i love how the dog was looking at the f15s
You are a smart, experienced climbing genius. Thank you 😊
You mention if one cuts the other cuts - this feels like an argument against equalization in this specific case. An unequalized anchor would likely see the loaded strand sever, giving warning of the impending danger
I know you love the gigajul, have you ever tried the CT Alpine Up? Looks pretty tempting right now and apparently more efficient than the gigajul, and feels like a grigri while on rappel or belaying from what I've heard. What did you think about it if you tried it, and if you didn't, any reason why not? Would you give it a go? ^^ I really want to try it. Best thing for me compare to a grigri, or the new pinch, is having guide mode and two ropes options...
@@RoamingMustang it’s ok, pretty big and chunky though, to the point it would put me off carrying it multi pitching.
@@JBMountainSkills Hum I see, I need to find a way to get it into my hands and have a look. Thanks for the feedback!
I dont understand why they would make it so simmilar to a Grigri, i can easily imagine someone using this thinking it will automatically catch a fall..

I really like a purcell as i find it the easiest of the personal tethers to extend while weighted. This makes it easier and safer to weight and test my systems when cleaning/rappelling which is nice. I also like that its a fair bit cheaoer 😊
I've also found Jetboils pretty useless for simmering - the flame goes out if set too low. However, I've found them great for doing a stir fry - ideal in fact as stir frying should be done at high temperatures. Buying a packet of stir fry veg, a cured meat - panchetta is great for this, a packet of noodles and a bottle of stir fry sauce (e.g. sweet Thai chilli). I take along with me a bottle of spray cooking oil and using a mess tin over the Jetboil flame. Adding the meat to the hot oil, shortly afterwards adding the veg, noodles and a good splurge of the sauce and within minutes will have a very tasty, nutritious and filling meal. Typically the portions sold by the food outlets are for two people so I keep by half of each for the following night - I've found they all keep even in hot weather plus it's not weighty to carry around in your backpack. Great vids by the way, keep them coming 👍
Loo roll anchor wasn't redundant
Thanks! I'd forgotten and was trying to look back up Super helpful 💜
As a NEOX owner, it locks IF YOU HOLD THE DEAD ROPE :)
I never feel good about using the shelf, if you havent enough space on the master point then you have built it poorly
@@thomadventuring it’s not always about space, sometimes it’s just about separation of elements. The shelf is safe to use appropriately.
Buy how does it compare to an ATC Pilot? :p
If you put on Brynje poly fishnet underwear you may get wet but won’t get cold. Plus extremely lightweight and fast drying.

I use far back loop for my shoes when not rappeling down but walking
My torrentshell has been great for 2 years … maybe wash your jackets or something?
@JBMountainSkills Hello. Thnx for the very useful content, I am learning a lot with ypur channel. Still, I have doubts about how to haul your partner or abseiling down to them in a traverse route situation. Is there any tips or videos you could show us? Thanks a lot. Keep the great work!!
I always use my lanyard when climbing outdoors. It's just soo handy. It's basically always attached to my harness. Attaching to bolts Attaching to an anchor extend my rappel When ascending a rope When doing a counterbalance rappel rappelling past a knot When trad climbing in a group of three you often need to swap rope ends. So attaching yourself with something that isn't the rope is mandatory and since it's always there I use it. I use it way more often than I use slings. I do carry slings. But since it's always there, I default to using the PAS
I wish I lived closer so I could learn from you, watched loads of your videos and they are always the straight forward easy ways to remember the important stuff
prusik for bailing off one bolt is great - thank you for the video. My initial thought on that though was whether the prusik would hold or snap in the scenario you show with the animation??
Great review! What do you reckon for multipitch/trad is it good or better go for the Cuesta? I want it to be comfy first of all. And what about the leg loops? I like them fixed so probably this is why I won't get an Arcteryx 395A... Which is super comfy on your back but leg loops... Dunno... I tried a S and leg loops were not great to adjust. I have to replace my BD Solution now
Hi JB. Great review, thanks for this. Would you say that this device is Ok for abseiling?
Ok yes, but it wouldn’t be my number one choice.
What would you recommend for Yorkshire 3 peaks?
Massively entertaining 😊

