    One I’ve generally stopped is sub-occipitals while client is lying supinated. Also, I have approached trigger point work with more specific and much lighter pressure, holding for longer periods of time. One instructor I had in school was big on intense specific pressure. There are a number of reasons it doesn’t resonate with me, one being I’m convinced there was an element of intentional pain infliction that some therapists use to relieve personal tension. There’s also an idea some massage therapists hold that deep tissue involves causing people a certain level of pain. Anterior portion of neck these days I use much broader pressure, and the entire neck I don’t stretch aggressively.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 5 dny

      Bear claws are for everybody! Some possible tweaks would be a lower table (and I know that most portable tables have an obnoxiously high lowest setting), or just throwing those paws around without being so far over your client. You might come to one side for some contacts, or be in a lunge rather than a plank. This will leave your contact more angled than what I was doing in the video, but as long as they're powered by your body weight rather than your strength, it'll feel deep and profound. Play with it, let me know what you think!

    How much pressure should the mother hand apply?

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 6 dny

      My answer for this context (shiatsu practitioners might have a different answer) is: Enough to be comforting. That can range from merely the weight of your arm all the way up to matching the pressure of your working hand. What really matters is how you apply it rather than the weight behind it: If the hand is broad and conforms to the surface of the body, it will feel comforting. If it is placed and removed gradually (think taking an extra quarter of a second as you make or break contact) it will feel comforting and intentional. Being mindful with it will feel a little effortful at first, but it will fade into the background as you use it!

    I started massage school a month ago, making a career change from economic consulting. I just read the preview chapters of your book and immediately ordered it. I suffered from imposter syndrome in my last job, and anxiety and burnout are ever present specters. Just the reassurance that kindness and commitment to improving are enough is what I need to hear. So thanks for that- I'll definitely check out your channel.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 6 dny

      Yes! The imposter syndrome I felt in this field was very much present in my other jobs (and school, etc), and I found that massage was actually a useful place to break that cycle. Once you realize massage is pizza, and all pizza is good pizza, it becomes easier to set those worries aside. For the most part. 🙂 Congrats on your new journey! • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 6 dny

      I'll think on that! But for now my advice is to ignore how bulky and visible those muscles are. Find their preferred pressure, work as you normally do, and you'll do great. If you'd like to talk more about it, join us on the forum (search "massage sloth clubhouse" on Facebook)

    Would you recommend these techniques if someone were sitting in a chair? I want to do my spouse, but don't have a surface to have them lay face down like you showed in the video. I would have to massage my spouse on the chair. Not sure where to start or what to do. But I will try to see if your techniques work. May not be as relaxing.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 12 dny

      My recommendation would be to use a bed, and have them lie down on a pillow long-ways (in other words, the pillow will be under their entire torso and upper hips) with another pillow under their turned head. Their arms could be by their side, or up with their hands acting as that head pillow. From there you can do many of these moves, but it will require your spouse to reposition as needed, or for you to just crawl around 🙂 If you approach this with a sense of playfulness and keep your spouse's comfort in mind, you're going to do great. Here's some work that you can do with someone who's seated, by the way: czcams.com/video/ocioXi-8TY4/video.html

    Thank you for sharing about imposter syndrome. I have taught A&P for many years and my performance anxiety and IS has accompanied me to every class I teach. It even keeps me from seeking more knowledge and experience in my field. I’m actually going to take a year of leave from teaching to focus on massage therapy work. I’m feeling motivated to pursue further education and experiences through my active massage practice and bodywork community that I can bring with me into the classroom if I choose to return.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 12 dny

      Something I'd like to point out (and something that I should mention in a future video) is that I ALWAYS refresh my anatomy knowledge prior to videos, and even prior to teaching classes. You should see me frantically scanning wikipedia, radiopaedia, and physiopedia when it's time to talk about any given structure (even muscles I think I know pretty well). And it's funny how, every time, I learn something new, or find a dozen rabbit holes to go down. In other words: We'll never know everything, and nobody really expects us to. When I was in massage school I really appreciated the teachers who could turn the structure and function of the body into a story, something that I could digest. If you're doing that, you're doing great.

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 12 dny

      Ignore it, mostly! We are all asymmetrical, and the body can usually adapt just fine. If you have symptoms related to your jaw, consider seeing a dentist for further advice, and feel free to keep receiving massage and doing self-massage such as this. Just realize you won't be "fixing an imbalance," but rather reducing the overall tension of the entire area. Things might even out, they might not. If any symptoms you have improve, then you're on the right track.

    How come it’s bad to pop your jaw? I always have to pop the left side of my jaw only, since I was a kid. But only the left side… and it feels so good when I do, like a release. Why do I do this? And is it bad?

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth Před 12 dny

      I'll speak from my personal experience here: I experienced a symptom improvement when I stopped popping and "testing" my jaw. These days my jaw has much less tension, and I don't feel that *need* to pop or test it. In other words, if you don't pop, you might stop needing to pop 🙂 But! If it doesn't seem associated with any symptoms (e.g., tenderness, locking), I say don't worry about it. Bodies are made to move, and your jaw joint is strong and adaptive, made of tissue that is constantly being renewed. Change if needed, otherwise keep doing your thing.
