17 HMR for crows and rabbits out to 150 yards. Foxes head shot only out to 75yards. 22 WMR for crows and rabbits out to 125 yards and head shot only foxes to 100 yards. The 22 WMR hits with more effect as it has a higher impact number of bullet weight multiplied by bullet impact energy than the 17 HMR at all ranges. I would like to see you measure the enclosed volume that each bullet makes when hitting a clay block. You would need a bigger or deeper clay block to capture the 22 WMR bullet according to the results from this video. I know that the bullets with more momentum disrupt more tissue than bullets with lower momentum, but it would be nice to "quantify" the results to discover how much better these high moments bullets behave. Bigger animals generally require higher momentum to kill them quickly therefore humanely.
Nice video. I think keeping it simple teaches us more as we are not overwhelmed with too many details.

Watched a lot of vids comparing these 2 so I knew the .22 would have more power but it seems overall due to bullet design the .17hmr is a bit more accurate . I prefer .22mag overall because you can also run it in a pistol.

    Ohhhh, GREAT topic/timing!
When I 'Retired' my EDC, Ruger P85 (9mm for those who don't know), for the Ruger 57, ALL my neighbors thought I'd lost my mind. "THAT teensy-tiny little caliber, vs your 9mm?!" was their common retort.
Then I showed them via every target-of-opportunity we could obtain (And the refrigerators with their assorted fruits/veggies AND meat (ty Mr. Harrell for that one!), suffered dearly!), up to real gelatin blocks, just how well the 5.7 performs.
Got ahold of their Ruger LC Carbine, next, and that's even bettah!

Well they both performed as designed, the 22WMR uses a heavier bullet construction and is probably the perfect 100 yard Coyote rifle and the 17HMR is designed to take the heads off small critters like Rabbits, Squirrels and Prairie Dogs.
    But both are deadly 😮

You need to try the 20gr Game Point by CCI in 17HMR vs a 40gr Hollow Point in 22WMR, they will be the most similar in terms of terminal performance they're both designed to expand and penetrate where as most 17s are designed to go pop!

Hello Mr. WHO_TEE_WHO another excellent video showing the difference in energy transfer down range. I tend to agree, close up hunting (inside 100 yards) either cartridge should perform about the same, in as much delivering a one shot kill. However, I believe that at 100yds + that .17HMR may give you a bit more accuracy on small game. That's due to it's lower BC and higher muzzle velocity. I always enjoy your videos keep it them coming please.

Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy.
This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR.
This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.

I have both, love them both, had 22mag 15 years longer so it's been around and done way more. I will die with it.

22 h r is still superior to the .17 but there fun the consistency of the 17 is probably better

Great comparison, and now that we know that the 22 magnum will penetrate deeper, I knew it would, and I regret ever selling my 22mag, how’s about you do the same with the 22, but/and you put a couple water/milk jugs behind the clay to catch the boolot.
Thanks for another great video Adam

I have a marlin 22 mag with a very heavy barrel in stainless i bought for $210 back in 92. It has taken literally thousands of varmmit including jack rabbits fox coyotes pigs raccoon and exotics in west Texas. Has an old style red field tv view 3x9 scope that hasn’t been touched in 30 years. If i had only one gun to choose from out of my 35 or so guns this 22mag would be my choice. Been through everything and has never failed once or ever been knocked of sight. One heck of a good gun and a blast to shoot !

Depending on what you are wanting out of any bullet you are firing. Look at this, the 17hmr used 100% of it energy in that block. Sometimes that’s what you want.

I enjoy your vids and liked this comparison. I would enjoy seeing the same, but including the 5mm Remington Magnum rimfire. I have been shooting one for years and in my opinion and experience, the 5mm far exceeds the ability of the 17 and 22 WMR. I look forward to the video! Keep up the great work!

That was definitely a win for the .22 mag in my book. The entire .22 block was pushed outward compared to the .17 block. It looked like the internal cavity was larger overall with the .22 as well, but may have just been camera angle.

22 mag for coyotes, 17 hmr for squirrels, and both for a fun day plinking with the family. Each cartridges have a valid purpose but both are just a lot fun.
