trinities 380 - Dr. Dustin Smith on Wisdom Christology in the Gospel of John
trinities.org/blog/podcast-380-dr-dustin-smith-on-wisdom-christology-in-the-gospel-of-john/ To understand a book as its author intended, you don’t look to its future, but rather to its past. What has this author read, and what could he presuppose his audience to have read? These other pieces of literature are like tools in the author’s hands.
The biblical book of Proverbs famously features a vivid personification, Lady Wisdom. She pleads with people to seek and find her, and she even appears alongside God when he is creating. As Dr. Dustin Smith explains, this character appears in a number of later ancient Jewish writings in various ways, and can even be described as “incarnate” in certain people. Many of these would have been accessible both to the author of John and his audience.
Paul famously writes that Christ is “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24). But as James Dunn has observed, this idea of Christ as God’s wisdom is more prominent in John than in any other New Testament book. Drawing on an impressive array of recent scholarship, in Wisdom Christology in the Gospel of John Dr. Dustin Smith argues that “the Johannine Jesus is incarnate Wisdom and that this christological presentation permeates all twenty-one chapters of the Fourth Gospel” (p. 213).
In this new discussion we focus on the basics of “wisdom christology” and on how that idea sheds light on the famous opening to the fourth gospel, John 1:1-18.

    Dr. Nemes excludes a fifth possibility: ONLY ONE HYPOSTASIS, the Father, is logically prior to both the divine ousia and other two hypostases, in that order. That's how the Cappadocians perceived it and defined the Trinity and the Monarchy of the Father, as proven by Dr. Branson's work on the subject. So way to knock down a strawman by excluding a possibility! Monarchical trinitarianism solves these objections.

But today on his rumble i got banned for saying i couldn't see the screen. Yeah I understand the difference between the father and his Son and how in nicia it came to be and I believe the father is greater than the son as he says himself and even the kjv was written much much later by that time believed in the Trinity and if you try to fit Hebrew than greek to English and read the Torah and go to the first century 100 years after the disciples died and then the Trinity is another problem, it's wrong to say that Jesus was God and he created all things, because if he was then why did he grow in strength and wisdom and you have never seen a father and son the same age and he was given all authority and he said he didn't speak of his own words do his own will he prayed to his father and he said he loves his father and God and yes he is given all authority on heaven and on earth and we love him because he is the savior and Lord and his God is the only true God and Jesus was sent by his God and he came at the right time to save people and the Trinity is a lie and trinitarians try to make coequal and Jesus said the father is greater than I and the third person Holy spirit doesn't exist the spirit is God himself and Christ himself notice the words the spirit of yehweh and yeshua in Genesis 1 while the power of God was resting on the face of the deep God is spirit and after Christ resurrection as the only begotten Son that paid for the sin's of the world to say God the son and not the Son of God is one of the ways trinitarians who pray to 3 God's a mess and the Trinity is a Catholic Church teaching and everything is God to them and Trinity symbol is the same as trinitarians and they are not worried cause they have their trinitarian teacher's and they can't separate the father and his Son the God who John 3:16 speaking about the Father and yeshua his Son and the glory due to the Father and the thanks and respect to him and he deserves honor and respect for what the son did and the Trinity destroy the Father and Son relationship with coequal and the spirit is not a third person and after all this time and Jesus said in John 17:3 that is eternal life that they may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ who you sent, people are confused really?

    As a Christian of Jewish origin I say that when my father Avraham saw the Lord God YHWH manifested in the flesh, I mean the episode narrated in Genesis 18, he knew very well that he was before the One True God manifested in the flesh and this also applies to all manifestations of God as מלאך־יהוה or the angel of YHWH. My fathers, the ancient Israelites knew that the מלאך־יהוה was YHWH himself and did not believe that he was another “person” or another “hypostasis” and one of the many examples of this also emerges from Judges 2:1-3. And verses such as Acts 16:6-7, Romans 8:9, and Galatians 4:6 when compared with verses such as John 1:1; 14, John 14:9, 2Corinthians 5:19 and Colossians 2:9 clearly demonstrate that the Lord Jesus Christ is God the Eternal Father manifested in flesh and in fact also from the comparison between 1Timothy 3:16 and 1Corinthians 8:6 in which we read that the only God is the Father it is understood that the Father manifested himself in the flesh and the Bible teaches that he is the Lord Jesus Christ God the Eternal Father manifested in the flesh. And that the Lord Jesus Christ is God the Eternal Father manifested in flesh also emerges from the comparison between John 2:19-21 and Galatians 1:1.

