Exploring Southend's Nazareth House Before Demolition
This video documents numerous visits of ours to Nazareth House in Southend-on-Sea; a Victorian care home established by a Christian order of nuns. We visited the building numerous times in its final days as it gradually closed to film this video, before making a final visit during its sad demolition.

Well the dog rolled around in an area that had recently been used for explosive testing. The dogs come back and layed on our stepdads jacket rolling around as dogs do, and when he went to the airport he set off the detectors and they bundled the old boy thinking his his breathing machine was a bomb.😂😂😂

I can see some of the things I worked on in the video. The nun who was running the place at the time, used to spend money like it was going out of fashion.

There are plans of this lower Hope battery available on the internet. What you were looking at was the base of the gun emplacement. On top of it were once the ammunition rooms and other gun-related buildings. The plan I saw looked like they were constructed from steel. These were all removed, probably for scrap, leaving only the strange looking bases.

It seems that anything that holds any historical or architectural merit or significance in Southend and the borough, gets knocked down eventually. Usually replaced with something entirely uninspiring. We honestly must have one of the worst councils in the Country! Great video though lads, thank you for that! Always wanted to see inside that place and you have preserved some of it and its history when the town (City😂) couldn't be bothered too.

May I correct you (and your viewers) IT DID NOT TEST atomic weapons like you state at the start, it tested the triggers for them! CLICK BAIT! I worked on the building in the 90s as a roofing contractor ( I had a portable Geiger counter with me, and signed the OSA to work on there (Official Secrets Act)) and at NO TIME did I detect anything above background radiation levels. So I suggest that you do not mislead the public into thinking that nuclear weapons were ever tested on this site!

I worked at Heatherwood years ago. The place itself had a character to it that you became very attached to and the hospital wasn't so big that you wouldn't recognise or see anyone outside of your own team, it did make you feel like you were part of a large family. There were many members of staff who had worked there their whole working lives. Seeing this video is both sad and nostalgic for me. Thank you.

I was born in a house at Elgam Avenue in Blaenavon, and went to school there until the age of ten. The iron works, and the Big Pit, were places that we played in as kids, and one day, I found a small bottle of powder in the disused laboratory at the ironworks, and after smelling it, and tasting it, me and my mates decided to throw it around between us. Later that day, it rained, and where the powder had landed on my skin and clothes, the area became bright crimson red, especially my hair and face and hands. God knows what the stuff was, but my Nanna went berserk when I crept into the house to try to clean up before dinnertime. That was seventy years ago, and the iron works has since been done up, and it has little plaques telling the public how important the place was to the first Industrial Revolution. Apparently the two great inventors Gilchrist and Thomas were doig experiments there too. It's strange to see the place fenced off, as it used to be completely open for kids to play there. I found an old wind-up record player there, took the box off it, and make a whitworth quick return mechanism with a rubber glove filled with plaster of paris attached to it. It became a wind-up wanking machine, which I swapped for a prismatic compass with the school bully, apprently he his the machine under his bed and used it frequently. I always knew that I would one day become an Engineer , and so it turned out, I am still working and hope to continue so, for many more years, after all my Nanna lived to 100 years old.

Without knowing any of the back story. I can promise you that this village is never going to be invested in or redeveloped by the local council. Their only interest in that building will be to shove money into their pockets or one of their friends. As a massive music snob I often give people grief for adding bad music to their vids. Not so with you though, great soundtrack.

Thanks for the video. I worked in St Martins in 2007. It was a gradual closure. When I started half the building was mothballed. I worked on Ramsey ward. Ramsey was a ward for Elderly dementia patients. I then moved to Lang ward (a functional illness ward) this closed while I was there and the patients were moved to Cranmer ward. The average patient was with us for a few months. There was an on-site shop and garden along with a recreation area. In the end community services replaced in patient care and the old part of st Martin's was closed.

I hate it when people refer to Northern ireland as `the troubles` this is political claptrap to save political face, it was a full blown civil war on UK soil. as for the above when i was a Marine we used this street everytime we deployed to the province, one company would be the enemy and the other the security force, we had more casualties there than we did on deployment, neither side would back down and an riot was just that a riot, great fun.
