  • Health anxiety, also known as illness anxiety disorder, can be a constant worry about having a serious medical condition. People with health anxiety may misinterpret everyday bodily sensations or minor symptoms as signs of a major illness. This can lead to significant fear, stress, and interfere with daily life. This video offers a method for managing health anxiety using a thought diary, a tool commonly used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Here's how it works:
Identify the Trigger: Start by pinpointing the situation or event that triggered your health worries.
Record Your Health Worries: Write down what you're specifically worried about and what you fear might happen as a result.
List Physical and Emotional Feelings: Identify any physical sensations you're experiencing, like fatigue, and how you're feeling emotionally, such as anxious or afraid.
Challenge Your Thoughts: Evaluate the evidence for and against your worries. Are there other explanations for your symptoms besides a serious illness?
Consider Alternatives: Imagine the worst-case scenario you fear and honestly assess if you could cope with it.
Develop More Realistic Interpretations: Based on the evidence, what's the most likely explanation for your symptoms?
By working through this thought diary process, you can challenge your unrealistic health worries and develop more balanced interpretations of your body's signals. This can significantly reduce anxiety and fear associated with health anxiety.

Health anxiety is like an annoying person who's next to you all day telling you that you're sick.

It’s the physical symptoms and sensations that worries people often even after getting checked out by doctors

It's the interpretation and meaning put on the physical sensations that worry people.

Yes, that's the problem and worse, it's a snowball effect. It keeps compounding on itself as your body releases more adrenaline as a response to the fear/anxiety.

Mine manifests for loved ones as well as myself. Currently I am worried for my Mom who got tests back for high iron. The doctor isn't worried and wants to test again in 3 months. But I can't accept that so I research. I found out there's a gene for the condition and downloaded my Ancestry "raw data" and plugged it into a 3rd party site. It came back that I have a 70% higher chance of developing a rare and terrible disease I can't even get myself to type. Endless research on reddit and found a lot of geneticists, genetics counselours, etc who say that raw data from ancestry isn't the same as medical grade genetic testing and that there's high error rates. Even if the test would be correct , the math works out that my risk with the 70% higher figured in would be like .47%. SO many reasons not to worry. But I keep thinking "what if.." I don't get bodily sensations or anything, so I'm not sure how this works in my situation.

Can you talk about Cardiphobia when someone has an actual heart disease or arrythmias and how CBT can help, if at all?

Hi Dr. Do you also work with people who actually have health issues and have anxiety from the physical manifestations of them? Can CBT work for this as well? Thank you
