Watch This Before Changing Your Pickups
I've been trying to figure out how to measure and quantify pickup output and I've come to the conclusion that the potentiometers and tone capacitor has at least as much to do with guitar tone as the pickups themselves.
In fact, I've got a feeling a LOT of people have changed pickups to something that probably wasn't that different than what was in there. It's not that pickups don't matter, they definitely do...but the REST of the electronics matter too and can often be changed for a lot less $$ than new pickups.

Taking a look at my 1999 FSR MIM Ash Stratocaster. I didn’t know the following about Fender’s Mexico Operation: “In the 1990s, Fender enlisted the help of Fujigen, the firm that made Fender’s guitars in Japan, and the two companies formed a joint venture to develop a guitar the manufacturing facility at Ensenada. People were brought in from Japan to train workers at the new Mexican guitar facto...

Do You Really Need A Classical Guitar? Check Out The Yamaha C40ii!
Nice video Mr Morris! Thank you
Thank you for watching!
need? of course not, but i plan on getting one. probably this exact model
They're really nice guitars. I'd love to know what you eventually get and how you like it.
MIM Have gotten much better, it’s probably just because the process as a whole has gotten better
I think you may be right
Do you like the Texas Toast Icons ? .. shame you can't hear them. I'd like to have heard the Godin acoustically. Cheers!
The TT Icon looks nice and is what inspired me to get this one. The first few strums I did from 15:40 to 16:00 were acoustic only picked up from my camera mic. Not much but there is some there.
Spoiler: the answer to the title is "yes. Very yes." This reminds me a lot of my Epiphone Zephyr Regent, but that is all-mahogany and has a terrifically voiced humbucker in the neck and an ebony bridge which I'm convinced impacts the tone quite a bit. Jazz boxes just make sense on a pragmatic level as they're both beautifully-voiced and immune to acoustic bridge-lift. Honestly you've got me excited to play that guitar more.
I had no rational way to justify buying this guitar...until I got it in my hands. Then I didn't need logic because I had love.
I have collected fenders for 45 years- have had or have from all countries of origin. By build quality-not quality of appointments- I would put Japanese and american tied for first and would put china and mexico followed by Indonesia in that order. A squire jaguar is pretty much equal to the vintera in build quality-and the added expense of the mexican is not reflected in electronics or other appointments.
I've got one American Strat and there are defiantly some aspects of the guitar I prefer. I also suspect the electronics/pickups are higher quality and consistency than some of the import counterparts.
I have 2 MIM a 2000 HSS and a 2007 all single coils, had them set-up for my string gauge i use and lemme tell you they stay in tune and play great and sound fantastic. I also had 3 way switches put in, I'll put them against any strat including the original 59 I have gifted to me after my father in law passed, tho the neck on that one is like butter in your hands.
I was really impressed that I hadn't played this guitar in a year and it was still perfectly in tune!
@@olddogguitars23 great quality for the price, I put them through their paces during shows and I rarely have to tune I love'em! Great vid btw.
I’ve had mine for a month, I love it, it is very well made.
I think they're beautiful but there's also just something super cool about them.
I'm really really liking the arm carve and belly cut. I wish my Fender Tele had those. There were some of the Japanese Fenders that had both but discontinued and way out of my price range anyway. Cool vid with lots of very useful info. Thanks and keep them coming!
I know the tele purists like the block bodies but I'd love a fender with a contoured body.
mmm no,though the mim fenders have been drastically improved 2000 onwards, best mim fenders were the classic player series,i own a 2007 mim classic player 60s strat, custom shop designed, good hardware etc which is the only mim fender ive owned that comes clost to my made in japan/crafted in japan reissues, though its better than my old mij squier and old mij standard, but the mij standard and mij squier were leaps and bounds above the mim 90s models, but then at the time the cp was the top tier mim,i also owned/own 2 more recent player series teles, sold one, solid workhorse/gig worthy guitars, but they dont play as well as my fender japan 62 or tokai mij tele,or have as much mojo, plus fenders are still made in japan, the current mij heritage series can compete easily with anything fender usa.the player series werent introduced until 2018,way off.mim fender are confusing, you had the classic player series 96 to 2018 replaced by the not as good vintera series, the classic series, which sat just below the classic player and were more trad spec, then the player series which replaced the old mim standard 2018 to present
Something about Japanese quality that other's can't seem to completely match. I remember working in machine shops in the 90's and we were always trying to implement quality control methods that seem to have been perfected in Japan.
