CANCUN VISITAX EXPLAINED 2024. How to pay & what you need to know to avoid problems at the airport.

Today, we’re diving into everything you need to know about the Visitax - the tourism tax in Quintana Roo, Mexico, that’s been around for a few years now. We have kept you informed with videos about this tax since its inception but there have been some changes and updates for 2024 that you definitely need to be aware of.
When it first came into law they didn’t make it clearly understood at all. They didn’t specify someone to enforce it with any credibility. They allowed scam websites to overcharge people for it. The government website was glitchy. And everyone “passed the buck” so to speak on who was actually checking to see if visitors paid this tax.
After they realized that they have only been collecting around 10% of what's is owed they are starting to pay attention to this revenue stream.
Your travel agent can pay this tax for you on your behalf for a fee but if you want to pay this tax for yourself there are only 2 reliable ways to pay the Visitax.
The first is the official government website. It is www.visitax.gob.mx.
You input the date you are departing Quintana Roo. The number of people in your party. You can add up to 10 people. First and Last name of each person in your group. Birthday of each person. Passport number for each person and a valid email address. Once you have filled out the form you will be redirected to a secure online payment page where you can make your visitax payment using debit or credit cards. Currently they include MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express. It is pretty straightforward. Once your payment is completed you will be provided with a QR code. Make sure you save and then screenshot this code as it will serve as your proof of payment. If you lose your QR code your info will be stored on the government servers for up to one year.
Alternatively you can pay it through the Toronto based company, Travelkore. It is www.travelkore.com. This is an online company that has been contracted and authorized by the state of Quintana Roo as the ONLY third-party payment company. Don’t be fooled by other sites.
The info you input to Travelkore is pretty much the same except when you use Travelkore you have the options to pay in US dollars, Canadian Dollars, or Mexican Pesos. This may help some people avoid currency exchange fees from their credit card company. Travelkore has a great live chat feature that you can use if you have any questions or if you have any difficulty making your payment.
Travelkore also generates a government QR code for you that proves you have paid the Visitax. If you set up a CareKore account your QR code will be automatically added to your CareKore wallet so you can access it when you need it. However, I would still keep a copy of your receipt and your QR code stored in multiple places. Even print a copy just in case you need to prove that you have paid it and you don’t have access to wifi. FYI the wifi in the Cancun airport it sketchy to say the least.
The Travelkore Visitax QR looks very similar to the government QR receipt.
Immigration and security checkpoints have the right to ask you for proof of payment before you can proceed further. They don't have to though because proof of payment is linked to your passport number, name birthday etc.
www.Paxeditions.com posted an article in April of 2024 stating that “Travellers who skip Quintana Roo tourist tax will face “digital tracking,” passport observations: SATQ” (Sujeto a la Tasa Quintana Roo)
Openjaw.com quotes Tim Scurry from Travelkore saying that the State has the legal right to make sure you pay the missed taxes before you enter the State and the State has not waived its right to collect taxes due from the date the law changed in 2022.
All of this basically means that the State has the right to deny you entry until all of your back taxes are paid. They also have the right to add fines to this for non-compliance.
The Visitax isn’t part of all of the already listed extra fees from your airline and resort. It is separate. If you haven’t got a QR code receipt then you haven’t paid it. It is really that simple.
There are no longer visitax kiosks at the airport and those people collecting cash at the bottom of the escalator are also gone.
Thank you for watching. We hope this has helped you. Knowing the different travel requirements and fees as well as how to navigate the airport is important and I want your vacation to be as stress-free as possible.

    To be clear, tho a real tax, there is ZERO enforcements or penalties by state law article 51 for non payment of Visitax, so enforcement is moot, if the did stop and ask you you you to pay (there is no state employees working at the airport to do this however), there is nothing stated in Mexican law regarding consequences for refusal to pay. No fines, no boarding denial, no nothing. Also, the "digital tracking" was completely fabricated by Travelkore, is not true in any way. They made this up to scare people into paying as they have a vested financial interest in travellers paying, Travelkore is well known for posting a plethora of false information, disinformation, and even more misleading misinformation. I suggest taking anything Travelkore says with a grain of salt, and only follow government announcements. Remember; "TRAVELKORE is an official VISITAX payment system that has been contracted and authorized by the VISITAX 'collection agency' appointed by Quintana Roo State". ... NOT The state itself .... .. Unlike parking tickets or any other silly examples, they all have enforcement and penalties, Visitax does not.

