  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after a terrifying event, and symptoms go beyond just remembering it. Re-experiencing symptoms are one aspect of PTSD, causing intense flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive thoughts that transport people back to the trauma. Flashbacks are vivid sensory experiences, not just memories. Imagine a fire survivor feeling the heat and smelling smoke during a flashback. They can be brief or last for hours. Dissociative flashbacks involve feeling detached, while emotional flashbacks trigger overwhelming emotions. Nightmares in PTSD replay elements of the trauma and can be very disturbing. The fear of having another nightmare can lead to sleep deprivation, worsening PTSD symptoms. Intrusive thoughts are unwelcome images, thoughts, or feelings related to the trauma that pop up unexpectedly throughout the day. They can focus on reliving the event, imagining future dangers, or fixating on negative emotions. Finally, reminders of the trauma can trigger emotional and physical responses. Reminders can be sights, sounds, smells, or even locations. Emotional responses can include fear, anger, sadness, or disgust. Physical responses are caused by the fight-or-flight response and can include increased heart rate, sweating, difficulty breathing, muscle tension, nausea, or stomach cramps.

I experienced panic attacks in 2021. Even when I don't have them anymore, I used to feel so vulnerable back then. Now I have flashbacks about my panic attacks and that makes me feel like I'm about to have a panic attack again.
