No such thing, it's been dead! The American Dream is to leave this messed up money and Chaotic selfishness as well as power-mongering and political warfare. I know a lot of folks who are dying to leave the USA! I am trying to relinquish my American citizenship as soon as I get Canadian Citizenship or elsewhere! I have lots of friends who are struggling and have death threats and, mind you, most of them are Jewish etc. People here keep mentioning people starving in Third World countries while forgetting we are owing $42.35 Trillion+ in National Debt as well as unemployment in extreme poverty and homelessness problems, and it will continue to increase. Some of my buddies have dual citizenship and they've thought about relinquishing their American Citizenship status but all of them got denied. Another country that does deadlocking their citizens is Eritrea and those guys are Refugees just like the Americans who were unsuccessfully removed from their citizenship status. I agree with most folks I've met: America has become Chaotic, not just California, Illinois and New York. All 50 states in general have given me anxiety and negative perspective upon my struggling poor life. We are in a ton of trouble and both sides of the spectrum just lose their minds. Most folks I knew had to pay double taxation from both America and the other nation's citizenship they retained! Even if this leader gets re-elected, or the Orange Fascist fat bastard I still will lose hope and still want to move out of America asap. Most arrogant racist folks kept mentioning "Snow Mexicans" to my friends because they are Canadians or have canadian citizenships. Don't these assholes forget one thing? We're Political Canadians Illegals who are driving the PM into a more deep chaotic mess than it was before the electoral college? I don't care about both sides of the American Leadership spectrum, I want out like most folks and is willing to lose my leg and limbs for this matter! Same shitty leaders different Parties, I just want to move somewhere I can call home. Yeah, there’s Racism and Gangs but not as severe as America for obvious reasons. Everything I tried; I can’t even get a fucking job! If my abusive parents died, someday I would leave America Immediately and probably forever! I won’t get any inheritance either. Also, I would be happier either heading towards New Zealand or Japan.

Retirement means different things for different people, I plan on retiring next year at 62, but I still plan on working a part-time job, not the corporate job I currently work, plus I have a side business I plan on expanding on. Just have to watch how much I make.

We've been here for years. I love it. My wife, who was born and raised here, would rather be in the US again. So I told her okay, you go I'll stay. We already had a house and picked up a lot of expat friends. Great place to be.

There is also a group that thinks that in Europe everything is the same as in the US, including the laws. Last week some asked me what my credit score is and what credit score he needs to have in order to get a loan. I had to explain we don't have a credit score. They look at your income and past and current debt. My advise, prepare. Inform yourself. Read a lot about the country you want to locate to. The culture, cost of living, laws, food, the chamber of commerce if you want to start a business etc etc

I'm an American living permanently in Portugal. There are trade-offs, there is no doubt. Our house east of Coimbra would cost 10 times more in Lisbon or the Algarve, the two most popular places for retired expats. Costs differ wildly outside of those places. Americans are fickle, the attention span of a puppy sometimes. I know this. Americans love the new "it" place for about 10 minutes and then another shiny thing catches their eye.

My hometown of Lisbon is my favourite place in the world. Lisbon has almost everything. Sports, concerts/festivals, beach a short drive away, huge malls, summer holy parties in the city, etc etc etc.

The reason I can't move to the Philippines is because what kind of monthly income do I receive? I'm not retired yet,I'm not 62 yet and can't get my Social security money, and to work in the Philippines you need to be younger with other requirements to work there, if you don't have any income monthly in the Philippines you will be homeless.

How does anyone get the courage to move to a country with a different culture, different language, different social norms, and social institutions that run totally different from what we are used to. Heck, I tried moving to West Virginia from Brooklyn and I swear I thought I was in another country even though West by God Virginia is in the Union.

You can’t just move to a country because you decide to, you need to have a job & for most countries the position has to be filled by a native first you have to apply for a visa or have lots of money - I married my husband and became a French citizen after about 10 yrs and now I have my European French passport and I can live anywhere in the European Union - don’t need a visa 😊😊❤️

If you think the costs are outrageous, consider that the average Portuguese earns about minimum wage (currently somewhere between 600 and 700 euros, most jobs pay around 800 to 900 euro's). Prices are based on wealthy tourists, including things like super markets. As an expat myself I consider myself lucky I have no rent to pay and earn well above minimum wage, and most months are still a struggle. Unless you have a successful business or at the very least no expenses for housing, Portugal is absolutely terrible to live.