    • @newtravelescapes

      It depends what you value most for your vacation. IPB has a better beach but you can only use the facilities of Beach and Del Mar. El Cid guests can use all the facilities at the 3 properties. The beach at El Cid is not as good as Paraiso beach. IPB has more teen activities. El Cid has a small teen club. It really depends on what you value most and who has the best price. I am working on 9 different videos about the whole El Cid properties. I hope to launch at least one per weekend on the channel.

      @@ehsansyed5227 honestly, for me, I would say it is between Iberostar Maya or either hotel Marina El Cid or Ventus El Cid. Iberostar Beach just doesn't offer as much as Iberostar Maya. IPB limits restaurant reservations and the pool is nice but a bit boring for teens. Iberostar Maya has the water park and lazy river. Hotel Marina El Cid has a large main pool with a jumping rock and water slide and unlimited a la carte dining reservations. You also have easy access to Ventus and Ventus Ha'. I have been working on my Hotel Marina El Cid review today and I hope to have the walk through video up Friday and the full review up Sunday or vice versa. Lol That might give you a better sense of the resort.

    Well presented. I often use the Cancun Airport as entry & exit point to and from Mexico ( 4 times last year, 2 times so far this year) because I always can find low fares from US and all the low fare domestic airlines have service through Cancun. Travel between terminals is sometimes expensive if you don't have the layover time to use the public transportation buses. In those 6 trips last year I never spent over $310 dollar's for Atlanta to Tuxtla in airline round trip fares but only from packing very light. Very very light. I'd like to mention if you don't leave the airport property you aren't required to pay VISITAX but if you go off property for any amount of time it's payment is required. Pleasant Travels.

That's "technically and officially" the response I got about layovers from the Quintana Roo Mexico Tributaria Government website when I clicked on " for any clarification ". I just printed out the email and added it to my travel documents.

Book round trip transfers. They will pick you up just outside the doors of the terminal. Drop you at your resort. And let you know when they will pick you up for your return flight. They are very safe and reliable. You can also pay with CC in advance or pay them cash when you arrive. USA Transfers also does private tours if there is anything special you would like to see or do off of the resort. I find them much better than excursions booked through the resorts. I hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. 😊 Have a great trip!!

      Honestly, if you can swing it Lindo or Maya are a step up and not much increase in price. If not, then I would choose Beach myself. We are just wrapping up a trip to the El Cid properties in Riviera Maya - Marina El Cid, Ventus El Cid and Ventus Ha El Cid. They are about 10-15 minutes north of the Iberostars. They are another good choice for a destination wedding. I'll try to have videos up about those three as fast as I can but they are a good comparable resort. 😊

      Honestly, EOB is pretty chill and 'couply'. Check out Excellence Playa Mujeres just north of Cancun airport (40 min drive). It is the quality of excellence but EPM draws a more lively crowd. Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya is a nice blend of party with good restaurants. Great activities staff! Avoid the base rooms at VIRM but Golden room categories are fantastic. Drinks at the pool are not as good as Excellence but easily overcome if you keep it simple. Excellence El Carmen in Punta Cana, DR is also a good one have a look at. Hope that helps gets you started. 🙂. Have fun planning such an awesome celebration 🎉

    • @newtravelescapes
      @newtravelescapes Před 23 dny

      Honestly, with some mobility concerns I don't recommend the Ayung. It is gorgeous but it is built into a valley on the hillside. The pathways are steep. There are a lot of stairs. Even stairs to get up to the restaurant or down to the pool. They do have golf carts you can call to take you where you want to go but you can't avoid stairs here. IF you want to stay here with knee problems I suggest a ground floor room at the very least. I don't believe they have any elevators anywhere so you would still be doing some stairs every day. Hope that helps a bit. 😊

