💻 Another Painted ThinkPad Done! [P2]
It's finally done!
This is a Lenovo ThinkPad P71, it's the beast, the behemoth most gigantus ThinkPad ever (probably). What does it have?
- Intel Xeon 1505 CPU (3.7GHz)
- 32GB RAM
- 4K IPS Display
Taking up where I left off last time, I tackle the elephant in the audio room and this laptop does not have any sound output! I tried everything and eventually narrowed it down to a motherboard issue, even went so far as testing to see if the audio chip was getting power and it was, so I figured maybe it was the chip itself? Only one way to find out, I bought a new chip for $10 and I gave it a shot. I'm pretty n00b at board repair, but I have done a few things with some success. I attempted, I think my soldering was just fine and it's highly possible that the original chip also wasn't broken because the new chip did not fix the issue. Instead of spending more time on it, I went with plan B which was to install an external sound card and put it internally inside the laptop. The new creative chip is actually superior to the one on the motherboard, so it's a win-win.
The only real issues are the the sound card only has one input, so if I want the internal speakers also to work when headphones are not connected I'll need a way to "switch" between them. I got these switch jacks which do just that, only now I have to route all the audio through the jack which is a bit far away. I stole power from the closest USB port and that worked out just fine. The chip works as expected, only issue was that now the speaker output is maybe only 60-70% the volume of the stock sound chip. I spent even more time with some small amplifier boards and they did work great, only they introduced so much ground loop hum and noise/distortion, so I ultimately gave up on that and settled for slightly less speaker output (let's be honest, laptop speakers suck anyway). Headphone volume is loud though and everything sounds great.
Then there was the keyboard ordeal, I ended up redoing it completely and spending hours mapping out my own custom template so if I ever want to do this again, I don't have to do all that work again. After the 2nd print everything was golden, all I had to do left was add some finishing touches which were also golden, and then show it off to you guys.
Many more builds to come, thanks for watching!

Fix your broken palm rest corners on your ThinkPads! This fix will be applicable to all ThinkPads that are using plastic for the case, the same steps will apply to repair any plastic pieces on anything, however for the magnesium base on ThinkPads you won't be able to plastic weld and should go straight to bondo or JB weld. Thanks, if you check my latest videos I do a somewhat MGS themed build 👍
Just buy a BT keyboard.
Just don't use a computer
Can you please do a bmx with dual hubs and mid drive ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I could but what's the point, 3 motors, 3 batteries? BMX frames don't have a lot of room for things and that is just adding more components to try and fit 👍
Yes nice build!
This is extremely helpful. Thanks very much for making this video and for the references you have provided. More power to you!
Thanks for watching 🍻
i just bought the cheapest bmx i could find to convert to electric. Thanks for the inspiration
Awesome 🍻 Hope your build goes well

I hope it works for you 🍻
Omg I been wanting to build a bmx ebike 😅
Go for it! 🍻
if someone did this with a 1500watt kit on a 20 inch bmx would the wheel still not fit or would it fit without having to expand the frame?
You will need to stretch. BMX is 110mm dropouts, most kits are 135mm. Some front wheel kits are 110 but they are meant for the front wheel.
@@hightech-lowlife Okay, thanks for the advice, I love your videos!
@@Chucklodown14 No problem! Thank you. A 15mm stretch is very small that is a little over a half an inch, but remember that is split between each side, so really a 1/4in per side, it's very small.

can i use this with game controller
Yes, but I would check with handheld scientific if they can confirm it will work with your specific controller. They are very DIY friendly, so in the even it didn't work, I believe they would refund you for the return even if you mess something up.
In their FAQ they actually say game controllers are not supported. I've been building a similar device for around a year and I've actually managed to have support for basic game controllers (no xbox and other controllers that require extra drivers though)
hi nice video. one question tho is it still working to this day? I want to convert my bike 2 but don't know how long it would last.

@@merlijntjetovenaar1004 If your frame is steel and the dropout thickness is sufficient then I personally wouldn't bother. If it is aluminum then I would. 350W is not a lot, just make sure your axle nuts are tight.

