Awesome shooting Lewis and thanks for testing them. I have had excellent results with them thus far in my Traditions Deer Hunter sidelock and my TC Renegade.

How are they to load? I have a renegade also. They look promising.

@@brandonmahnke3716 in my Renegade they go down the bore with almost the weight of the ram rod. I have also rolled them between 2 mill files and they will load a bit tighter. I didn't see much difference when doing this in my Renegade, but my other sidelock I did.

I went back to be sure... the rifle is a 1:48 twist barrel. A basic, stock T.C. barrel. and it shoots great!

Great shooting bullet, and at 278 grns I'm sure they will do a number on anything they hit especially being a hardcast.

You really think the Lee R.E.A.L bullets are that bad? I've had good luck with them inside of 100 yards. I have regular iron sights on my black powder guns so at a 100 yards a 6-8 inch target is the same size as the front sight. I'd be curious to see a video of accuracy testing the Lee real bullets.

  • @StevenMMan

I can't speak to the accuracy of the lee real bullets in a rifle, but I speak to an out of the box use for the .45 cal . The advertised diameters of it didn't make sense. Curiosity killed the cat, and I ordered the .45 250 gr real bullet mold to test. Not in any of my sidelock rifles, but in my cap and ball revolvers. My Remington, and standard colt replica's are a no go. Ruger old army it is a perfect fit function, and accuracy. For of the gun cylinder tower loading for the colt Walker these work well. These bullet/powder/revolver combo makes for a solid load. I have achieved 968 fps average out of the ruger, but have not tested the walker as of yet. I now have both the 250, and 200 gr for revolver use. I am currently designing more bullet for cap and ball. I started with the .31 cal first as these have the least conical options. I have 8 total molds for the. 31 ranging 63 gr up to 90 gr of 6 different designs. 4 .36 cal designs 126 to 150 gr. So I have a lot of testing to do this summer.

revolvers aren't muzzleloaders, they're chamber-loaders, and their loading mechanics aren't the same as a muzzle loading rifle. The diameter of the bullet on a revolver must be oversized prior to being seated in the chamber in order to ensure it is sealed, on a Muzzle loader, you would have to fight the oversized bullet down through the grooves, damaging it in the process (why REALs don't generally shoot all that well in their intended hosts, if it's soft enough to get down without damaging it, it strips off the rifling while loading, normally). Muzzle loading guns are normally best-served with bore sized projectiles, and are upset into the rifling upon ignition of the powder charge.
REAL's are, however, a decent option for the use you are using them for, as the tapered design achieves a similar function to the older, heeled bullets normally used in percussion and early cartridge revolvers. The heel, or taper in this case, helps center and line the bullet up with the chamber/bore, so loading them crooked is less likely (one of the chief complaints about using non-heeled bullets in percussion revolvers)

@@wildrangeringreen thank you for the refresher course. I started shooting muzzleloading rifle and shotguns in 1972, and cap and ball revolvers in 1976. About 1981 a started loading 240 grain gas check bullets Elmer keith bullets into my Remington as part of my Wyoming combo of .54 caliber percussion sidelock muzzleloader and my Remington on my side as my grizzly protection. Muzzleloaders and black powder is still my favorite. I shot competition for many years though primitive round 10- 250 yards. I have to compliment Idaho Lewis for his capabilities at rangers I never thought of. Wish had I would have enjoyed it. For me it's too late as a stroke has impaired my vision and stopped open sight shooting, gunsmith, and custom handloading for me. So you won't see me shooting at Pinedale, bear river, or fort Bridger any more, but it is ok for when you do see me I'll be the one speaking in lakota, Arapahoe, shoshone, sign, and recently learned odawa/ojibwa. My vision is shot, however my mind has not shut off.