    Would you stay at zilara Cancun or riviera Maya? And why

    • @newtravelescapes
      @newtravelescapes Před 23 dny

      Totally depends on what you are looking for. Zilara Cancun and Ziva Cancun are adjoining properties so there are technically more kids around but not in an annoying way. Zilara Riviera Maya is a stand alone resort and beside it (north side) is another adults only property so we saw very few kids the week we were there. Zilara Riviera Maya is a bit less expensive so it may fit better into your budget. To me the management is better at Zilara Cancun but that can change at any time so it is not a real factor. Beach quality fluctuates depending on the time of year but generally Cancun gets a little bit less seaweed but again, that is really hit or miss so don't count on it. Hope that helps a bit. 😊

      Hi! I am referring to the shows in the theater in the Plaza area. There is still included entertainment options for the different resorts but there are also upgraded options that you can pay for. We didn't pay for the theater option after speaking to some guests who didn't feel it was worth the expense. Imo it would be nice if they included one show in the theater for guests staying a week or more but at this time, they don't.

  • @heathermckinnon1865

    The thing about the Visitax is people are still not paying it and nothing is happening to them. It's a state tax, not federal, so it couldn't be tied to your passport.

    • @newtravelescapes
      @newtravelescapes Před 27 dny

      I agree with you. People aren't paying it and at the moment nothing is happening if you don't. Currently, the State has not waived its right to collect taxes due from the date the law changed (December 23rd 2022). This still leaves many of us guessing as to whether we could be presented with a bill for all unpaid taxes right back to this date. This has been alluded to by the State so they must be tracking whether or not you have paid through your passport scans. Tim Scurry from Travelkore told Open Jaw that he’s heard of travellers who’ve asked if they need to make up missed payments have been told that is the case. I trust Mr. Scurry's take on this so for us, we will pay it and count it as far as our vacation costs. If there is a chance that we will be refused entry without paying back taxes I'm not risking it. Is it still the stupidest tax implementation I have seen in a decade? It sure is. 😜

    As someone who adores Mexico and goes to Mexico 3 times a year for the last 2 decades, I want to say that you did an amazing job with this video! 👏 everything you said is accurate. Always, always ignore the timeshare and all those people near the exist! - I believe Uber and DiDi should be operating now in Cancun, after many years of battling with Taxi companies, if not, I suggest people to research the ADO bus! Hey, I love your video. This is my first time travelling alone. How do I set up push notifications? Is it an app? Or something else?

    • @newtravelescapes
      @newtravelescapes Před 23 dny

      Thank you! 😊 You install your airline's App. Make sure you input your reservation number and other info. Enable push notifications for that App and they should send you any pertinent changes you need to know about (i.e: gate changes, delays, boarding etc). The staff is usually pretty helpful at YYZ so you can ask an airline representative if there is anything you want to double check. They are also decent at keeping the reader boards updated when changes occur. I suggest getting checked in with your airline first, drop your bag, go through security, and find your gate. Then when you know where your gate is (basically get the "lay of the land") then grab a coffee somewhere and relax until boarding.

    I just booked the resort and was surprised to hear the day pass. I posted a question at the resort fan page on FB and called the resort regarding the day pass and was told the fee will only be applicable if you plan to still use the room after the check out time, i guess similar to late check-out fee. If you were to wait in the lobby for example until your air transfer pick up time after 3pm, you will be fine.

    • @newtravelescapes
      @newtravelescapes Před měsícem

      We thought that too but that wasn't the case for us and several others while we were there. The resort manager explained to us that If we wanted to partake of the all inclusive parts of the resort - so ALL food or drinks - after 3pm we needed to buy a day pass for each person. Yes, I suppose you can sit in the lobby until your transfer arrives and not eat or drink anything but our transfers did not pick us up until after 6 pm. I didn't really want to sit in the lobby from 3pm on waiting for a shuttle. We thought we could have a late lunch at 3pm and wait in a restaurant but they said 'no' to that too. Nothing to eat or drink past 3 without paying. We were also told we could not use the resort spa showers without booking a treatment of some kind. I was not impressed to say the least. I hope it works out better for you. ☺️ Enjoy your trip! The cocktails are fantastic 👍😃
