Composing music, really

  • Hi all, in this video, I do some composing. It's not suave. I’m carrying on from the last composing video where I used a Magic Square as a starting point (to many people’s chagrin for some reason).
Things that are discussed in this video are: retrograde, imitation, palindromes, trills, dynamics and orchestration, and not knowing what to do next.

Unfortunately my magic hexagon project turned out not to work - I ended up finding another way of pursuing the creative process.
Evelyn Glennie's writings on gender and music are really interesting. She talks about how music is often seen as an engine of dance in a gendered way, e.g. the men make the music and the women dance to it - but what about inverting the relation and seeing dance as an engine of the music? For me this led to an interesting creative practice where I literally just filmed my own physical dance in a practice room and used it as the genesis of the musical ideas, e.g. my own physical movements as inspiration.
Much as I'm not a pro dancer I really enjoyed doing that and it was useful for me to break down creative restrictions and gender barriers and try something new. So often we think of composition as being a purely cerebral activity - so it kind of helped me to subvert that notion. I also completely respect if you want to go down the somewhat cerebral route, and there are a lot of musical adventures to be had there - women are often discouraged from thinking in this way, so all power to you for doing this stuff.
I really enjoy your channel and hope to see more from you.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel that using music notation software can be limiting to my compositional creativity, in particular because the MIDI playback is unrealistically consistent and mechanical, and I think it can create a sort of unintended expectation that the live performers of one’s work must match that computer-consistency and exactitude.

I really love these videos, seeing contemporary composition techniques in practice is super helpful for someone trying to learn this on their own!