Why is the cable jack in backwards?
I usually have a tele plugged in here and use the right angle end of my cable. I just didn’t bother switching it around for the Strat.
Hi there, Thank you for your video. I'm joining a band that plays Stax music and mowtown music with rhythmic chops. Do you think this guitar could work? Thank you
I initially commented with a different reply because I thought this was on a different video. Yamaha are 100% gigable guitars. I think humbuckers are the safest bet for live performances because you never know what kind of environment you’re going to be playing in. as I said in the other comment, the reality is with an EQ pedal you can get nearly any tone you’re looking for from nearly any guitar. It’s just a matter of finding something you connect with.
its funny because i was thinking that about the new vintera 2 line.
I’ve looked at some of the vintera necks recently because they seem to have more of the vintage specs I prefer. I haven’t tried any of them but I’d like to.
Cool video, it's hard to find archtop reviews so thank you. Pretty sure we're kindred spirits, I just like to noodle around on a guitar &:just generally enjoy them.
Thanks for watching!
Cool!
Thanks!
Dave - I just stumbled across your video as I am in the market for an arch top. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to create this video. It’s excellent. I also wanted to share that I think you’re an excellent player. We will all run into the worst of the worst on the internet, but I appreciate that you love playing for yourself purely for the love of music. Embrace it and keep on playing!
You're too kind but thank you
Squiers have thinner bodies as well, so it's hard to put regular Fender parts on it, like a bridge or pickups etc.
The trem block on this squier is definitely different and I know the fender American string spacing and nut width are slightly different. I’ve not had an issue with pickups but the majority of parts are certainly not directly interchangeable and I’m sure that’s intentional.
I was off on the price in the video. Apparently they’re $799 on Sweetwater but they have a demo available for $599. You can also find a variety of prices in that range on Reverb.
#33_June23_2024_ZSoundzLikeYouWonOnThisOne_😇🇺🇸
Did you consider the Tom Bukovac bridge
Man, I'm afraid that would cost as much as the Guitar!
Jack Pearson plays squier almost exclusively. I am teaching my son about this. You can mod a squier with great frets and a straight neck to be a phenomenal guitar. Great discussion here. I have had a squier classic vibe and I tend to be a PRS core and Private stock guy. It was an excellent guitar. We Just got him a Players Strat and we are modding to the Vega Trem and adding pickups. I think that guitar is great. He has a good "picker". Like Father like son fortunately.
I’d love to try a Vega trem.
I took a fender Starcaster strat and did the David Gilmour thing to it. It sounded and played incredibly good.
That’s cool. I think almost any guitar can be made to sound good in the right hands.
Lots of good technical guitar info. Thanks so much
Thank you!
"REW" (Room EQ Wizard) is a free and extremely versatile loudspeaker measurement program - I think you could use its sine sweep to get good graphs with your pickup in place of a mic. REW can also measure impedance if you build an impedance jig which only has one resistor for parts.. Its cool you "do" pickups. IJ only wound one about 52 years ago - perhaps #26 wire on an alnico bar magnet - DC was close to600 ohms IIRC -Ii used a tiny mic matching transformer to steup up voltage and it sounded very good - very hi-fi with extended treble- more so than a stock Fender P-bass pickup - probably too sterile for guitar use. The bobbin was in bad shape with soldering iron melted areas so did not mount it..
That sounds super cool, I’ll check it out. I’ve been using a USB oscilloscope for a few weeks and am getting much more accurate measurements. I’ll post a video of my findings soon!
I have the same guitar. I love mine. I noticed you said it probably has a plastic nut. It's actually a synthetic bone nut. Nice review
Thanks for the clarification. Whatever it’s made of, it’s cut well and works great?
somethings wrong when you don't have a dog hair in your supper
It seems to get everywhere!
Is that an aftermarket bridge on the green guitar?
Yes it’s a Wilkinson 6 saddle. The 6 barrels to allow for better intonation but I think I still prefer the three barrel style with compensated barrels.
sweet!
Thanks!
