 41 years old and my height is 1,80 cm (5'11'') I chose a female gender identity (legally) because of being more accurate socially in these times. So, my name is Vera Arianna. Greetings!!!
Thank you for this. You are brilliant. Xenakis became my all-time hero one day in 1967 when I heard the opening bars of Metastaseis in a booth in HMV Oxford Street. I had to learn to listen all over again.
Thank you for your kind words. It’s lovely to hear how you discovered Xenakis.
I know one girl (Ekaterina Amelina) who was studied as lyric soprano at the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, but she has coloratura contralto voice: czcams.com/video/9YjSrGsoaD4/video.htmlsi=VTO_WzUSgNodLfIQ czcams.com/video/pySj_ZyPnsA/video.htmlsi=qSsbjSXK5A6TDwpy czcams.com/video/u-DNofpv_j8/video.htmlsi=gpAi5yRxdKhPAJHq
To my ears, Christina Aguilera, Alsou, Rihanna are lyric contralto. But each performer has her own unique timbre and style. czcams.com/video/yB6fcMrVogU/video.html czcams.com/video/BXhIT4MpRis/video.html czcams.com/video/wwCykGDEp7M/video.html
I could be wrong, but in my opinion Rihanna is a lyrical contralto. She has a G#4 head sound. She just using nasal voice. She didn't bother to sound like Cher's voice. She came up with her own sound production in vocals. Therefore, those who are involved in pop music should experiment with their sound. czcams.com/video/0NZ6A-X6taA/video.html
Coloratura contralto is sometimes confused with lyric soprano. Here is an example of a coloratura contralto - Polina Gargarina. She is often called a lyric soprano, but she is a contralto. czcams.com/video/0TW9P5cpdGI/video.html
Love it!
I was trying...really trying...to get into this video, but I couldn't take all the interruptions with the speeded-up Rubik's cube. If they were half the length, they wouldn't have intruded so much into the rhythm of the verbal material.
Thanks for watching. OK noted, thank you.
I found this to be a very amusing piece. I mean that as a compliment, by the way. Another thing you could try out is interchanging the rows and columns.
Thanks! 🙏
I see more possibilities :) Spiraling from the inside out, or applying some equivalents to music operations (transposition, inversion, ...) on the letters, like "transposition" where you replace each letter by a letter N positions further, or doing something with the lines you get if you connect the letters alphabetically. Fun stuff!
Really neat idea! Reminds me of Ben Nebuto's Emily Likes the TV. I'll have to explore this idea myself.
Just founded your channel by accident and I'm so damn happy about it. Great work on spreading the knowledge of classical music. Thanks.
There are several reasons why contraltos are so rare. The primary reasons are 1) they aren't "diagnosed" correctly (they are often misidentified as a soprano or a mezzo as few teachers have worked with/learned how to identify contraltos), 2) they are aged out/priced out of the industry as their voices develop more slowly, so they aren't given the financial support, opportunities, etc. they need at the beginning of their careers.
it is not Zenakis, but Ksenakis, soft k like the x in Huxley
Interesting to see how you work. Trial and error is an underrated composition method!
I believe that when I get drunk, I usually start breathing slowly and heavily while smiling a lot to myself. I also start acting "sophisticated", like making extra slow movements and looking super-proud of myself.
I'm a mezzo countertenor , a very powerful one, i can reach g5 easily and well i have control of My voice until Bb#5 and i never was to voice classes in My life(i'm 29) SO i can reach those high notes naturally, without vocal training, maybe i Will be a sopranist in some years. I started singing classes 2 weeks ago
I can touch c6 but well, i don't like to do that cuz it's too much effort for My vocal cords 😢
I really enjoyed this video! You had me laughing a a few times. It's pretty crazy how far people were willing to go to protect all types of traditions. It's also blindingly ironic that some man / group of men sometime somewhere decided that this was the only way to bring a womanly voice into a performance. How can ANYBODY say that us men are more intelligent than women??? sorry, but😂🤣 UNLESS, this was a clever woman trying to think of the best way to troll the pompous jerks. "just cut off your balls, that way your voice never changes and you'll ALWAYS sound better than us!"
There's a constant back-and-forth in fandom for the a capella group Pentatonix about whether Mitch Grassi is an actual countertenor. Check out Mitch covering Billie Eilish' song "Your Power" here. I'm interested in what your judgement is about his voice type. Many have said that this is just his head voice - no falsetto. czcams.com/video/0mSMqkBArxk/video.html
Just subscribed to Ur channel
Ur so pretty :D
3:12 that strange quiet calm direct attempt drunk people make. Far to deliberate as you say.
Not supriced.
Love the sound of that plucked piano.
You know what, I actually feel really inspired by your channel. The video you made a long time ago about canon is one that I repeatedly come back to as a reference. I love talking about technique and I'm thinking it might be an idea to record some of my own videos, documenting my own process. Can you imagine how cool it would be to have a little CZcams community of composers doing our thing and discussing and sharing techniques and ideas?
Thank you @CameronWattMusic for your kind words. Yes it’d be good to get a community of creatives !
The 'crazy pace' bit has got to be my favourite. Either that or the moments with the static.
Ah! I remember this piece! I really like this one. I think you should be a little bit kinder to yourself, a lot of the time you seem to be quite harsh in your criticisms of the piece. And I get that; there is a place for post-hoc analysis and that's usually how I analyse pieces I've written - write the piece first and then reflect on how I felt about it, maybe considering what I might do differently the next time. If your criticisms feed into a positive process then I won't stop you. Just a reminder not to be too hard on yourself. (I hope that doesn't come across as super patronising and if it does then sorry!) One thing I recommend trying is writing haikus and then writing miniatures inspired by the haiku. It's a useful exercise which I find really helpful.
Thank you! You make a good point, we sometimes forget to mention the positives in our own work. A balanced view is best.
I sometimes incorporate poetry into my electroacoustic compositions. I have just finished one called Luftmusik: Winds of Change, which centres around the idea of being more than my pain and has poetry based on that idea. Gonna upload it soon.
Brilliant! I’ll look out for this!
Like this :)
Since a young age I loved singing. When I was in middle school I joined singing classes but my teacher put me in the male section and she said my voice was like a man's one (and never gave me the opportunity to sing) and that made me feel sad and made me self-conscious. Years later I was called a contralto and everything made sense.
