  • If bigger is better, the .22 Mag should be in every gun safe alongside or in place of the .22 Long. But it isn’t. So where does this small but effective rimfire shine? Listen in to see if you need to add this mini-magnum to your cartridge repertoire.

I love 22mag. I ran into an old combat vet in Southern AZ. We were hunting deer, he was tending cattle for a lady rancher. He procured access to the ranch for me and a buddy.
He lived in an old line shack and didn't have much. We got to taking about cartridges and discovered he didn't have a firearm at all out there! Keep in mind this is cartel country, coyotes javelina, rattlesnakes etc...
I asked him if he could have one gun out there what would it be? His answer was quickly "bolt action 22mag".
My buddy and i on the drive home after the hunt were discussing what we could bring for this guy when we came back for quail season.
When we got home i came across a savage 22mag bolt gun on clearence at the Walmart for under a $100 bucks. Needless to say we had one happy vet that Christmas.

I don't own a 22mag. nor do I know anyone that does.. But I will tell you that I've had a handful of conversations with some bad folks, that have poached a lot of deer. They all used .22mag with head shots. They do make some nice guns for the cartridge, but I hand-load. So there's a lot more appealing cartridges, that can be fine tuned for whatever level of performance I'm looking for.

I’ll share a personal story that deals with EDC and why something smaller, like 22 LR or 22 WMR might be a good option. In October I randomly and suddenly was afflicted by debilitating pain in the muscles in both of my arms as well as weakness, which eventually spread to my hands causing a lack of dexterity and strength…to the point where it was a struggle to even manipulate the door knob of my front door of my house to enter/exit. My EDC handguns were useless to me…so at a time when I felt the most vulnerable I’ve ever felt, due to not having the strength to defend myself if I wanted to, add on top of that not being able to rack the slide on a semi-auto handgun or be able to pull the trigger on a double action only snub nose revolver. Plus I didn’t know if I could grip a handgun, even a 9mm or 38 special, enough to deal with the recoil, because of my arm/hand strength issue. What I found I could do was load, rack the slide and shoot a Ruger LCP II in 22 LR and I could open the cylinder, cock the hammer and pull the trigger of a Ruger LCRx revolver in 22 WMR and I could handle the recoil. So, although these rounds might not be ideal for EDC, there are times where for some they might be the only option. It gave me some confidence back that I could defend myself and my family if the need arose. Eventually I was diagnosed with Lyme’s disease and treated and I’m mostly back to normal now, but it was an eye-opening experience and one I don’t take lightly anymore. During that time I did a lot of research regarding 22 WMR self defense rounds and found that some of the options like the Speer Gold Dot and Hornady Critical Defense are actually pretty decent from a penetration perspective and they even get some expansion. Food for thought and hopefully it helps people to maybe stop and think before just dismissing these cartridges as EDC options…because for someone it’s the best they can do.

@@sock979 I do appreciate the feedback and honesty at the time I thought about that handgun. The problem I was having at the time was definitely hand strength for racking a traditional semi-auto slide, but also I wasn’t sure how much recoil I could manage with my decreased grip strength. This is why I had been researching rimfire CCW options.
As I stated in my post, I was treated and I’d say I’m 90% back to normal. I can use my semi-auto handguns and can use a revolver in double-action without needing it to be in single-action. It was a humbling experience and one I won’t soon forget. I just wanted to post something to add an argument for those that couldn’t handle something more than a 22 WMR or even a 22 LR.

A big benefit of 22WMR for me is that there are times and places when hunting small game is limited to rimfire or shotguns, and it lets me take hogs too. For instance, if I'm out squirrel hunting on a WMA in Georgia, and happen across hogs, it's legal to take them but it has to be with a weapon that's legal for whatever is in season like squirrel. It's pretty niche, but it basically just gives you the most spread and options starting at the smallest critters up to something hog sized.

IMO it’s probably the most underrated cartridge ever. It’s soooo much more than the 22LR. Extremely versatile and super easy to shoot. As an older person I was looking for the LCR snubby wmr to carry for SD, like your grandfather. It wasn't available at my LGS so I bought the 3". For EDC I'd rather have the WMR over a 22 lr.

I just picked up a great little Sako Quad Hunter in 22WMR and love it. 22WMR gives better performance than a 22LR without being overkill in recoil, sound and meat/pelt damage; so it left me wondering why have a 22LR.. also the 17HMR might be fast but the small projectile sometimes feels a little lacking. The 22WMR with a 30 grain projectile is fast and left me wondering why have a 17HMR.

