- My new book is out! It's called Massage Is Weird: massagesloth.com/book/
Here's a fun way to work with the entire shoulder while keeping it in motion. Check out ANOTHER new video on Patreon: / massagesloth
0:00 Introduction
0:36 Bilateral neck/shoulder warmup
1:05 How to drape the arm over your arm
1:20 Moving your body to manipulate the arm
2:01 Petrissage of the trapezius with shoulder elevation/depression
2:35 Petrissage of pec major
3:15 Fingertip pressure into infraspinatus
4:08 Accessing subscapularis, cradling the entire scapula
5:52 Bringing the shoulder into flexion
6:45 Pin and stretch of the teres muscles
7:20 Pin and stretch of pectoralis major
7:45 Smoothing the entire area inferiorly
8:06 Repeat of the sequence in real time
Some notes on working with the shoulder while cradling the client's arm: If you find that the client's arm is "floating" (they're trying to assist or are unable to relinquish control), you can pin their arm to your torso rather than just leaving it draped over your arm. This can potentially feel like being too far into their personal space, so asking first is a fine idea.
This is a great opportunity to be thorough, since you have so much access in this position. Work with anterior and posterior deltoid, all of the rotator cuff, pec major, pec minor, and superior and middle trapezius, all while bringing them into and out of various degrees of stretch! I didn't show too much of this here, but you can extend many of these moves toward the sternum and along the lateral ribs. This all depends on your client's comfort and your therapeutic relationship, so make sure to get informed consent when dealing with potentially uncomfortable areas.
Let me know what you think, and please report back once you've given this a shot! I'd love to do some troubleshooting down in the comments if you have any difficulties.

As always - this is really nice to see how a professional massage-therapist treats his clients. I'm really inspired to try these techniques.
One of the best manipulations of the neck/shoulder/arm I have seen! I will be using this technique with my clients! Thank you!
Inspired me and he makes massage easy too!
You’re doing a great job as always Ian! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!🤩🤩 really need some work in my arms.🙂🙂
Been in practice for 7 years. This was a refreshing lesson. Going to try some new tricks. Thank you!
Hey! Came back to say that I did this today in one of my sessions and got great feedback! My client does a lot of off road cycling so his traps and pecs were holding a lot of tension. This was perfect. Thanks again!
Awesome! Thanks for reporting back 🤗
I have a shoulder injury coming in this morning. Will be incorporating this into my routine and give it a go. She is on the bigger side, so it'll be interesting to see how some of these grips translate to that body type. Great video! Nice to see you again.
You're a great teacher! I appreciate the sharing of knowledge and experience:)
I wish I was on your table! Looks so beneficial. I really enjoy your techniques.
Brilliant - looks so logical yet not what is generally taught. Looking forward to applying this .... and being on the receiving end sometime soon!! Thank you :)
I love the recap at the end. Very practical. Still and always a fan ❤️
Excellent work and can't wait to try some techniques. Thank you!
Thank you for this! I'm always looking for more solid arm/shoulder techniques!
Great video Ian!! Always grateful for your work and sparking our imaginations! Will report back as soon as possible! :D Very excited to try these moves!

Thank you! Looks awesome! Cannot wait to try out.😉
Such beautiful work!! And I am loving the camera angles! Nice video Ian!
Thanks Allison! This was a difficult one to frame properly, so I went with sheer quantity 😁
Amazing. Can’t wait to try. 🙏✨
Wow! I have being missing alot...thank you, have learnt something new! Keep doing this
Awesome videos, It is a pleasure watching you work :)
I absolutely love your videos. They helped me so much while I was transitioning from student to therapist. My only critique is that this may work for men and some women, but as a female massage therapist with a bit more chest it makes it hard to remain appropriate when cradling the arm so close to the chest. I had to keep their arm much further from my body so as not to accidentally brush their arm against my chest and chance them feeling uncomfortable.
That makes sense, I feel bad for not bringing that up! Let me know if you come up with any more adjustments to accommodate, that's important info that I can't experiment with directly. Thanks Heather!
I know this is late but I've asked female clients to use the opposite hand and cup their breast tissue and pull it more center. Especially if I explain what I'm doing and why.
As a woman seeing chiropractic he always says just beforehand is that okay, and then I feel no problem it feels totally therapeutic… I doesn’t feel like a man touching me. It feels all related to the pain that is bothering me all day …..
This was my first thought. I share this dilemma.
My solution is to hold at the clients elbow, laying their hand at my elbow (in a sitting position) This allows me to prevent the clients hand or forearm from accidentally making contact with my body .
Amazing work
Great video. Thank you for sharing!
Love this. You are amazing.
This is so helpful for ROT Cuff work!
love this, thanks!
Thank you! That was very informative!
Thank you for the great videos .
Nice techniques. I'll add that to my Swedish massage. Graduating in about a month. Wish I knew more techniques. Thanks for sharing.
