    Most people now days have no idea how to load and shoot and tune a real muzzloader round ball gun. Been doing it since 1976. U r very good in this craft

    And I've always heard the 1:48 twist had questionable accuracy potential. Thanks for putting that lore to rest. I'm really enjoying your videos. Thanks for your efforts.

    Hey Idaho just wanted to thank you for the videos. You’ve inspired me to get into traditional blackpowder rifles. I have a TC Encore and shoot sabots with Hornady 44 cal xtp pistol bullets through it. It wears a Vortex 16 power scope and better than MOA with it isn’t a problem. Until I saw your videos I wouldn’t have believed that traditional muzzleloader’s with open sights could match that type of accuracy. I have since bought a TC Hawken and Renegade both 50 cal and a Traditions Crocket rifle in 32 cal and also a Lymans Great Plains Flintlock with both a 54 and 50 cal barrel. The Hawken is outfitted with a globe front sight and a Lyman SML peep for target shooting. The Renegade has a fiber optic front sight with a TC peep and is my hunting rifle. My Lyman GPR has the standard sights on it for now. I don’t shoot near as well as you but I am so glad I saw your videos and decided to give traditional blackpowder rifles a try. I can’t wait to hunt deer this fall with either the Renegade or the Lymans Flintlock.

    Great video! I have .58cal Cabela's from about 30yrs ago I inherited from my passed on Dad- - As far as I can tell it's never been shot as he had many & as old as he was he mainly was shooting .45 & smaller Flintlocks but always (from reading opinions) heard 1/48 twist wasn't too accurate lot these writers talked about getting after market barrel w/ different twist rates for bullets or balls & 48 rate was just compromise- Well Sir your just made them Crow feed w/ this video- Glad I found your channel to learn from - Thanks Million!

    I have the same rifle. My dad got it for me when I was 14 for free because the previous owner’s son had supposedly dry balled it. We had no idea of the powder charge or projectile type so we were wary of conventional methods and never succeeded in clearing it. I’m 36 now and finally removed the breech using heat. I placed the breech over flame and retreated to a safe place and distance. It never fired and I discovered a cleaning jag and no powder charge! I hope it shoots as good as yours!

    The gun was designed for the .490 round ball and will shoot the round ball just as accurately as the bullets. You cannot go wrong shooting a pure lead .490 round ball. I have been shooting black powder for over 50 years and if you shoot enough you will eventually understand why most people with a lot of experience go back to a pure lead round ball in their muzzle loaders, even the pistols shoot better and more consistently.

      My .54 T/C Hawken does not shoot round ball well at all and I've tried multiple combinations of ball , patch and powder weight and granulation. It will however shoot 1-1/2 inch groups at 100yrds with the 425gr Hornady Great plains conical and 100 grains of fff.

    I just bought a Thompson Center Renegade 50cal with the original TC Renegade Peep sight on it. It's in really good condition, I also have a TC Renegade 54cal & a TC Hawken 50. I bought the Lymen 57 peep sight & a Taylor & Company peep for my other Hawken rifles, but I haven't installed them yet. I also have a new in box Pedersoli Traditional Hawken Target 50 & a CVA Hawken Supreme 54cal with chrome lined bore, & a Investarms Bridger Hawken 50 I started getting into Traditional muzzleloaders a few years ago and they are addicting to say the least lol.

    I bought thar exact rifle in 1990...and a white mountain carbine with a 1-21" twist...the renegade was perfect for hunting with a 1-4 scope and shooting 2 patch round balls ..work up your group with different patches and 495 and 490 balls..your going to get a spread of 2 to 4"..I settled for 2" spread...I big white tail getting hit with 2 round balls is deadly and quick...it also grouped green 50 caliber sabots with a 240 44 caliber xtp like a center fire rifle...somewhere many years ago I researched double round balls and they used that in military and hunting...it's perfect for hunting..since 1990 I ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS took two muzzle loaders hunting in the tree stand and two scouting...a second shot takes you a minute or two my second shot takes me 2 seconds

    The 1/48 twist is good under 80 grains of 2f powder. Get you a Bill moody barrel 58 cal 180 grain 2f black powder with felt wad and cloth patch. Twist is 1-96 36 inch barrel 1 and1/8 across the flats. You will love it at 200 yards. Keep up the good work.

    Hello Idaho. I have another idea for a test you could do.
    You should compare the accuracy of cast balls with sprues compared to perfectly round swaged balls. I think that would be very interesting.

  • @thomasozminkowski2589
    @thomasozminkowski2589 Před 7 měsíci

    Based soley on my experiances the 1:48 twist is a compromise. Its said to work equally well for patched round ball and conicals. What ive found is that it does But its more finacky/fussy about charge and with the weight of projectile. Also rifling depth is a concideration. If you can find a load for round and a load for conical thats great you have options. It took me a whole summer and 3lbs of powder to get acceptable performance for both.

  • @reloadNshoot
    @reloadNshoot Před 8 měsíci

    I would think that the use of the peep sights add to the precieved acuracy of any rifle over any rear notch and front blade. Its simply takes some of the error away. Several 3 or 5 shot groups will tell you truer results in acuracy over a single group.

    I bought a used but never fired Traditions bare bones Springfield Hawken rifle for $50 bucks, I assume it is 1:48 twist .. Shooting 70, 80, and 90 grain charges of 2f Goex, 490 ball with a .015 store bought pre lubed patch I got under 1 inch groups at 40 yards .. I then tried some Hornady 385 grain Great Plains Bullets and got the same results without any sight adjustments .. Best $50 dollars that I ever spent ..! Does anyone know if they make any after market rear sights for Traditions ..?

      Going to a range soon that has longer distances, 50 and 100 yards, the Springfield Hawken has no rear sight elevation adjustment, I had to file a bit off the top of the front sight .. It also has an internal trigger adjustment ..
