  • Hey guys! I'm back with another review, going to keep trying to get my hands on new devices where I can and do more content like this. I apologize if its missing some items that you really want to see, and I promise I will continue to learn and get better at this!
    Sections:
    00:00 Introduction, Specs and Pricing
01:05 Chassis & Input Devices (KB, Trackpad, etc.)
05:13 Disassembly and Internal Review (Cooling, RAM, SSDs, Battery)
    08:00 Benchmarks and Thermal Discussion
    16:55 Conclusion & Wrap-Up
Also, please note that I had roughly ~72 hours to gather my thoughts on this machine after using it, run some benchmarks and record the data, do the written review, and shoot/edit this video, so I don't expect it to be perfect!
I am trying to standardize some things and streamline some of the specific details that takes time to gather, namely disassembly and thermal performance. I had some great feedback from Reddit already and will try to respond to you all here if you have questions or concerns.

Ps. I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and always wanted that Thinkpad keyboard experience. But maybe the tradeoffs in other areas outweigh those "magic" keys.. hehe! Although they have a 39 % discount right now on the P1 gen 4.. So about 2200 USD and then I'll get that older nicer keyboard too, with the greater keystroke travel, if I understood you and other reviewers correctly?

Could you please clarify what you meant by "don't pick high-end GPUs such as A3000, A4500..." and "go maximum 3070 Ti"? To be more specific, A3000 vs 3070 Ti, which one do you consider "higher end"? I think based on the history of the product lines the A4500 should be considered as the workstation counterpart of the 3070 Ti, so 3070 Ti is higher. However they did double the vRAM in the Ampere series. In reality, I think either A3000 and 3070 Ti should suffice my workflow, but I want to go with the one with less heat. Do you have any thoughts on the heat issue A3000, A4500, and 3070 Ti? A different way of thinking is they are going to generate exactly the same amount of heat, because they will be limited to the same TGP/TDP.

Hi! Thanks for the great review! Do you think that having a relatively weaker GPU (an 2000 ADA) would help with the overheating issue? Because I was checking the indepth review about that one, and it seemed that the temps were quite "controllable", and the device was still "usable" for some gaming.
Also: If you decrease the 3070/3080ti wattage to around 70-80, would that drop help with the temps and still have a performance at the level or above the mentioned 2000 ADA??

Hey there! Can you define "Usability" for me? I dedicated a good portion of the video talking about the keyboard/trackpad/weight/etc. but I want to make sure I cover something that I missed.
For panel specs, its identical to the Legion 5 Pro/Legion 7 panel and offers 100% sRGB coverage at around 500 nits. It's an amazing panel if you get one without any defects.
Fan noise is very reasonable under light loads, but gets at or beyond 50dB under heavy load, which is as loud as most gaming laptops.

On one side, it’s a powerful tool. On the other, I’m totally disappointed by all recent Windows notebooks because of the heat, the fan noise when it’s getting too hot, the horrendous battery life and the inadmissible performance loss when battery powered!
I am looking for a replacement to my X1 Carbon, as it can’t handle photo editing (it takes several minutes to process and export single photos!).
No current Windows notebook is able to do the job on battery with a satisfying autonomy.
I’ll therefore have to go for a Mac.
And to be honnest: a 16" M1 pro 32GB 1TB with high school discount is even cheaper than Lenovo’s, HP’s, Dell’ or Asus’s high end models that have a similar plugged-in performance but a far worse battery life and on-battery performance, in addition to having inferior screens.

    • @octoslut
      @octoslut Před rokem

it happens even in p1 g5/x1 extreme g5, its because its the nature of liquid metal. it has a chemical reaction with heatsink metals, with copper the reaction is neutral and not damaging but does remove liquid metal from your cpu/gpu. this is because the liquid metal gets absorbed into the heatsink.

So, by changing PROCHOT's threshold to a lower temperature, you will start seeing power/clock reductions at whatever threshold you've set it at. I'd recommend doing this if your workloads call for shorter bursts of CPU demands, vs. lowering the power limits where sustained performance is more important over long periods of time.

If I am interpreting your question correctly, the MUX switch available in the BIOS doesn't *disable* the GPU, it just enables standard Optimus/hybrid behavior between the iGPU and dGPU. Thermals will be basically the same/within margin of error in either scenario, with maybe a few C higher on the CPU if the iGPU is enabled and being used for a 3D load at the same as another workload.

    - the housing makes noises when typing under the right wrist
    - the fans are running all the time, even on idle
    - maybe it's a lack of compatibility of 11th generation processors - I can't use VirtualBox > linux machines won't boot on version 6.1.34 (latest version)

@@brax-tech , thanks for answering. My guess is that Lenovo is lying again about the MUX switch. I guess they don't have the real MUX switch as the real one should be able to turn off dGPU completely based on what I have seen on Asus notebooks. It's shame that Lenovo can't really come up with a laptop with good thermals and decent performance. Look at Apple, they absolutely nailed it with the M1 Macbook Pro. Amazing thermals, amazing battery life and performance. The keyboard I would say is pretty decent too.

Hey! Do you think switching to a ThinkPad P1 for programming and multitasking is a better option than my current M1max 16inch? I'm using windows 11arm with parallels to code on visual studio ARM64 and of course all my reverse engineering tasks(all of the tools run as x86, so emulated:(. ) are done on windowsARM so I rarely use Mac os.
I originally bought the mb16 because of it being silent, cool to the touch and that it has top performance. However when using parallels Windows11 Arm, i still get like 22% less performance compared to native Mac os performance. ~10 000geekbench multi , 1560single). :((
In my region, the ThinkPad p1 G5 with QHD165panel, 12700h 16g and rtxA2000 is on sale for 2100usd and the rest i could spend on a monitor and an eGPU. I really love the design of the 01/X1 extreme, tbh a lot more than the mac

The M1 Max MacBook Pro is far better than this Thinkpad and is honestly the best laptop on the market. That said it made no sense for you to buy it if you're using so many VM's to run Windows software and no use for MacOS. Who does that? You wasted your money. You won't find a better Windows laptop but that made no sense you buying that MacBook Pro if you're not going to use it as a Mac. Either that or find software equivalents. This is 2023. There is very little software that isn't written for MacOS. If you can't get past that then you shouldn't have ever bought it.
