Majolica Experiments - Can Painting This Way WORK??
Ann experiments with untraditional way to create Majolica - a process that results in unique, brightly colored pottery that excites many people - especially those from Italy. (Google it) Anyway, it looks cool when you can paint glazes and underglazes onto glazes - you should try it and at least, watch this video. Links to free templates below.

    So why don’t potters paint white slip as the base and paint images with colored slip over that? Then put clear over everything - does the clear always ruin the images and dull the colors, even at lower temps?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 Před dnem

      Hi Lynette. Very good question. I think you even answered it yourself. The clear glaze does change whatever it is applied over. You need to always test ....like I did for this video...and see how it affects the final look. I have had clear glaze make underglaze colors fade out. Other ones it can make streaky. Some colors the clear can make garrish. I dont have much experience working at the lower temperatures, so Im sure it is different but still testing is the best way to go 🙂. Good luck!

    I am currently at NKO in Gouda, The Netherlands. We use a shiny white tin glaze and simple majolica underglaze on Stoneware all the time. It’s actually one of my favourite glazes. It’s important that the tin glaze isn’t too thick, so it doesn’t sag during firing. A tip for applying the underglaze smoothly: add some honey or dissolved sugar to the underglaze. It makes application much easier! Love your videos!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! that is awesome to know. there is not much information over here about using majolica at cone 5-6. I did have a bit of trouble with the sagging, so perhaps a thinner white glaze coating will help...although my glaze doesnt like to be too thin of it is patchy, but I will experiment. Again thanks so much!!..If you are on facebook, I help administrate the Pottery Studio group. I would love to see samples of your work!! Again, thanks. Ann

    Ann--- I use mason stains (MS) for flowers and leaves. I fight with all the greens. Often my beautiful mint green becomes ugly brown once clear glaze is applied. I've tried Amaco clear, zinc free and finally matte clear to maintain the green color. No luck. I mix my MS with b-mix to the desired color value and fire at cone 5. I've checked all of kilns and they're fine. Any guesses or suggestions?

    • @annruel1982
      @annruel1982 Před 9 dny

      Hi Kevin. I havent tried it with the glaze like that. I have tried underglaze in the bisque state, but sometimes I get stubborn areas that have soaked into the clay and I just cant seem to get the clay clean enough. If the piece of pottery is leather hard, you wont deform it....that said, pottery is always at risk of deforming when fired. That is true with all of it no matter what you do to it to decorate it, haha. But once the piece is leather hard, you dont. have to worry about the decorating technique deforming the piece. :-) Thanks so much for watching and I always like to get other potter's tips and tricks.
