💻 I Painted And Modified Another ThinkPad [P1]

- They told me I couldn't do it, so I did it again.
This is a Lenovo ThinkPad P71, it's the beast, the behemoth most gigantus ThinkPad ever (probably). What does it have?
- Intel Xeon 1505 CPU (3.7GHz)
- 32GB RAM
- 4K IPS Display
I bought this used for a pretty decent price, but it does have some issues. Namely there is no sound output at all. One of the hinges is broken, and one of the corners on the palmrest is broken off. The trackpad is worn all the way through and it's just not in the best shape. A perfect candidate for some mods and customization.
I wasn't planning on making a video on this but after disassembling it nearly completely I thought "ok, I'll just make a video". You'll see me go through the steps in this part one (of two) videos detailing both the repairs, modification and customization of this very nice P71.
One of my main concerns was the audio, I tried everything to get it to work but it just wouldn't. Even went as far as reflowing the audio chip and still nothing. I thought what if I get an external audio chip and somehow try to embed it? This led me to finding a WWAN adapter that gives you an internal USB port. Sadly Lenovo likes to lock down their WWAN ports with needing to "authorize" it. I've already jailbroke one of these adapters before and it is quite annoying to do so I may think of an alternative.
Disassembly was straightforward and painting went off without too many issues. I did forget to paint one panel accidentally but this was easy to fix after the fact.
Graphics took me forever as there were a ton and I probably overdid it. Lining up the print took almost as long as making the graphics as there were a lot to arrange, but ultimately everything was laid down as close to perfect as I could make it.
Lastly for this episode I fix the hing with a nail splint and a treacherous amount of JB Weld. Please follow along next time where we address even more issues and put it all back together.

JB Weld is crazy strong you can drill through it and it will support hundred of lbs of tensile strength. CA Glue plus graphite powder you can barely saw or drill through it cause it is so strong. Most of these hinges are pretty cheap to replace. Also repaired a lot by wrapping it in thin copper wire and then soldering it.

Even more when they're stuff like this, or your builds-- so yeah, I guess I just love your videos. :) I wasn't aware that Lenovo even made a thinkpad without a removable trackpad. That kind of feels like pissing in the holy water, but like you said: everyone is adopting the anti-repair stuff these days. Eugh.
Thanks so much for the kind words 🙏. All the ThinkPads I ever owned before had replaceable trackpads, I'm finally moving up generations and I don't like what I'm seeing. I'm hoping with more people calling this kind of stuff out that we'll see at least some companies pushing back (like framework) where repairability is a feature. I think IBM was the holy grail, then early Lenovo was a bit more sinful, and after a taste of too many profits now they're dipping their toes in the 7th circle 🍻

@@hightech-lowlife Thank you. For ages we waited for sebi to make new ThinkPad videos. The drought for years of ThinkPad content. But there's recently been a Suttle resurgence. Until Lenovo or some third parties reinvigorate the scene we'll be stuck with t480's and w541's tho. And somepeople with what used to be especially heavy wallets have p50's and p70's. Either way great job

Looks great, thats a lot of plastic area to cover on that size laptop. Glad the paint behaved this time unlike the Akira one. Would love to see a video with more on the graphics side and the UV printing of them you mentioned. Keep going with the awesome builds and customisations

Yo i had a question since i think i am getting closer to painting my thinkpad (t480) beige. Can i just paint it with white primer and skip the painting part since the primer IS already white??
Are you asking if it's fine to use primer as paint? Sure. Primer is more porous than paint to allow paint to stick to it better, so generally the surface isn't as smooth but I have customized many things only using primer.
I just wouldn't recommend it for metal surfaces as a way to prevent rust because of the porous nature it will not seal the metal from moisture as well as paint does.
