How To Install Shear Wall Sheathing | DIY Shear Wall Installation |
How to install shear wall sheathing, Installing shear wall sheathing is a critical step in construction that enhances the structural integrity of a building, particularly its ability to resist lateral forces such as wind and earthquakes. Here are the key highlights for DIY shear wall installation.
1. Material Selection
Plywood or OSB: Common materials include plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). Both provide the necessary strength and stiffness.
Thickness and Grade: Ensure the sheathing meets the required thickness and grade for your specific building code and design specifications.
2. Preparation
Inspect Framing: Verify that the wall framing is plumb, square, and adequately braced before installing the sheathing.
Cut Panels to Size: Cut the sheathing panels to the appropriate size, ensuring accurate cuts for a tight fit.
3. Installation
Panel Orientation: Install panels vertically or horizontally as specified by the building plans. Vertical installation is often preferred for shear walls.
Edge Spacing: Maintain the required edge spacing (usually 1/8 inch) between panels to allow for expansion and contraction.
4. Fastening
Nail Spacing: Follow the specified nail spacing for edges and field (interior) of the panels. Common spacing is 6 inches on center at the edges and 12 inches in the field.
Nail Type: Use the recommended type and size of nails, often 8d or 10d common nails, as per the building code.
5. Reinforcement
Blocking: Install blocking at panel edges to provide additional support and attachment points.
Tie-Downs: Use appropriate tie-downs and hold-downs to anchor the shear wall to the foundation and prevent uplift.
6. Inspection
Check Fasteners: Ensure all fasteners are properly installed, not over-driven or under-driven.
Panel Fit: Verify that panels are tightly butted and properly aligned.
Compliance: Confirm that the installation complies with local building codes and engineering specifications.
7. Sealing and Weatherproofing
Seams: Apply sealing tape or caulking to seams and edges to prevent moisture infiltration.
Weather Barriers: Install a weather-resistant barrier over the sheathing to protect against water damage.
8. Documentation
Photographs: Take photographs of the installation process for documentation and future reference.
Inspection Reports: Record inspection findings and ensure any issues are addressed before proceeding with further construction.
9. Safety
Protective Gear: Wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves, eye protection, and hearing protection.
Lifting Assistance: Use proper lifting techniques or assistance to handle large and heavy panels.
Following these guidelines ensures that the shear wall sheathing is installed correctly, providing the necessary strength and stability for the building structure.

What if there is one replaceable filter in the system itself but then 2 of those nasty thick plastic mesh ones that you are supposed to wash every once in a while and put back in? They only seem to stop dust but to me that is not an actual filter...
How much does something like this cost.
Depending on who you hire it can be 15-20K
Well, move it. Ain’t no need to be confused.
Appreciate this video. Currently in the process of replacing a roof. This is helpful with taking a walk on the roof with the contractor
Its Complicated lol
The electrical tape gave it away for me
Water thieves. 2 Lines, 1 Bill.
Service switch
Not metered; owner is stealing water by tying in before the meter.
I have no clue but I'm going to guess is it a duplex
If it ain't broken leave it alone
I agree that roof mounting is risky, especially here in Florida where hurricanes can rip those panels off the roof, damaging the roof. But solar heating for pool water is still a good concept. The answer is to build a ground mounting rack if you have the room for it. I just completed a 750 square foot ground-mounted solar heater system for the pool.
That's not an s trap it's an improperly vented p trap
If I do a coil cleaning/service check up on unit and the armaflex is missing I quote the homeowner to replace it. If they don’t pay it doesn’t get done. That’s not usually included in an a/c checkup
If you want it outside anyone can steal it
I've used expansion fittings on PexA in my own home and it works fine
There's plenty of space and air gaps under the solar heaters for rain water to drain away. The tiedown clamp screw holes in the roof aren't a problem if they're installed properly, the holes filled with caulk before driving the screws. PVC doesn't need to be painted black, so that's not a worry; and at any rate rooftop solar systems are usually plumbed with black polyethylene tubing -- that's what the solar heaters are made from! I speak from Florida experience where we had a solar heating system installed.
Plus the open, unused knockout at the top on the panel. ; )
Recently retired home inspector here. Love your channel. Aren’t those old dishwasher drain air gaps obsolete as long as the drain hose is configured in a proper high loop under the sink before connecting to the waste disposer?
Don’t worry, the concrete patio will break your fall when the railings fail.
If the homeowner had periodic service on this package unit these issues likely wouldn’t exist ; )
When I install these I always use a metal stand that holds it
I bought a house, and the toilet in one of the restrooms was literally loose, and the second on the watertank ( whatever is called) was also loose. And was never part on the inspection report.
That dust will outlast the insulation
So I'm just about to fuck your life up, happy customers need not apply 😅
We identified the issue. Is there a fix?
I bet the static pressure is on point with that octopus pos lol
I’d say it has very much do given it’s money back and then some. Time to repair those minor issues while planning for replacement
Agreed
That’s looks like a service jacket to me. I’d have to look under the metal jacket to confirm asbestos.
Here is another HVAC filter video for you all. czcams.com/video/zhTNJku5M24/video.html
so home depot will have 2 air filter.. i thought you put both in thats what ive been doing doe the last 5 years.. so basically all it needs is one???
In most cases you only need one, are you putting both in the same spot?
It's fine until you need to remove it or it gets damaged.
Try telling that to one of my home inspection clients who have already panicked themselves about buying a home. 😄
@@Therealhomeinspectionauthorityok Give me their number and I’ll tell them that 😂 Any application just about where asbestos was used it’s ok unless disturbed Almost like fiberglass insulation, it’s fine sitting there but disturb it and it’s all in the air These people never got cancer but the person installing it probably did U rarely see this duct anymore, I mainly just see the asbestos white tape on the joints Which is also fine unless u start ripping it off
Almost handyman stuff right there, wowzers
Agreed!
Yeah? And?.... I doubt they are "hiding" the asbestos. Im betting they just wanted to add insulation to the existing ducts.
Sneaky people out there!! Good Catch!
Another reason home buyers need inspections.
Great video sir
Thank you, what did you like a bout it?
I'd like to hire you to build me an ice rink!
Would you like the ice rink in your living room or kitchen?🤣
It looks like the new normal to me.
Great stuff John. Please keep these coming!!
Awesome, thank you for your input. Any highlights about the video that you liked?
HAHAHA Wtf?! Ive seen some shit while I'm doing my installs but that, I have not seen!
Not bad. Just opened a panel today with 2 k&T circuits. There was also a 6/3 splices in the panel for a 120 outlet. They pigtailed a green wire and double tapped a 15
Bigtime Fail!!!!!
Turn the heat on for about 30 minutes to defrost it. Then turn the air back on.
Great idea however I did not want to be liable for all the moisture damage to the ceiling below.
The duct looked great!!
Looks to me like they got almost finished with a job and we're tired of working on it and then cut corners with the end details
Agreed
That osy switch is not accessible. How can you get the cover off with the pipe in the way
If it plays, it stays
😅 looks like spaghetti 😊
Just needs sauce and maybe some cheese?
Looks like Tommy did it !!!
Tommy your fired!
Her nephew Thomas, he's very handy.
What year did his house burn down?
@@geraldshelton1073 About two years, how did you know his house burned down?!
Tear it all out and start over
Agreed
