- It's finally done!
This is a Lenovo ThinkPad P71, it's the beast, the behemoth most gigantus ThinkPad ever (probably). What does it have?
- Intel Xeon 1505 CPU (3.7GHz)
- 32GB RAM
- 4K IPS Display
Taking up where I left off last time, I tackle the elephant in the audio room and this laptop does not have any sound output! I tried everything and eventually narrowed it down to a motherboard issue, even went so far as testing to see if the audio chip was getting power and it was, so I figured maybe it was the chip itself? Only one way to find out, I bought a new chip for $10 and I gave it a shot. I'm pretty n00b at board repair, but I have done a few things with some success. I attempted, I think my soldering was just fine and it's highly possible that the original chip also wasn't broken because the new chip did not fix the issue. Instead of spending more time on it, I went with plan B which was to install an external sound card and put it internally inside the laptop. The new creative chip is actually superior to the one on the motherboard, so it's a win-win.
The only real issues are the the sound card only has one input, so if I want the internal speakers also to work when headphones are not connected I'll need a way to "switch" between them. I got these switch jacks which do just that, only now I have to route all the audio through the jack which is a bit far away. I stole power from the closest USB port and that worked out just fine. The chip works as expected, only issue was that now the speaker output is maybe only 60-70% the volume of the stock sound chip. I spent even more time with some small amplifier boards and they did work great, only they introduced so much ground loop hum and noise/distortion, so I ultimately gave up on that and settled for slightly less speaker output (let's be honest, laptop speakers suck anyway). Headphone volume is loud though and everything sounds great.
Then there was the keyboard ordeal, I ended up redoing it completely and spending hours mapping out my own custom template so if I ever want to do this again, I don't have to do all that work again. After the 2nd print everything was golden, all I had to do left was add some finishing touches which were also golden, and then show it off to you guys.
Many more builds to come, thanks for watching!

amazing. spectacular. perfection. unique. wonderful. complex. artistic. underappreciated. gorgeous.
Thanks so much man!
Amazing Build!! I love how you did the Keyboard! You def inspired me to get my new Thinkpad for paint custom theme. The Carpenter Brut made me contemplate a (dark)synth theme build
Hell yeah man! Thanks so much. You can never go wrong with Carpenter Brut anything 🤘🤘
this looks so good that I'm thinking about one day doing a custom laptop paint job my self
You should try it out, thanks!
The laptop came out looking really great! Love how the keyboard turned out too

Thanks man! I haven't stopped, maybe just an extended period of not posting 😂 been busy working on things that I will show you guys soon 🍻🍻
You should sell the keyboard graphics as a service... that's freaking amazing
Thanks man! It's too much work to be a business, but I appreciate the thought 🍻
Wicked love it 💪👊
Thanks brother! 🤘
@@hightech-lowlife that came out really good 👍 hope your well my friend
Didn't know you were a fan of Carpenter Brut
100% seen them live a few times! 👍
@@hightech-lowlife lucky! He/They never came to my city. If you haven't already I recommend checking out "The Rise of the Synths" Documentary. It pretty much goes over the entire genre and how it blew up during the good Ol' Myspace days. They interview all of the artists as well. John Carpenter is also the narrator which is dope. It's not streaming anywhere I don't think but it is out there... I doubt you'll have a problem finding it 😉
Slay .......
🍻
No lie most of the time with bad audio 1 little resistor or capacitor is to blame. Either got to test for a short or if you have a thermal camera it will light up like a Christmas tree. Basically a 2 dollar part causing all the trouble.
Yes, I do have a thermal camera and have fixed other boards with it, but all my testing didn't show any shorts, even replaced the original chip, still did not fix it, so I'm not sure what the issue was unfortunately.
@@hightech-lowlife ah no way you must have caught s real hard one but loved your solution. it was also the only thing i could think of
@@Jimmys_TheBestCop If I was a better board repair man, I'm sure it's fixable, just not for my skills and time at this juncture 🤘
Yo @hightech-lowlife what are all the parts to your diy electric bmx bike, what is the total price and where can I get all the parts
I built that one a while ago (pre pandy) so the prices of things were a bit better, but all in I think about 1200? I wouldn't recommend the battery I purchased, so you'll have to find or have one built that is better, the frame can be any BMX one you like, and the motor kit I bought is no longer available but they do have similar: www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802033522957.html
