Stop Health Anxiety: How to Search for Health Information Online | Dr. Rami Nader
Surfing the web for health information can be a minefield, especially if you're prone to health anxiety. Websites, even those that look professional, can contain outdated or misleading content. This can lead to confusion and spiral your anxiety, particularly when searching for symptoms. Search engines can worsen this by prioritizing information that confirms our fears. For example, searching for "anxiety and heart attack" might bombard you with scary results, neglecting to explain the difference between anxiety-related chest tightness and a serious heart issue.
Here's how to be a smarter health information searcher and avoid the anxiety trap:
Broaden Your Search: Instead of focusing on the worst-case scenario, rephrase your search terms. Searching for "causes of heart attack" offers a calmer perspective compared to "anxiety and heart attack."
Explore Different Viewpoints: Curious about coffee? Don't just search for the negatives. Balance your search with "is coffee good for you?" to learn about potential benefits.
Be a Web Detective: Critically evaluate the information you find. Look for authors with medical credentials or reputable health organizations (.gov, universities) behind the content. Beware of websites selling products or using sensationalized headlines.
Seek Evidence-Based Information: Look for articles referencing scientific research published in credible medical journals. Avoid articles based on personal anecdotes or single, small studies.
Remember, the internet has limitations:
Incomplete Information: Online information might not provide the whole picture. Use it as a springboard for further exploration, then discuss your concerns with a doctor.
Individualized Needs: Medical advice should be personalized. Online information can't account for your unique health history.
Diagnosis Requires Expertise: Don't rely on the internet for self-diagnosis. See a doctor for a proper evaluation.
Treatment Plans Need a Doctor's Touch: Don't make treatment decisions based on online searches. Consult a doctor for a safe and effective plan.
The internet is a tool, not a doctor. Use credible sources to learn more about health topics, but always seek professional medical advice for diagnosis and treatment. This way, you can manage your anxiety and reach a state of better health.

Ever wonder why you feel stressed after a bad day at work or sad after an argument with a friend? While situations can influence our emotions, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) suggests our thoughts actually play a key role. This video explores how our interpretations of situations impact the way we feel. Imagine our emotions are like a triangle. One side represents our thoughts, another our a...

    Most doctors won't consider at first that you have health anxiety. I mean If I go to a doctor and tell him I feel dizzy, the doctor will follow the protocol. This is the part where many people with health anxiety get scared, but that's how regular medicine works.

    I learnt not to search on Internet when anxious. I put a note in my planner and review it a few days or weeks later depending on health issue. If it’s still applicable then, I’ll do a quick research (I limit it to less that 20min) and if needed, look for a treatment or call my doctor.

    I have wrestled with obsessive compulsive behaviours ever since puberty. One of them was not wanting my feet to become unclean after a shower on the way to bed. It required me to place a towel in front of me to step on, and then a second towel to place in front of the first towel to take my next step. From age 12 I needed to devote a half hour to get from the shower up the passage to my bed. I don’t know why. No SA, no obvious childhood issues other than my father getting drunk twice a week which was distressing. Panic attacks have punctuated my middle-age but I can say without doubt that adequate sleep mitigates all of the issues I’ve just described.

  • @TwistedSister1234
    @TwistedSister1234 Před 3 dny

    Hearing the doctor’s description of an impending manic episode initially made me want one. I’m so tired of months-long episodes of depression that have no catalyst and abate for no obvious reason that I can fathom, let alone utilise. The inability to sleep that appears to accompany mania made me rethink my position. Insomnia is the gateway to mental anguish. I would not wish that on myself or anyone else.

    • @DrRamiNader
      @DrRamiNader Před 6 dny

      This is used frequently in the treatment of specific phobias, such as driving phobias. It's used in the treatment of OCD, like in contamination OCD. Used in social anxiety to gradually expose a person to increasingly more challenging situations. Exposure is the primary form of treatment for anxiety.

    I realize Dr. Nader that you focus on CBT, which is a different model than somatic experiencing or "psycho-physiological" approaches etc. But in health anxiety, I see a lot of overlap of CBT with "mind-body" (or "unlearning") models. For me health anxiety fuels ongoing mind-body syndrome issues, where my anxious brain keeps creating physical sensations even though there is nothing medically wrong, and the anxiety and hypervigilance over the symptoms just keeps the whole cycle going. CBT helps me cope and/or recognize behaviors that do not help. MBS approaches help me address the underlying stress and emotions that is driving the "symptoms" in the first place.

    So helpful. I struggle with health anxiety and realize I have often confused HA as a Type 1 worry. But when coming to "problem solve", the worry over having this or that health problem...the problem itself doesnt exist :) I suppose the one Type 1 worry with HA is the actual worry about having HA and how it negatively impacts my life. And in that case there are reframing and problem solving that could be done (especially now I am more resourced with information from your channel)

  • @casario2808

    Great information, thank you. It seems to me that HA has another secret weapon: when we worry or catastrophize about physical symptoms for a while (days/weeks/months) and then, predictably, we eventually stop worrying about that particular symptom (the symptom goes away or we just eventually get over the worry), our monkey brains interpret it to mean the worrying itself played a useful role, so its reinforced. This is one of the beliefs I am also challenging, and its based on the 100% true knowledge that with all my past HA "scares", none of them turned out to be anything significant, and in retrospect can see that worrying about it made zero difference, and actually made things worse at the time as well as making me more likely to fall into the trap "next time".