My favorite part of the .22mag, is if I’m walking around the woods or the farm, instead of having a long cumbersome .22lr rifle with me, I can get pretty much the same ballistics and performance as a .22lr from a rifle as I would a .22mag in a 6” revolver. The .22WMR is the silent underdog of the rimfire world for me. I’ve owned bolt guns and lever guns in it, I’ve always been impressed with how well it works, it’s powerful but not too powerful. Great effect on targets out to 100-125yds with considerably less noise or potential to cause unnecessary damage to property than the .223 REM. Everyone sings the praise of the .17HMR but what deters me from it is even when you use 20gr solids, it just won’t penetrate, .22WMR at 70yds will go through both sides of a coyote’s chest and expand a marginal amount in the process

This was the caliber of my first firearm I purchased. Bolt action Hvy barrel Savage with thumbhole stock.
I bought it more than 10 years ago because it was cheap, accurate, could shoot all day, could plink at more distance, could effectively dispatch varmint at more distance, won’t destroy hides, bullet variety is vast and ammo was cheap and available.
Right now Dec 2022 (for ppl reading in the future) I’m not sure the ammo cost makes this caliber as viable. The price of a box of 50 has doubled since 2012. Was $12 CAD in 2012, is $24 CAD in 2022. I actually picked a 22lr in 2022 so I can plink without worrying about ammo as I pick up 500 at a time i stead of 50.
I still got lots of use from my 22 WMR this season though. It’s far superior to the 22lr at killing prairie dogs, it’s still discreet and I can target shoot much farther. I’m out west and 22lr doesn’t have enough power for most critters at the distances you’ll encounter them. People are dropping Coyotes with 1 bullet at 160m with 22 WMR in my province. If it’s under 150m you pull the trigger. Coyotes out east are a lot bigger, so probably not out east.

Just picked up a Rossi LA synthetic in 22WMR to keep in my pickup when camping or riding around on my ATV. I put a red dot on it. You're right, It's a no man's land round, but I just like it. It's a little more thump.

Just bought a Ruger Precision, chambered in the .22 WMR. My hoped for raccoon solution.

My buddy and I have used his RPR in 22mag several times for coyotes, and foxes. Has worked well every time 🤘. Winchester or Hornady 30gr V-max rounds at roughly 2200fps.

It's a far better hammer for raccoons, foxes, etc. than either the 17HMR or the 22LR. As much as I like and respect the 17 HMR for it's accuracy, it is neither fish nor fowl as a hunting load IMO. Hurts me to say that. Totally insufficient for coyotes, demands a head shot on squirrels... which is best anyway so FWIW. The 17HMR is FANTASTIC for introducing new shooters to precision shooting beyond 22LR ranges. Golf balls at 125yards+, etc. YMMV.

I had one several years ago and it hit much harder at 100yds than my 22lr.

I have a 22 Mag and 17 HMR in identical Marlin bolt actions. The 17 HMR is impacted so significantly more by wind drift. The 22 Mag has more killing power.
Taylor and Company folding 22 WMR / 20 gauge over under is a great carry around gun.

Savage 93 FV-SR very accurate short handy rifle. Ready for a suppressor I carry it for the woods. Light weight and allows me to make longer shots than are ethical with 22LR on small game.

I love my .22WMR. I have a Magnum research. 22wmr Magnum lite. It's basically a ruger 10/22, it even uses ruger bx mags. I like to shoot rim fire and I have a few .22lr's and a .17Hmr so I wanted to get a .22Wmr to complete the rim fire trio. I wasn't really expecting it to be as good as it is and it's my go to for foxes or ground hogs now. I used to grab my 22lr ruger 10/22 but since getting the wmr It's become the go to. I feel like it's a great round for varmints especially when you have some close neighbors where my 5.56 would be a little to much gun for the job. It also a lot better built gun than the newer ruger 10/22's. It runs great and it's almost as good of tack driver as the .17hmr just not as flat of a shooter.

I bought the S&W 351c about a year ago. Love it. I do carry it at times as it is very small, light, and easy to conceal. The Federal Punch round is right up there with the Hornaday Critical Defense for expansion and penetration. I would never shoot 100 yards. It's a close quarters round.
I'm an old fart now, so a lighter and smaller gun is appealing. While a 22, the loudness is more than a 22lr. It turns heads at the range. Ammo is affordable at Walmart $16.99/50rounds

Great video: both my neighbor rancher and I carry 22wmr pistols when we check fence. It’s simple and does the job. Wind really effects 17 HMR at 50 + yards. I own a FN 57 and while it’s nice the ammo is .60 a shot is prohibitive. Ruger, Kel-Tec, Walther now make 22 WMR pistols.
