I’m impressed
My budget ML rifle was shooting about 4 inches at 50 yards. I used a wad over my powder, and it came down to 1 inch. Now all I need to do is a ladder test, and buy better sights.
I get around 2,500 ft pounds, pretty darn amazing. Of course that's muzzle, but still.
I wonder about that peep sight, the way you shoot, man. I got that same rifle 30yrs ago, accurate as heck, but what you can do with a round ball is very good. You're right, most shooters have no idea what they're missing. They teach you ballistics, are fun and effective enough.
You Americans are lucky over here in Australia we only get one choice of powder its WANO we can't get Swiss or anything else
OUTSTANDING!
Nice but does it improve accuracy??
GREAT GROUP
Ten grains of Farina cereal on top of the powder prevents the lube from your patch containing the round ball invading the main charge.Same sort of patch saving method and accuracy is improved.
I miss your videos as I learned quite a bit from you. I hope you come back someday.
Hello Lewis, thanks for sharing ! the mould is referenced in 485 grains at accurate, but you said 429 in the video, is it another version ? Best regards from France.
love your videos
What is the front sight and are you using a 6 oclock hold?
Wow
Excellent! Thank you!!!
Excellent! As always!!!
Good shots! I love what you do. Is that a Lyman medium siight? ANd have you tried fffg powders in that 50?
I used aeroshell anti seize. Had it on hand for ar builds. Its for the barrel nut, and on flash hiders. Holds up to alot of heat.
Another outstanding video! You encourage me to spend more time on the 54 Thank You Idaho Lewis! Christ Bless You and Family, Man!
I like your show, do more.
Never had thar happen, excwpt i ve used a thin atch.normal patches never .but if it works for you thats fine.hornet or wasp best works fine also
In over 40 years of shooting muzzleloaders, I've never used an over powder patch, and my patches have never come out looking like your tattered patches. You need to change the material you're using for your patches. This over powder patch fad is a bunch of whooeey.
Thank you for sharing
👍
Are your shots grouping better with an extra patch? Tbh if not it seems like a waste of time?
Ok, I want to know what’s in the spray bottle? Some magic juice?
Ragged, pitted, rusted pipe with a thin patch, ask me how I know.
What load did you use
Is your front sight .404 or .494 height ?
Still not understand way ?
I have never use a over powder patch. You are using to hot of a load, if your patch is that bad, cut the amount of power back you are using per shot.
Well i have the same rifle and is not acutate like you say , yes acurate at 30 yards yes , 3"of center at 50 yards 8"of center at 100 yards i have two rifles hawken 45,renegade 50 cal both same change powder patces size balls to conical move sights same thing
Why oh why can't I find any of these sights anywhere???
use a thicker patch problem solved your using to thin of a patch that why it's burning the edges
With that rifle with stock sights it is a game getter
Hi MR Lewis. I just want to ask. Is it possable to shoot 50 cal out of a 54 cal rifle. Those bullets are very scarse in south africa. Thank you
I have the same rifle. My dad got it for me when I was 14 for free because the previous owner’s son had supposedly dry balled it. We had no idea of the powder charge or projectile type so we were wary of conventional methods and never succeeded in clearing it. I’m 36 now and finally removed the breech using heat. I placed the breech over flame and retreated to a safe place and distance. It never fired and I discovered a cleaning jag and no powder charge! I hope it shoots as good as yours!
I like to do a dry patch over the powder then a pre-lubed patch with the ball
Is an over powder patch more accurate or do you get the same fucking accuracy
Off topic: That chattering squirrel is exactly like the one i had here in W.Montana, around '95. Big game hunting with my .280 Rem and sat against a trunk for a mid morning break. Squirrel Immediately started chattering and did so for about 20 minutes, whereupon i gave up and moved on. I determined to have a few low powered shell next time. So a cast round ball in 7mm with 5.0 grains of Red Dot or 6.0 grains of Blue Dot and over the years have shut up a few annoying squirrels as well as potted a rabbit and many more grouse. Ok, back to the subject at hand... ☆
I like hunting bit that's pretty stupid excuse to kill something. In my opinion anyone that finds it acceptable to kill something just because it is making an annoying noise is someone who should never be allowed to own a firearm
Hi What are the sights you are using?
Throw that patch material away and start using a better weave. that looks like cheese cloth. Mine has NEVER looke that ragged out even when I shoot way too much powder to test loads.
Did you stop making videos.
How fun I love my 50. You did a ton of cool mods awesome
Question : Just how the He .. er I mean how the HECK can You even SEE that target through those sights , much less hit it ?! I'd have to mount the spoter scope to the rifle to stand a small chance !!!!
DEAD EYE !!!! No doubt in MY mind !!!! ( ever considered a little Crowd control for Texas )
I found a .36 cal . for sale at auction . I bided $500.01 & was promptly out bid ! I have eight days to figure out what I want to bid on it again. Thid old T/C Hawkins Seneca STILL looks new ish ! What do You think one of them that looks like the gun I described would be worth at auction ( 14 bids last time I looked ) ?
Late to the party, I appreciate someone doing long range work with a traditional muzzleloader. Do those bullets group well and stabilize at 100&200 yards just fine? I want to eventually have a really precise hunting Hawken rifle, I wouldnt be throwing bullets at animals beyond 200 yards.
In my limited experience this is not necessary. The right material, the right thickness and a decent bore are all you need. In my view.
The 1/48 twist is good under 80 grains of 2f powder. Get you a Bill moody barrel 58 cal 180 grain 2f black powder with felt wad and cloth patch. Twist is 1-96 36 inch barrel 1 and1/8 across the flats. You will love it at 200 yards. Keep up the good work.