I'm going to try a few of these techniques this afternoon - thank you for sharing (I would sooo love for you to give me a massage) your movements are beautifully fluid & you always teach me something new or give me ideas to develop my own techniques.........
Looks very relaxing
Lovely techniques :)!
Excellent video
always excellent
Thanks for your teaching sir
Great Video
So cool! Thanks
Although it is most probably inappropriate to write this as a comment for an educational YT channel I need to write you at least once that your voice and your face are „handsome“...please continue with your excellent work. Best Regards from Germany
New video awwww yissss
can´t believe there are 2 thumbs down.. this is great work
Now, there are 4 thumbs down!.
Maybe jealousy?, maybe just a mistake, "un dedazo", maybe they have no idea about body movement, fascia work, physiotherapy, so they didn’t understand nothing. Who knows... I learned so much from this guy, I find his work impeccable and not only that, he is a very good teacher with a lovely vibe.
Those people ran out of Jojoba Oil
Now there’s 21
Ian you help me a lot to burst my career. Thanks teacher!!
great massage while stretching.. i love doing that
so many great videos!!!!!
the Teres Major stretch and Minor strip with arm abducted resting in the arm. So good.
Thank You very much for this video i from Türkiye and i am learning from you
I am going to give this a try in a couple of days. I have a client coming in with chronic stiff shoulder.
Just love watching this routine. Your voice calms me down and your flow is inspiring.
PS: would love to see some videos like these with techniques done on bigger, more massive bodies. Sometimes I struggle with finding the right flow if the person on the table is bigger than me😁
Thank you and please keep it up.
Just started reading your book.
Thank you Ioana! And I do hope to have more variety in bodies in future videos, and I appreciate that feedback. I hope you enjoy the book! 😊
@@MassageSloth You’re very welcome! I am enjoying the book very much
so far. Loved the pizza metaphor!
Not only is it invaluable in terms of how you explain things based on your experience and research but your humor is also delightful!
I love your videos than you can’t explain my gratefulness I have chronic pain and have pain all the way mid night 4 am 5 am anytime so I used your videos a lot to learn to self massage myself and basically live…….. I really Mean …… of course I watched lots of videos for my pains massaging but your videos are my to go because of your gentle attitudes and voice and character which just resonates thank you Ian
That's so kind of you, and I'm so glad to be of help!
@@MassageSloth thank you .. I send you my prays when I think of u .. you have made me aware of my body. like, when I feel systematic pain in my body, I sometimes understand where I should touch to feel the muscle pain and work on it with my hands to feel better ... these videos r very empowering. I think all therapists should empower their patients with many tips. empowering the patient enables them to be better and willing to go on .
Great proffesional! Great teacher!
I need this so bad...
Thanks for sharing Ian
Just wondering do you do the whole sequence on shoulder in seating?
Another great video, Ian! Watching you makes me miss being a massage therapist 😭.
Your old prowess will always be there if you decide to come back! And if not, what a great hobby 😊
@@MassageSloth Thank you! You are absolutely right! 💜
great
I have generally bad shoulders this was honestly pretty nice to watch until my shoulder started to hurt in response 😂
Hi, Excellent video!!! do you use a stool with wheels or without for this work?
Thank you! I prefer a stool with wheels so I can reposition pretty frequently. For instance, as I drew her shoulder up into flexion I was able to scoot up toward the head of the table.
What kind of table do you have her on?
Now everyone viewing this video wants to be a massage therapist for 2hrs
How would you do this with people that arent exactly massage puppets? You know who I mean. The ones who straight arm it, move like a robot and hold their arms up, 'help' you move them etc..
I can usually do it as shown, especially if I make my movements unpredictable. In other words, if you do repeated movements, the client might catch the pattern and start to assist. If you make it difficult to anticipate when you'll lean/drag and in what direction, many people will just lay down their arms, so to speak.
Another option, if you can do so while respecting their personal space (just ask!), is to sandwich their forearm between your arm and your torso. For me the arm positioning looks the same, but I draw their posterior forearm into contact with my lateral ribs/upper abdomen for the parts where I'm rocking my torso. When I want to draw their arm downward or otherwise do a stretch, I detach the hold temporarily, then sandwich it again when I resume the rock. This can also work for the upward arm position with some alterations. If this is likely to get into your personal space, you could put a pillow and/or towel between your body and their arm; adjust as needed.
@@MassageSloth I do the same! I try to make my intent and path as transparent as i can, and sometimes quickly explain what i am about to do so they are not caught off guard.
For female therapist...to hold the arm in this position, the therapist's breast area may be brushing against the client's arm! Any suggestions?
Had the exact same problem when I practised on my partner this evening. Not an issue with him obviously but not sure I could adapt to make it more appropriate for the clinic.
If you or your client isn't comfortable with this, you can put a thick towel over your shouldr covering your breast : it creates a " fence" even if it s only psychologicalm it can be enough to create the appropriate distance you re looking after .
Those bi-ceps though!
