A rigid framework like a magic square is much more creatively inspiring than a blank page. I've enjoyed following your composing process.
I generally feel that if someone says "composition comes from the heart", like, yeah it's a nice sentiment but what about making something work musically? Or making it not work? That's the whole point of having a creative process, is that we get to decide these types of things. If someone says "real composition", we get into discussions of what even is "real music", which people tend to use as a way of discarding valuable work that doesn't fit into their preconceived boxes.

Wonderful video, as a student of composition i find myself to want to explore more and my teacher support me in that, but some people are really disrespectful to composers and their attempts and successes, that are not "hummable". This give me always a bad aftertaste in any of my attempts.
I have a whole playlist of compositions that are based on 12-tone rows but do not sound atonal or alienating (even though the rows are generated completely randomly using some computer code). Like you said, it's what you do with the material that determines the outcome.
I have a joke for you. It is a joke that has a title.
The Conservative Has A Very Sad Face
An avant-garde artist and a confused social conservative walk into a bar. The conservative says, âLook at me, Iâm bellyaching about this!â The artist says, âWhat are you bellyaching about?â The conservative has a very sad face. He has no reason to believe that the music of the avant-garde artist doesnât come from the heart. But he chooses to believe that anyway. The artist then asks the question, âDo you want to know the meaning of the Mona Lisa smile?â The conservative says, âMeaning? We have to be careful here.â The artist throws a pint of lager over the conservativeâs face. As the beer drips down his face, he says âDo something that comes from the heart.â
