  • Social anxiety disorder is a prevalent mental health condition characterized by intense fear or anxiety in social situations. Individuals with this disorder often worry about being judged or evaluated negatively by others, which can lead to avoidance of social settings and significant distress. Despite its commonality, there are several misconceptions surrounding social anxiety disorder that need clarification. Social anxiety disorder is not the same as shyness. Shyness is a normal personality trait involving discomfort in new social situations, whereas social anxiety disorder involves extreme anxiety, physical symptoms, and avoidance. Contrary to the belief that it's a phase, social anxiety disorder can persist for years, even a lifetime. Many develop symptoms in childhood that continue into adulthood. People with social anxiety disorder aren't overreacting; their physical symptoms and anxiety are genuine responses to perceived threats, even if there's no actual danger. Social anxiety disorder is prevalent, affecting over 10% of the population. It's not always visible, as those with it often strive to hide their anxiety. While public speaking is a common trigger, social anxiety disorder can affect various social situations, from dating and parties to work evaluations and assertiveness. Social anxiety disorder is treatable, with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) being a widely-used and effective approach. CBT helps individuals challenge negative thoughts and develop coping skills. While avoidance may provide short-term relief, it isn't a long-term solution. Avoiding situations can exacerbate social anxiety over time and reinforce negative beliefs. People with social anxiety disorder display strength and resilience as they navigate a world filled with social challenges, often persevering despite their anxiety. Understanding these myths and truths about social anxiety disorder can lead to increased empathy, support, and improved access to effective treatments for those who experience it.

My social anxiety somehow selective. For example I can easily give a presentation in front of several people, however just thinking about asking someone out paralyzes me.
