I don't really care if it's "more powerful or more better". It's a nostalgic round for me. As a kid, my dad had a Marlin tube fed .22 mag with a scope and a gold trigger and I thought that was the coolest thing ever. I still think it's a great round. Yup- pistol length barrels aren't enough to make a significant difference in velocity between the two, which is why I've ever been interested in a .22 mag hand gun.
The RIFLE, on the other hand, provides the opportunity for the magnum to burn up all that propellant in the long case.

Never used it much, maybe a hundred rounds. I like my .22 Hornet as a medium round but, it could be hard to find even before the Flumegedon. I've recently gotten an itch for a 3" Ruger LCRX in .22WWMR. The only reason I don't own an American Ranch is I could never decide on caliber. You may have just solved that.

Good video! I like that you took and posted numbers for these old eyes to see. I’ve been a fan of the WMR round for a while and am in the market for another. I currently have .22 Hornet, .222Rem, 22-250, and .243 calibres for truck guns and hunting varmints. The .17WSM we have is obsolete because rounds are too expensive. It was a great round because it was accurate and cheap, but will be moving to a different .17 or going to the WMR. Both can be cheap to shoot and I like the added bullet weight of the .22 mag and my targets are usually less than 100 yards . I’m leaning towards the .22WMR and the Ruger american, but I’m stuck on a scope choice. I like a good quality fixed in 4 or 6X like Leopoldo or nikon, but am aghast that these options are scarce these days. I wish some of you kind folks would weigh in here! What would you do? 😉

Used to LR especially bulk ammo was bad about having duds. Now lately I have been shooting thousands of rounds of bulk LR through my CMMG Conversion for the AR and I have had virtually no issues. Ironically the only failure to fire was with a CCI. Most ammo shot was Federal Auto Match and Remington Golden Bullets. Their velocities vary wildly but, they are going bang. It could be the hard hit the AR trigger group is putting on them that has made fails to fire a none issue.

The pistol test may be flawed in that you are likely to lose velocity with an interchangeable pistol such as the Rough Rider. Your chamber is not going to be a precise fit the mag round. It is a decimal smaller because it is not a heel projectile.

I’m more curious how the 22 mag feels vs 22lr. Sometimes when I shoot 22lr out of my 8lb Henry golden boy, it feels more like a BB gun or air gun. Does the 22mag feel more like a real gun so to speak, does it have a big difference in sensation?

Noticeable, but nothing major. Definitely not on par with .223. It's basically a middle ground below 5.56 but above .22LR. I've noticed the same things about the Golden Boy and .22LR. 🤣

first time i ever used a .22 wmr was when i heard a raccoon killing one of my chickens on christmas, ran out in the yard in my underwear with a .22 colt revolver and spotlight at 3am and fired twice at the raccoon. pretty sure the 2nd shot hit it, it was never seen again. i was pleasantly surprised that it actually had some zip to it for such a small round.

Of course I'm using rifles though. Crono only tell you #'s....go hunting with 'em that tells the tale. I have a old marlin .22 mag and a savage .17hmr no need taking a .22lr for ground hogs. And for over 200yds I have a savage m12 in 22-250. That will turn a ground hog into squishy sausage.

But really only good for varmints. However a 17 hmr in a pistol would be really interesting to see the numbers & compared to 22 or & 22 mag. My guess is it would have a terrible time cycling a semi auto action & the energy would most likely be down a fair bit. Still I’d love to see it.

That's kind of slow on the 22 mag. My 18" semi auto CZ512 gives me a velocity of right around 1900fps. Maybe I had a fast lot? I dunno.
Personally, I have a 22LR bolt gun and it pretty much is just a trainer for people these days. The CZ512 can do everything it does but at a longer range. The form 1 can I have makes it hearing safe in small bouts with supersonics, and the Winchester 45gr subsonic (now discontinued) does what 22LR does and just as quiet. I even load a cycling 50gr subsonic with the 50gr gameshok bullet in A22 cases with red dot (I'll be trying trailboss soon).
I also have a 22 K hornet, and I love it, but between the semiautomatic 22WMR and my 223 Remington chassis bolt gun, I have my 22 caliber needs filled.

  • @user-vj4yc8kc6v

    Better at what ?
If better means most powerful or longer range, then 22 wmr is better.
... But if better is light weight, portable , quiet and lower recoil, 22 lr wins.
There's more to a caliber than how powerful it is. Once you have enough power, more is kind of meaningless.

Not all single-action 22 revolvers are created equal. Ruger Single Six convertible with the 6.5-inch barrel averages 1403 fps with the exact same .22wmr ammo. Heritage just isn't worth it. How they manage to drop 300 fps over the Ruger is beyond me.

For what purpose. Shooting rats and rabbits on the farm a 22short is enough. For personal carry the 22WRM Thunderstruck is awesome. Just avoid the Mk.1 as it was picky on ammo sometimes causing the bullet to tumble. The longer barrel on the Mk.2 solves this.

The 22 LR & 22 magnum are fantastic little cartridges . Both have large verities of ammo including subsonic. The 22 LR can be fired in the 22 magnum with fantastic results if using a 22 mag case as a chamber sleeve . ( cut off the rim ) also the 22 magnum can be custom loaded with std .224 rifle bullets & set up for longer range use ! If one wants to go to that trouble. Check out this video of shooting the 22 magnum at 1000 yards czcams.com/video/Em-7LoXAp-w/video.html .

@@ArchetypeofMan hahahaha my pleasure 😁. I did a video a few weeks ago on my channel about the 22 lr in the magnum. There’s no footage of actual shooting because I’m in Australia & we have gun hating police & media. The results shocked me with how well they shot. My misus has a custom 22lr squeeze bore in the shop atm , squeezing std factory 22lr down to .204 , in a 1:8 twist 22” barrel. Allegedly should gain 150-200fps , increase BC & SD , penetrate deeper & is more devastating on target from the higher rpm from twist rate & increase in velocity & use of soft lead . Really can’t wait to see how the aguila 60 gr go & some of the monolithic copper hyper velocity as well . Btw meant to be a 200 yard bunny rifle 🤔