Drizabone parka and trousers, re-oil, lasts donkeys' years.
Q: would it be possible for lefties to swing it round to opposite with handle facing other way for them instead, and lower sort of backwards?
I'm a bit worried about that last technique of tying the rope into a loop through two bolts. As far as i can tell, if the top bolt fails and your fall is arrested by a double strand of rope, that would effectively be a fall factor of 2. I guess that is still better than hitting the ground, but that would not always be a risk. Thoughts?
Would you rather a high factor fall, or to hit the ground..? That's the question I guess and I know my answer! If the top bolt did come out it wouldn't be a fall, because you're in hard to the bolt you're next to. If the bottom bolt came out, you'd fall a v small distance on to the top bolt via the rope. No high fall factor.
ah, fixed to the lower bolt directly as well. Right you are, misunderstood the setup 👍

Did anybody catch the names of the crag?
My bit was at Fedw Fawr, White Beach sector. The Petzl shots were Margalef but not sure which sector.
Nice 👌. That's a Great tip.👍
Glad you liked it!
Exactly the question I had. So it adds a safety layer in comparison to the atc.
I thnk so, yes.
Is the Petzl belayer at 2:09 rolling the brake rope far enough up the lip? If I were tutoring a new Grigri user I'd certainly tell them to pull the rope a little closer to them, so it runs over the centre of the lip.
so thats like a Gri Gri?
In the very loosest sense, yes I guess so.
@@JBMountainSkills thanks !!! I like your videos !
Beside a few gram lighter and the price, how is this better then the CT Alpine Up?
+ steel so should last longer, much less bulky too. Better? It's just a different option, some will prefer it, others won't.
@@JBMountainSkills Thank you for the answer! I am looking to buy my own first belay device. I always disliked the feeding slack on the grigri, so I want to buy something else but that still have an auto assisted mode.
These are worth watching just to add some fun color to stateside climbing banter. "bits of gear", "crack on with it", "your kit mate", "win back gear - which is ace". "screw gate", "beelay" and so on.
whoever the f is belaying without holding the brake strand, please get your brain tested.
I'm thinking more for belayer incapacitated by falling rock, illness, that kind of thing.
Heart attack, rock fall, animal bites / stings for alergic people, etc.; lots of cases where the belayer can become incapacitated, completely outside of their control.
was this scientific?
Hi. I have a question. This comes from years back when I was taught to use two half hitches instead of the mule to tie off. I find Two half hitches easier to teach, easier to learn, faster to tie, and easier to untie. Can you help me understand why the tied off mule is now the norm? Thanks!
They can prove much harder to untie if they're under load, whereas the Munter Mule is super easy.
This video is great and demonstrates exactly what I was curious of. I can’t believe people are arguing with you that this video is promoting handless belaying 😂. You say it like 9 times don’t let go
Apparently I should've said it 99 times 😂 Glad you liked it!
Would you let me belay you without holding the break strand? Then why are you presenting this? Aren't you aware that no anyone who watch this can make a difference between your situation and those where Neox for sure won't block without holding the break strand?
So you didn’t hear me say never let go of the brake strand multiple times?
@@JBMountainSkills i heard you very clearly but some people for sure will think it will lock anyway, i saw in that video. And I don't see the point of this video. In some ideal conditions it will block by itself but in many not so idk conditions it will not and then the climber have big problems.
@@vladdia80 I disagree. The point of the video: it’s not an ATC and could lock if you’re knocked unconscious and let go of the rope. I disagree that your take from the video is reflective of others.
@@JBMountainSkills you are right with the first sentence. Let's agree to disagree about the second one. 😉
Awesome! Is this the long (14ft) or short (9ft)?
I have both but think this is my short one in this video. If I could only have one, I’d personally buy the long one.
What I was hoping to find out in this video was how does it work feeding slack compared to a tubular assisted braking device? I know you've used the Giga Jul as well as a lot of other tubular assisted braking devices. Would you say that this one is easier for lead climbing or would you stick with the tubular style?
Good question. Feeding out is actually more slick than an ATC style device I think. However clearly it can still lock up GriGri style when you’re trying to give out slack. That happens much more infrequently than with a GriGri but there is still a learning curve to get the timing and angles right. I think someone used to an ATC will get the hang of smooth belaying more quickly with a NEOX than a GriGri.
Flash banged way to many times
What trousers are you wearing in this video? Thanks
Prana Bronsons
Thanks for the review, Jez! I picked up a Neox from Outside in Hathersage yesterday morning and really looking forward to trying it out :)
