  • Climate change is a major topic in the news and on social media. While this issue focuses on the impact of climate change on people's mental health, it's crucial to know that most folks view it as a global emergency. Imagine living in a place you love, but it's changing for the worse. The glaciers you once skied on in the summer are melting, your lush green lawns turn brown due to water restrictions, and you're bombarded with news about CO2 levels and carbon taxes. This can make you feel anxious, upset, or lost, especially if you feel deeply connected to your environment. This emotional distress linked to environmental change is called Solastalgia, a term coined by Glenn Albrecht. It's that unease, sadness, and anxiety when you see your beloved environment deteriorate due to factors like climate change, pollution, or deforestation. Symptoms include grief, stress, a sense of helplessness, and feeling disconnected from your community or environment. Taking action is crucial, such as participating in local conservation efforts. Planting trees, organizing cleanups, advocating for sustainability, and joining educational programs can help you feel more connected and make a meaningful difference. These actions also provide social connections, combatting feelings of isolation. Another key strategy is limiting media exposure. While staying informed is important, excessive exposure to negative environmental news can worsen anxiety. Diversify your news sources, set boundaries for consumption, and seek uplifting content to balance the information you receive. Remember, addressing Solastalgia involves recognizing and managing environmental worries, building tolerance for uncertainty, and challenging unhelpful beliefs. By taking these steps, you can navigate the emotional impact of environmental change and work towards a more hopeful future.

I wonder if some people who worry excessively about it use it as a way to distract themselves from their immediate problems like some people keep solving others problems to forget their own.

Climate anxiety appears to be trending a lot...but it seems to be just a trend. Real anxiety is much more intense. I use books like the one called 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels and the Tao Te Ching for managing when I get anxious.
