  • Part 7 of the 1982 Yamaha XV920 "Virago" Cafe Racer Build!
I know it's been a while guys, but I do have more progress on the cafe racer build!
In this episode we pretty much finish out the entire subframe (minus the seat). It took me a while because getting all the angles right on this was quite tricky and I had to redo a lot of it, mainly the two rear kickup tubes. These gave me a heap of trouble and I had to redo them like 4 or 5 times until I was happy with them. I did learn a lot of things though and it will only help my fabrications skills in the future.
The only tricky parts were lining up the smaller rear supports. It was critical that I got them a uniformly parallel as possible, and things tend to shift when you're welding, but I did much better on these than the rear main kickup supports.
Once I pretty much had the subframe all done up it was time to make the seatpan. I could have gone with a bunch of different materials here, fiberglass, wood, aluminum, but I just stayed with some thin steel. It was fairly easy and straightforward to make, the only hard part will be the front where it meets the tank, but I will figure that out later when I start to mount some foam on it. I drilled a ton of holes to stretch the vinyl over and I'll either rivet or screw it down. I also welded the mounting nuts and it was tricky because the thin metal is very hard to melt without blowing right through it.
After that we throw the last of the smaller supports on and after a lot of grinding and welding later, the subframe is pretty much done!
Next episode we tackle the tank!

920CC's of pure V-twin thumping power! You can't beat the sound and feel of a twin.
    3. The Mods
We're going to be doing many mods throughout this project, the bike will not look much like it does in stock form here. Custom tank mods, front end, rear end, seat, electronics, suspension, lighting, exhaust. Just about everything will be modified except for the frame and engine!

Working my way through your series. Those supports for the seat look awesome!! You can tell by the end of the video that the stance looks great!

Thanks so much man! I'm very happy with how the stance is coming out, better than I saw it in my mind. I ran into some issues with my gas tank which is why I haven't updated this series in a while, but I have been working on it and I will be giving an update with more progress on this project very soon. Thanks for watching!

Cool build, nice to see someone with the same level of experience / skill working on a bike project rather than all the “pro” builders here on CZcams. I’m building a street tracker based on a Kawasaki CSR750 Twin and I can learn a lot from your experience as well. Keep the nice build videos coming 👍👍

Thanks man! I'm definitely more on the "beginner" side of things when it comes to fabrication for sure 👍I do show all the ways I mess up too. I've had this build on hold temporarily while I worked on another project but I am almost done with that. So I will be finishing this up my cafe racer in the coming months! Thanks for watching and I wish you luck on your build!

Looking dope bro, I was picturing what a future ebike frame would look like based on your seat, replacing the motorbike. All different angles with square tubes and sheet metal, in my mind it looks pretty cool and I know you can do it

Dude. I'm not being insulting, but you should have so many more views and comments.
I watch loads of stuff like this, and I find your bike videos are the best.
I'm no CZcams expert, but maybe you need to do something with your content search description .
I don't know, it's just I think your stuff is pure class.
I'd love to have a bmx like the one you built.
I wanna build one, one day.

Thanks man! I would never take offense to something like that, but I appreciate the context. It's a huge compliment to me, and I guess ultimately it falls on me as to why my channel isn't bigger. I guess I have a strange relationship with YT though, because I'm actually ok with having a smaller following. I'd rather have very few people who actually like the videos and are genuinely interested in what I'm doing, than a ton of people that just want to see some hype or honestly I don't know what people like or want. At this point I'm just trying to make videos that I myself would want to watch, but I'm always open to suggestions or how to make things better for viewers and I really appreciate the feedback.
I have plans for another ebmx build and it's going to have double the power of the last one, so I'm excited for that. Trust me when I say I have so many projects lined up that I pretty much have content for the next 5 years easily. 👍
You should totally build one when you're ready, I know that building your own bike is always so much more enjoyable than just buying one. But I am also biased because I really like building stuff.
Thanks so much dude, it's messages like this that keep me going when I'm burned out and feel like I'm just grinding, so really, thanks a lot man.

@@hightech-lowlifeIf I had the money and knowledge, I'd Build an all chrome ebmx. 2 x 72v 🔋, 2 controller bac8000, 2 x hub wheels and half twist throttle.
I know it sounds nuts, but you've gotta break the boundaries.
You're gonna laugh but when I think of torque arms I actually do think they may serve a purpose.
Imagine the stress on 2 nuts, and how nuts slip, then the chain loosens.
I think a torque arm would renforce the wheel massively.
      Lol.

@@theordinary1175 You should totally do it someday! I'm not a fan of 2WD as for most applications it's not worth the added cost, and complexity for what you get for it, but I've seen people do it and it's cool for what it is 👍 Nah, I'm not actually against torque arms, they do serve a purpose and if you're putting a front hub then almost always need them for sure. Thanks man!

Do you have a multimeter? I would check the voltage output of the charger to see if it is operating correctly first. If everything else is working fine it could be the charger itself, but also could be an issue with the BMS on your battery.

@@a1daone Did you check the output voltage of the charger? This will let you know if the charger is at least working. You want to work from easiest/cheapest to hardest/most expensive when diagnosing something - no use wasting time or money if it's something simple. I would check that first, let me know. Thanks.
