Journal clubs: Roles and structures to make them effective
A journal club is not uncommon. But this approach ensures greater preparation, depth of discussion and impact on various levels. Participants take a different role each time:
• chair of the meeting
• presenter, drawing out the essence and significance of the article
• discussant, offering a critique of the article.
The facilitator too adheres to a clear structure, asking questions where necessary and then, only at the end, reflecting on the contributions and proceedings.

Field visit: The how and why of public health research
zhlédnutí 52Před 14 dny
Research is a process of drawing knowledge from and about aspects of life. Early on in the PhD journey, a field trip can teach students about ethics, research methods, data bases, quality control, the potential impact of research and respect for those they engage with "in the field". In this video, students learn how a Health and Demographic Surveillance System works by visiting the Iganga-Mayu...
Spiderweb: A learning game to map social and gender dynamics in health
zhlédnutí 58Před 14 dny
A group reads aloud a case study and - answering the question "But why?" at each stage - they identify the varied factors underlying the health and other issues in this life history. Using string, they spin a physical "web" of these intertwined factors. They take turns to propose strategies to address each factor and, in this way, thread by thread, they dismantle the web. Finally, they discuss ...
Scientific blitz: Evidence-based debates on contemporary health issues
zhlédnutí 90Před 14 dny
In a fast-paced activity, students take turns as presenter and discussant to read a paper over 24 hours, summarize it, dig deeper into the topic and then present or oppose the argument. The rest of the group must also read the material and come prepared for vigorous, evidence-based discussion.
Multidisciplinarity: Learning across fields of study
zhlédnutí 45Před 14 dny
A series of sessions early on along the PhD journey grounds students' understanding of their own and other disciplines. They learn how and why a multi-disciplinary approach is effective in addressing real-world problems. Along the way, they learn key research skills: conducting a literature search, managing references, presenting findings and collectively constructing a conceptual framework.

Work in Progress: Giving and receiving peer critique
zhlédnutí 26Před 14 dny
In their professional lives, researchers must report findings to their peers, to wider academic and scientific audiences and, importantly, to the communities in which they have conducted research. In this exercise, students practise by presenting their interim findings to a multidisciplinary group of fellow students and facilitators. They cannot depend on a shared vocabulary or assumptions - th...