That’s a sweet Squire. I own a 1984 black Japanese Squire that I bought by mistake thinking it was a Fender version when I was starting out in the early 2000’s for $200 bucks off EBay. Had EMG Steve Lukather box set added as a mod. Freaking love this guitar over my other Fender Strats. Plays and feels incredible. Keep the vids coming🤘
I've heard great things about the MIJ guitars
I forgot to say I have the 60s vibe strat and it’s great, well worth the £399. I paid for it to start my collection off just under 3 years ago and I suck too but it’s fun.
They definitely stepped up their game on the classic vibe series
Just to answer your question on where they make these now, they did go back to Indonesia. That’s where my strat and Tele Deluxe were made both made around 2021. Love the videos and your strat.
I think this one was made in 2019 - I've got a sunburst CV that was made in China but I don't know when.
@@olddogguitars23 that would be right as far as I can find out. They were made in China for a long time and sometime after 2020 they were coming from Indonesia by the time I got one in 2021.
Thanks for the demo, was that Beatles? Blackbird? Good song BTW.
Yeah kind of a butchered version of it.
I've been thinking about getting one of these. Kind of kicking myself for not getting one when they had the $30 off coupon. I agree with you on the bridge, I would probably swap it out as well.
Just got one in yesterday, but I’ll probably wait until the strings need to be changed to swap it out. It’s really a pretty cool guitar imo
go to reverb and like a few, dealer might shoot you a good offer. That's how I recently got my B7 for a my LP.
Great idea. Thank you!
Never heard about this. Nice video and very interesting.
I’m still trying to learn about it, but it seems interesting to me.
Thats so cool!!! Do you have a wiring diagram or anything to construct it please? Thank you, very impressed!!
Ah sorry I see it very easy wiring. Ty
Yeah the wiring is very straightforward and the controller is labeled pretty clearly. It’s still working like a champ btw. Just got a new batch of flatwork for tele pickups!
Thank you. Once all the parts came it all made sense. Looking forward to making it. I wondered if you could get bulk loads of flatwork anywhere!
@@andye300 I’ve had good luck with pickupwinders.com - tone Kraft has a decent selection and prices but they are painfully slow shipping.
I've got the exact same guitar in the same Claret Burst livery Dan. Yours appears a brighter/lighter red top than mine in this vid, guessing possibly because of lighting? MIK pickups are medium output, 7.2k/8.3kOhm respectively.
Yeah, it’s probably the light. There are four 5000K LEDs in this room so it’s not really natural lighting but works well with my old eyes
honestly love that bright tight sound
I’ve been adjusting pick up heights for the last couple of days on this one trying to get them balanced out. That bridge is pretty harsh and the P90 is pretty loud in comparison. I really want them to sound good in the middle position which is what I’m going for.
I imagined this song as being played on a strat
I’m sure it originally was. But any guitar with a trem (vibrato) bridge can be used.
Turn of you fluorescent lighting or overhead lighting., and make sure your running into a grounded plug.
Most of the noise was coming from the AC unit right outside the window. There’s a noticeable difference when it’s running!
The Trembucket is an F spaced pickup. Too wide for a Gibson guitar.
Good point, although I think it’s only about 8-1/2 thousands wider and fits pretty well with modern Gibson bridge string spacing.
the strap buttons are too shiny....
I never noticed until you said something!!
Clarification it was a Blues Deluxe Reverb 40 watt 112 converted to a 40 watt 112 basement all the boards were ripped out it's all tubes fantastic
That sounds like a cool conversion!
Dan great video I always wanted a blues Junior so I'll do it the way you did yours but I got to tell you about my amp I got a deluxe Reverb that was converted to a basement 11240 watt it's got a half power switch and maybe a switch it's fantastic I want to do what you did to the blues Junior so I'm going to buy one and do it and make sure I remember the clip the resistor Take Care thank
Seems to be a great little amplifier. There are dozens of videos on people repairing problems and I thought I might try to avoid some of those problems with this mod.
My favorite pickups. Bring the noise.
I’ve definitely learned to love them!
@@olddogguitars23 They can growl but they retain their character when you roll the volume down on the guitar. No other pickup does that quite like a p90.
I get mad when people throw these away give them to people who can fix them
It was really fun to get working again. Glad I rescued it from the trash!
I love these old record players
Dan-you uploaded unreal upload.
You made a fine piece of equipment.
Thank you. I considering buying one now that I’ve had some success winding pickups but this one honestly seems to do everything I need.
When you did the sound comparison i found your strat the most pleasing to my ears, whstever that means.
I’ve think I prefer mine as well but that may just be a bias lol