If you people are any better than Sam, then why would you people say such despicable things? It only attracts more despicable things. Yes, Sam is quite the character but what lie has he told? If you people are any better than him then i encourage you all for the sake of truth, fight evil with good , not evil with evil. God is greater than all, so if God always fights evil with good than so should his followers. Spread truth then you will see where the love is. Everything beautiful comes from God as it should be. This is a modern, western view of personification. It's not in line with how the ancients thought of divine persons. I would implore people to go listen to Dr Michael Heiser "Psalm 91 and Demonic Doom" on his Naked Bible Podcast. The "Terror by night" and the "Arrow by Day" were _not_ simply abstract personifications but spirit persons. This biblical unitarian view of Wisdom is out of harmony and a rejection of the historical data

    • @eew8060
      @eew8060 Před 2 měsíci

      @@moosa86 Psalm 91 is poetry literature just like Proverbs 8. And the Jews (per the data that Dr Heiser provides) saw actual spirit entities there. Not just abstracts or phenomena personified. There really no hard distinction between the two. The "stars" of heaven were actually the sons of God in the poetic book of Job. (Job 38:7) That didn't mean they thought stars were persons but that the real sons could be personified as stars without erasing the concept of actual existence. So Wisdom has to be considered with this background data in mind.

      @eew8060 Okay so then going by this logic why is Wisdom referred to as a female (ie “Lady”)? Assuming that you’re a Trinitarian, do you believe that this Wisdom being spoken of in Proverbs 8 is the pre-existent Jesus Christ? If so, why would it be referred to as a female when Jesus was male?

    Dale, have you ever heard of Steve Gregg? He has been teaching God's word for many years, and he is a very gifted and fair debater. He has a website and a radio show called "The Narrow Path". I think it would be really helpful to the body of Christ to have more debates about the "deity of Christ", perhaps with Steve. Just listening to the opening from James White, he is building a doctrine solely based on human inference and stitching together Scripture by presupposing the conclusion that he already beleives.....and ignoring the clear revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God, a man, whose God and Father is "Yahweh". But, for some reason Trinitarians cannot accept His humanity....and knit together a doctrine of inference....similar to to the way other doctrines , like "Calvinism". Not, only is it emotionally charged, many add this belief about Jesus to being "essential for salvation". We will continue to pray for God to teach us all the truth, and call us into unity.

    Running at night is not an act whose purpose is to result in mugging or assault. Sex is an act whose purpose is to result in the creation of new life.

    In a live stream yesterday, he kept insulting christians who asked him a criticial question with words like; wh*re, dog, son of a wh*re, your mother's a dog, son of the devil etc. It's really sad, because he's genuinely very knowledgable about many things, and makes himsefl available to take questions etc. A pity that he's so fragile when it comes to disagreement and even slight criticism. People have to walk on egg shells around him.

    Worst cross examination/ Q&A by Dr Tuggy I have ever heard in a debate. Makes decent points, but zero logical and methodical points

    Trinitarians don't know why Christ came as a man and had to die on the cross. Christ's metamorphosis from a human being who had the nature of sin that could be tempted to an immortal man who could not was the reason for it all. Thus setting the real example for all those who would follow him in becoming a partaker of the divine nature. God doesn't need to change his nature. It was, therefore, unnecessary for Him to become a man to participate in a process of purification like the rest of His creation. If God had to do any suffering and changing it would have been long before he created anything. But such is mere speculation.

    This is so cringe. It shows how Heiser should stay in his lane with ANE and Hebrew scripture studies. He always fumbles New Testament theology because he is so stuck to weak American Evangelical apologetics and totally misses the historical context of why things like the trinity had to be postulated in the first place.

    Everybody who regards the Bible as the final word on religion would agree that any core Christian doctrine must be clearly taught in the Bible. Not only does this sink the Trinity doctrine, it also sinks abolishing the Sabbath or replacing it with Sunday. Any proof-text for this can be easily overthrown, e.g. Col 2:16. The Greek word used there, sabbatōn, is devoid of the definite article which is so often used in the rest of the New Testament when the seventh-day Sabbath is clearly meant. Also, the Sunday crowd claims that the next verse says the weekly Sabbath is, among others, a shadow of things to come. However, the Bible is clear in both in Genesis 1 and Exodus 20 that the weekly Sabbath points backward to creation, not forward. This clearly excludes the weekly Sabbath from the list in Col 2:16. Words cannot change this. Assumption is mentioned. As all the earliest Christians were Jews, it's safe to assume that everything in Judaism carries over into Christianity, except things explicitly excluded. The only clear, explicit exclusion is circumcision. Food and drink are also mentioned, but exactly what's now allowed which was not allowed before is unclear. The only prohibition on drinking I can think of was blood. Restoring the true God is essential, but not completing the restoration, and retaining things like the Roman Catholic Sunday, is not going all the way.