Bro suggest me : I want to build an ev super bike that can do above 100kmph in Reasonable budget is it feasible? Main interest is more speed while keeping in mind the petrol prices in my country. Or Should i go with a petrol engine and enjoy? (Because petrol engine have more prower?
Ok i got my answer at 14:00 😅
@@BLUE-uy3fb For ebikes, getting to 60mph is expensive, getting to 40 is pretty cheap. You have to pay a lot for that extra 20mph. Gas bikes also have a huge advantage for going fast as they are designed to do that for a long amount of time (freeway riding). If you run an ebike at highway speeds, even the production ev motorcycles like Zero Motorcycles your ev range drops considerably when going those speeds for any length of time. Same for EV cars going high speeds, towing, etc. EVs are better for slower, stop and go usage like city driving.
I love this perspective 7:00. 😂
Thanks 🍻

Fortunately I'm into thinkpads' new keyboard. What a relief...
It's a pretty easy mod
So I have a head scratcher for you. Hub motor runs perfectly fine off the ground but stutters on the ground any thoughts?
Did you run through the tests outlined in the video?
what brand do you use when doing a hub drive motor? i wanted to put a mid drive motor on my mongoose wildcard bmx, but i feel like i dont really need the mid drive for it.
For hub motors If it's 1500W or less then whatever is cheap (voilamart, juaopay, etc). I will use NB Power for 3-6KW, and if it's more than that (10-20KW) I will use QS Motor.
Absolut amazing bike! Nice Job💪 helps me a lot, thx
Thanks man!
Damn, what a smart way to do a powerful diy battery.... dang!
It works, but I wouldn't recommend it as my battery knowledge since this build has increased a ton. It's better to just make a single pack with a single BMS 👍
Can you do this on a middle suspension bike ?
I've made multiple full suspension builds on my channel already 👍
what about dongles? so it’s essentially a tri-mode
May be possible if you gut a different keyboard for the transciever. Haven't seen any selectable ones available for DIY.
Not a bad DIY.

Yes! I was 'like' #100.
What about pairing issues? Every bluetooth keyboard and mouse I ever used always had issues losing connection and the constant repairing was more annoying than putting up with a wired connection. I would think if you could make it a 2.4ghz signal it would be a better solution.
My experience with bluetooth has been very good/consistent but YMMV. I have some new modules to test and one of them is 2.4, I will make an update on this video showing the new modules and comparing them 👍
@@hightech-lowlife That sounds great. I also like the idea of the 2.4 being plug and play vs. pairing.
@@pimplefacedprick2595 There are pros and cons to both, for 2.4 you need a USB plug for the dongle which isn't always handy depending on which device you're using.

Took all screws off that were holding cover. Cover starts to remove, but then stops. Any suggestoons?
Check for any obstructions that would prevent it from coming fully off. How much is it moving before it stops? Once the screws are out the only thing holding it on is friction, it's possible you just need to pull/pry harder.
after going through all these steps and finding nothing wrong im assuming the connector in the controller is broken
If the connector in the controller is faulty then I don't think it would be possible for the rest of the tests to succeed, although I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "connector in the controller"?

the problem with E bikes is that they are heavier than a regular bike of which makes it hard to pedal it even with the pedal asset , we are forced to use the full throttle because it's just too heavy ...
They don't have to be much heavier, there are so many different ebike styles and sizes. I have a few that feel exactly the same as pedaling a non-powered bike 👍
He must live on flat ground without rolling hills to climb?
1500W should be plenty of power to climb a hill, and you may want to pedal as well to assist. If you need to go 40MPH uphill then by all means spend the thousands to get yourself there 👍 Gas powered still makes more economical sense if you are needing to go very fast up steep hills.
@@hightech-lowlife won't you agree if someone wants an E bike that can go up to 40 MPH at that point they better buy a motorcycle helmet & not that stupid E bike Helmet ? I think going super fast on an E bike is very dangerous cause they shift speed so very fast & so suddenly that a car going at the same speed can't keep up with the agility of the e Bike. I lived in San Fran most E bikes in my opinion can't handle the hills on a daily bases & trying to use pedal assist is still very hard because those E bikes are so much heavier than a regular Bike so it takes more work to pedal even with the assist , & plus Bicycles /E bikes are not designed to go super fast at faster speeds.. unlike a a Harley that comes in at like 480 to 500 pounds; the physics of going super fast on a E bike is not supported ;the laws of physics will take out the rider .. more dangerous than riding a motorcycle at super higher speeds.. just my opinion..
Any suggestions for making an old IBM model M into a BT keyboard? I believe that I can follow most of the same steps with the updated wiring diagram, however I have two additional boards from Keebd that I have to use since this keyboard isn't natively USB. Any help is appreciated!
Shouldn't be too hard, first just convert the IBM to USB (it's been done many times), then this will go from USB to BT 👍
I wish I could have a compact foldable ebike that could do about 35mph. Like a really unassuming thing that i can fold up and bring indoors. would it need a 1500w battery? And how would it fit on such a small bike? Especially when folded and stored away.
Totally doable, 1500W should get you to 35MPH roughly 👍
projeto incrível parabéns
Thanks so much man 👍
