Abdominal self-massage (for massage therapists and clients)

  • How to massage your own abdomen (and get back into the old massage headspace!). In this video I demonstrate five massage techniques based on myofascial release. While they're all exceedingly gentle, they're very useful for calming anxiety and soothing the stomach.
    0:00 Introduction and disclaimers
    2:09 1st technique: Laying on of hands
    3:32 Massage as sanctuary
    7:17 Mindful massage
    8:29 2nd technique: Sun and moon
    9:27 3rd technique: Pressing inferiorly
    11:12 4th technique: Pulling superiorly
    11:44 Working with hairy clients
    12:54 Other techniques: Sinking in
    As you try these techniques, realize that there is really no "right" hand placement. Our main target here is the fascia overlying the abdominal contents; think of "dragging skin" and you'll be doing it right. Put the fascia under tension and take some slightly deeper breaths, and afterwards you'll end up breathing more freely and calming the tummy right down.
    Want to see how to do these on a client? Check out my video on abdominal massage and the vagus nerve: • Tutorial: Abdominal ma... That one gets more into the nitty gritty of technique, but it's still quite broad and gentle. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    Ian, I appreciate how open you are about everything. I did this on myself as I listened to you then read Psalm 20 how it says "may he send you help from his sanctuary" which was timely. May God heal anyone that suffers from anxiety in Jesus' name. Amen. I think I've held a lot in for a long time, I want to try to do this often. Thank you! stay safe all

    This was such a lovely change of pace from my normal massage practice! I'm very much an "if something's hurting on myself, I've gotta press really hard and then actively engage in every which possible way" type of person, and to slow down and work so softly and kindly on the part of my body I have such disdain for was so soothing and calming and honestly meditative. Thank you for this

    Bless you Ian for the help you've given me over the past couple of years in setting up a practice! it is great to see you are back! You are so soothing, lovely, and sensible! Your comment about sanctuary hits the nail on the head - all is as nothing without offering loving acceptance to ourselves and our clients, it is very healing!
    But as for me: I rushed back to work last week (UK) and forgot my posture what with anything else and have ended up with backache....so I thought I'd remind everyone else to watch their posture and look after themselves!
    Blessings xxxx

    Wow Ian really appreciating this, your channel does actually feel like a sanctuary of sorts to me as a massage therapist. You have taught me so much about the language to use to explain and express myself as a therapist doing deep tissue work. Every time I start getting frustrated with people asking me to just dig in, how they can take the pain, to break down those knots ect, I just explain the way you do and get into sloth mode :) Now I have clients asking me to explain more, or after the massage they get curious about their bodies and different ways of working with it and they realise that digging deep is not the only thing we massage therapists can do :) I also find that even after 3 months of not doing massage, my body remembers and it's even easier sometimes to do certain things. Thank you!

    Hey Ian, glad you are getting back into massage. I'm so excited to get back into it, after watching your back massage video earlier, I was remembered how good it felt to get massages. One time I had a great massage I described my back as me having my back when I was a child. No pain whatsoever. I have kyphosis and scoliosis and it's one reason why I wasn't able to have a career in massage therapy.
    Learned about it after my 100 hours of required time in massages and during the end where I had to do the full day of massages and after 1 and a half massages my back was so painful I even described it as very cold water spreading across my back, and I was big into proper body mechanics and right table height so it was very frustrating. But doing it on my loved one it would just be one massage so that's nice. I could of got into chair massage but my severe ptsd kept that from happening too! But I heard massage therapy is great for people with ptsd (depending on the kind of ptsd), and I feel that would help a ton. So I get to teach her how to do it! She's really excited.
    And there's my book report! haha sorry about that.. I'm just excited to get back into it and your videos have helped spark that a lot. Have a great one Ian! Excited for the next video!

      Sharing/teaching/learning massage with a partner is one of the best things in the world. Have fun with it! And if you ever feel like doing more than the occasional massage, consider doing so under the guidance of a physical therapist. When I hear about that spreading ice sensation, I'm imagining a rolling wave of spasm, which is your body perceiving potential danger and jumping to your defense by creating an internal cast (and being less than gentle about it). If you haven't tried a round of PT in a while, I'm wondering if bringing this specific situation to their attention might allow them to give you a regimen of stretching and strengthening to gradually reduce that response. Anyway, please know that I realize this could be an annoying suggestion on my part, only knowing you from a handful of comments! If you'd like to kick this idea around some more, please join us at the forum (search "Massage Sloth Clubhouse" on Facebook). If not, please ignore everything but the first two sentences of this reply 😁

      Also had a question, what are your thoughts on lymph node massage? Do you have any videos on it?

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  Před 3 lety +1

      @@frankly3498 Manual lymphatic drainage is a cool modality that interacts with the body in ways that other approaches don't. Gentle repetitive strokes that can indeed make temporary changes such as relieving edema. But... the claims seems to be bigger than the evidence so far. I'm willing to agree that it moves lymph, but not that this is necessarily clinically relevant :) In any case, it's something to try and see how it works for you!

    I went back it took about a week to warm up and then some more time to formulate MT for post pandemic humans. I am finding neck shoulders are unusually disregulated and have made a new protocol for most people. Computering and stressing have taken a toll along with not getting out and about. At first I was fearful. We have safety measures in place as well as pre evaluation for covid or recovered Covid Ana we watch for any circulatory symptoms more closely. So far so good since 7/1. People desperately need sanctuary now more than ever. It’s ok to be concerned and even afraid. Do what you feel is best. 🙏🏼🌈✌🏼❤️

    Thanks the video. I notice that you, like me, wear one shoulder higher than the other. What is that, and how do you get rid of it?

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  Před 3 lety

      It's something that I might try to correct if there was pain involved, but I've got no quarrels with painless asymmetry. They just represent little adaptations we've made to the lives we lead. That's something that I find fascinating because of the story it tells, but it's not something I chase after or try to fix.
      If your shoulder asymmetry coincides with pain, it might be worthwhile to institute some stretching and strengthening. This doesn't need to be targeted (in other words, don't feel like you need to do extra on the painful side), because working broadly and generally can result in the nervous system doing its own recalibrations of muscle tone and sensitivity. And if self-directed care doesn't do the trick, you can certainly try massage, but at the same time I'd recommend seeing a physical therapist for a more targeted stretching and strengthening regimen.

    So I am a massage therapist and I recently took a cupping class. I was wondering how you feel about cupping? They say it pulls out toxins. What are the toxins? Where do they go?

    • @MassageSloth
      @MassageSloth  Před 3 lety +1

      Cupping is nice! It creates myofascial traction and stimulates stretch receptors in new and interesting ways, and it's easy on the hands. As for the toxins and whatnot, none of that is true. While cupping does create a localized low pressure environment, all that does is cause pooling in the local microvasculature (the redness you see). While that does cause microtrauma/bruising (avoidable if you work briefly enough or avoid extreme suction), it doesn't have anything to do with the quantity of toxins or congestion or whatever they're selling these days. The human body is alive and constantly refreshing itself with circulation and filtration. More on that in my toxins video: czcams.com/video/HXqzo3F9ktI/video.html

    I remember watching this video some time after you uploaded it. But I kinda feel asleep. In my defense I'm exhausted the majority of the time. But while watching this I noticed that you mentioned having fascia in your abdomen. I thought nothing covered the abdominal area. Meaning I was told that your bones are throughout body. The muscles keep the bones and organs in place. But the area from the end of your ribcage to your pelvis has no bones to protect it. Which is why if you fall, like I did as a child, from the monkey bars onto your stomach you get winded. Which is a very unpleasant feeling because you're struggling to breathe and you're dazed. So if we have fascia in your abdomen then does it mean that fascia covers your whole body? There's this woman named Ashley Black, I've watched her ads on CZcams. She wrote a book called the Cellulite Myth and invented this device called the FasciaBlaster. I thought of buying both the book and the FasciaBlaster but wasn't certain if I should. She has said that there is no such thing as cellulite. That it's really just fascia. And if you use her device over time what looks like cellulite will go away. I'm not a massage therapist, I did think of becoming one before. But I am fascinated by the body and since mine happens to be in pain I look up any kind of stretch or exercise that I think will help. And I've used Tiger Balm, Lidocaine, Icey Hot Patches, capsaicin and frozen wash clothes in attempt to help. But none of those things have helped. I have even thought my body was defective because the 3 epidurals that I've had, the burning of the nerves on each side of my spine, the steroid and lubricant injections in my knees all have done nothing for the pain. I'm even trying to figure out how to stretch whatever that is that makes my butt hurt. It's not the glutes. It's something underneath the glute muscles. Since a disc is out of place it's resting on a nerve. It's causing pain and irritating me personally. I can't recall the name of it. And I'm not sure how to reach it. Is any of this making sense? It may seem like I'm rambling. And I apologize for that. But is there fascia over the glute muscles that need to be moved to stop the pain? Have you heard of Ashley Black? Do you agree with her that cellulite doesn't exist? Do you do phone consultations? I apologize if this was way too much to ask. I wish my Drs and the physical therapist I saw earlier this year had answers for me. My spine Dr, who seems like a nice man, actually told me "Everybody will have back problems? Everybody will have arthritis. Your back isn't meant to last you your whole life." That doesn't seem right. And I live in a small town. So this is why I watch videos looking for answers that have some hope in them. If you have recommendations I'd appreciate it. Again, my apologies for the lengthy comment.

      Just realize that there's no specific hand placement, really no way to go wrong as long as it feels comfortable. Place hands gently on skin, pick a direction to move in, and breathe deeply.
